Iowa College Girl, First Negro Beauty Winner, Tired After Week-End Triumphs Iowa City, la: (U.R) The University of Iowa's Negro beauty queen, 17-year-old Dora Lee Mart, caught up with her studies today after a week end of schoolgirl triumphs. o The pretty Houston, Tex., girl admjtled "I've neglected my studies something terrible" while reijning as sweetheart of the University of Iowa campus. She was also "pretty tired." q Winner Over 28 Dora was chosen over 28 other pretty Iowa coeds Friday in vot ing by 2,000 of the university's 5,500 male population. She was 4he first Negro girl ever crowned queen in .the four-year old con test. As a reward, she ruled over the "Queen of Queens" winter formal dance, one of the school's top social affairs, Saturday night. The light-skinned freshman arrived on the arm of Collins Hagler, a sophotnore Negro half back on the Iowa football team, and said afterwards, "It was wonderful." A new thrill was awaiting her when Hagler brought her back to Currier Hall, the women's dormitory where she lives. Foil Makes Throne The girls lined up along the hall-way leading to her room and called out their congratula tions. While she was gone, the coeds had decorated the queen's room, wrapping aluminum foil on a chair to make it seem like a throne. Dora was one of seven candi dates entered by Currier Hall, which includes about 50 Negro girls among its 900 residents. She said she had not expected to win the title and gave much of the credit for her triumph to her campaign manager, Loretta Hightower of Clinton, la. Loretta and six other girls from the dormitory performed a skit at men's housing units be fore introducing their candidate. Dora, billed as the "Yellow Rose of Texas," would then hand out yellow roses to the college Ms We Live Hypercriiical Daughter Should Be More Tolerant Bright people are often very critical of others who are not as bright as tkey. This can led to trouble. (Q) "My daughter, who is 19 years old, was always at the top of her class at school. She won a scholarship to college and is now in her second year there. The trouble is she knows how bright she is and this makes her very criti cal of other Dr. Herlwk people. My husband and I never had the chances she is having and I feel she looks down on us and is ashamed because we don't know as much as she does. What wor ries me most in that she is that way with every boy she meets. "She is attractive and boys have always asked her for dates. But, after one or two dates they don't ask her again. When I ask her about the boys sh goes out wilh, she usually says they are so dull or stupid she doesn't en joy being with them. She has very few girl friends and I feel the trouble is hers because of the way she looks down on them. I would like to help her, as I don't see how anyone can be happy without friends, but I don't know what I can do." Mrs. R. T. The fault may be partially yours because you are proud of her and have made sacrifices to give her advantages you and your husband never had. By doing this, you may have put too much stress on intellectual achieve ment, making her critical of others who are not as bright as she. Try to point out to her that all her academic successes will mean little in life if she cannot get along with people. How can she hope to get and hold a job, for example, if she is critical of the people with whom she will be working? By stressing the im portance of other qualities, you may help her Jo be more toler ant which will make he more popular. Central Point, q Bomb Scare Chases Patrons of Theaters Hollywood '(U.R) More than 2500 persons were rushed from two movie houses in the heart of Hollywood last night follow ing reports that a bomb was "set to go off in 45 minutes." Dozens of officers searched the theaters before reporting the bomb scare was a hoax. The patrons were ordered from their seats following a telephone call to police by an unidentified man who whispered, "my wife and a man have placed a bomb in the Hollywood Paramount set to go off in 45 minutes." The officers traced the call to the rest room of Grauman's theater across the street and de cided to evacuate both theaters. The mysterious caller was not found.
