L. (Doc) Simpson, executive secretary of Southern Oregon Conservation and Tree Farm as sociation, Medford. Simpson described the seven point plan to foresters here for the 46th Western Forestry con ference. The plan was formu lated in 1952 by a committee representing principal timber op erators in southern Oregon. Some 50 members have joined the organization. Key to Plan Key to the plan is an agree ment by which each cooperator will pay his own crew for 12 hours fighting time in the first 48 hours of fire, Simpson said. The plan saves money for small operators. Each crew is under the supervision of the operator or his foreman. Playing an effective role in the program is the association's cooperative two-way radio sys tem organized in 1950. The sys tem now has 35 member com panies and over 85 mobile units, Simpson pointed out. To be successful, Simpson said, any cooperative plan must be backed with cooperation be tween industry and state and federal agencies, have fire crews trained in advance, have a writ-ten-out fire plan listing key per sonnel, have equipment for fire suppression, employ a coordin ated communications system, work on small areas, have a trained dispatcher, and have loyal workers. E. E. Silva, engineer in charge of the Forest Service equipment development center at Arcadia, Calif., told representatives that "aircraft is on the threshold of becoming an aerial weapon in forest fire suppression." Promising Results He noted that recent tests show promising results in prac tical application of bulk water, and retardant drops and in new concepts in transportation of supplies and suppression equip ment. The equipment center handles fire control activities, range management, engineering and timber management. Silva also predicted that a more comprehensive basis for estimating fire behavior may be developed. He also predicted a better understanding of cloud formations as related to light ning, wet or dry storms and wind action under clouds. W. R. Schofield. secretary- treasurer of the California For est Protective association, San Francisco, Calif., said close co operation between state govern ment and forest industries indi cates that the western states have adequate forestry laws. He cited California's Forest Prac tices act, which has been modi fied to meet-changing conditions. Conservation Programs Schofield said examples of co operation between government- industry include Keep Green, tree farm and other forest con servation programs. Oregon State Forester Dwight L. Phipps told conference dele gates that industry support has been responsible for much of the progressive forestry legislation in Oregon and other western states. Phipps said a good state for estry department must have a sound foundation, which in cludes a governing body, finan cial backing and a forest code. The forest code, Phipps said, includes protection of forests from fire, insect and disease con trol laws, forest practice meas ures to keep forest lands in a productive condition, forest taxa tion, at least on young growth and cut over lands, and a pro gram of forest research. The loganberry is named after J. H. Logan of Santa Cruz, Calif. It is a cross between a wild black berry and a red raspberry . . . Q What was the most over played song in one period? I claim it was, "The Merry Wid dow Waltz." A I believe it was "Dardanella" with "The Merry Widow Waltz" second and "The Music Goes Round and Round" third. . . Q My measurements are 37, 22, 37. How do your horses and women experts rate me? A Clip two inches off the hips and you rate grade A. That is if you are at least five feet five in height and weigh about 125 pounds. Prolific Papas The ability of the father to produce children is the major factor in the size of a family. That's what those who should know maintain. So, if you are the father of four or more chil dren take a bow. The most pro lific papa is Abdon Jaramillo of Amalfi, Colombia, South Amer ica. Senor Jaramillo is the father cf 43 children. Thirty by his first wife, 13 by his second. Those Experts Again note it claimed by an alleged expert on the subject that bald-headed men are pos sessed of much greater vim, vig or and virility than those having a thick head of hair. Another expert repeats the claim that long legged men make poor lovers. I have plenty of hair and am long legged so both these claims depress me. I may give up reading what these experts say. They are giving me an in feriority complex. Horses and Women A beauty contest exclusively for red-haired women. That is what was held in England. Must have been an extremely inter esting event. Wish I had been there. Following the competition the judges discussed the ques tion as to what color suit, eve ning gown or hat is best suited for a redhead. They decided the flaming tressed beauties look best in green. I can't go along with that view. For example, I think a red-haired woman wear ing a green evening gown would be too conspicuous. She would look better, that is her appear ance would have more of that thing called class, if she wore a white or black evening gown. Thursday, December 8, 1953 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE FIVE Forest Fire Fund Continuation Asked Portland U.P.) A Weyer haeuser official today urged con tinuation of Clarke-McNary fed eral appropriations for fire pro tection. He said the funds should not be considered subsidies. Bernard L. Orell, of Weyer haeuser Sales Co., St. Paul, Minn., told the annual conven tion of the Western Forestry and the federal contribution should be held to 25 per cent and that the state and private agencies contribute 75 per cent. Orell said that since fires do not respect state boundaries and were of an emergency nature, federal participation was an hon est recognition and not a subsidy.
