M UNITED Leave at 7 a.m., 11:00 a.m. or 5:35 p.m. Convenient connections to"All the East". 1 Air flowing over long, high mountain ranges plunges down ward over the leeward side, then upward and downward again in a series of waves that often reach well into the stratosphere. 2 These violent up-and-down drafts are accompanied by larg er scale horizontal waves which flow across the country like a river. 3 Where the air flowing across the mountain descends, it is compressed and heated but on rising again it cools and expands. If the air . cools sufficiently for water vapor to condense, clouds form. This indicates that mountain ranges are not merely, local weather factors but have appli cation to the entire range of weather research, according to project scientists.
