Canton Retailers Go
For 'Capitalist'Plan
Tokyo (U.R) Peiping Radio
said today half of the private
retail t.Qders in Canton have
switched their businesses into
"state capitalist" enterprises.
More than 71 per cent of the
city's retail trade is now being
handled by state capitalist shops,
the broadcast added. It said state
trading companies have almost
replaced private wholesale deal
ers, who now account for only
4.5 per cent of the total.
Mountain Ranges Said To Affect Weather
Los Angeles' (U.R) Sharp,
high mountain ranges such as
California's High Sierras are be
lieved to affect the whole na

The U. S. Air Force and the
Office of Naval Research have
financed a study of what effect
mountains have on the weather
To carry out the study "flying

1 Air flowing over long, high
mountain ranges plunges down
ward over the leeward side, then
upward and downward again in
a series of waves that often reach
well into the stratosphere.
2 These violent up-and-down
drafts are accompanied by larg
er scale horizontal waves which
flow across the country like a
river.
3 Where the air flowing
across the mountain descends, it
is compressed and heated but on
rising again it cools and expands.
If the air . cools sufficiently for
water vapor to condense, clouds
form.
This indicates that mountain
ranges are not merely, local
weather factors but have appli
cation to the entire range of
weather research, according to
project scientists.
Morse Sees Pooling
Of Power Important
Portland (U.R) Sen. Wayne
Morse (D-Ore.) testified before
a special water ana power re
sources subcommittee yesterday

federal power monopoly as he
was to a private power monop

he believed "multi-purpose dams
should be built by the govern
ment and the low head dams by
private utilities." He said the
key to economic progress in this
area was the pooling' of the
power from public and private
agencies.
Salem (U.R) The legisla
