National Education Campaign Planned To Speed Salk Washington (U.R) The Na tional Foundation for Infantile Paralysis shortly will launch a "nation-wide educational cam paign among parents and doc tors to spur the lagging Salk in oculation program. Foundation officials said an esiiroited 40 per cent of the vac cine Vow being released is not being used immediately because of public apathy, fear, or other factors. Basil O'Connor, founda tion president, said urgent meas ures are needed to deal with the situation. Between Christmas and New Year's the foundation plans to start sending out several hun dred thousand information book lets to physicians, health offi cers, and other authorities. The aim" is to remove the doubts some doctors still have about the vaccine's safety and effective ness. Circulari To Parents About 10 days later, the foun dation will begin distributing 35,000 00 circulars to parents of children in areas where vac cine is or willCbe available. Par ents will be told the vaccine is safe ai will be urged to get their children inoculated as quickly as possible. GRANGE CO-Of Central Point Ashland Program where necessary to call on its more than 3,100 chapters and 2,000,000 year -around volun teers to help remove local bottle necks in vaccine distribution. O'Connor said he would like to see 28,000,000 youngsters in jected between now and next June when the 1956 polio season will be in full swing. "This is a tremendous job," he said in a telephone interview with United Press. "Even with an all-out educational program, I'm afraid we may not achieve our goal if Injections are left largely to the individual initia tive of parents as at present. Mass Inoculation Program "The foundation is not in the distribution system and will not interfere with the present vol untary system. But I have been urging every authority I can find to press for a mass inoculation program through the schools, for example. It's only in this way that you can give the number of shots we should give before next June." Millions of children still haven't received any Salk vac cine. One reason is lagging pro duction. But another big factor has been a sharp slump in de-' mand because of: j 1. The shift to the voluntary I distribution system; 2. Some con tinuing professional doubt about the vaccine's safety; and 3. The ' fact that the 1955 polio season has ended. As We Live By ELIZABETH HU9LOCK, PH.D. Kindness Is Needed For Sensitive People People who are sensitive must be handled with kid gloves. (Q) "I have a neighbor who seems ill at ease and self-conscious when she is with other neighbors: W e are a friendly group but she doesn't seem to fit. In fact, she seems to think . we look down on her and she is likely to mis interpret any thing we say as Dr. Herlock reflecting u n - favorably on her, "Her husband is a drunkard and often comes home so drunk he starts a fight with her or the children. He shouts so everyone can hear him. I know this em-, barrasses her. She seems even worse after one of these epi sodes. "I feel sorry for her and would like to help but I don't know what to do without offending her." Mrs. H. J. (A) This woman needs kind ness and understanding. She knows how people feel about heavy drinking and how they look down upon a man who comes home so drunk he shouts or picks fights with the family. Naturally she is embarrassed to go among her neighbors for fear of what they will think or say. You don't have to tell her how sorry you are, but you can go out of your way to be nice to her. Treat her as a real friend, not . just a casual acquaintance who happens to live in the same neighborhood. Invite her to your home for a cup of coffe and a chat; then drop in to chat with her. Draw Her Into Group Another thing you can do is to draw her into the group of neigh bors and try to make her feel she "belongs." The other wom en may not feel as you do. They may interpret her sensitivity as meaning she is snobbish. You can help them to see her as you do by commenting on how embar rassed she is by the way her hus band behaves and that her sen sitivity come from feeling ashamed of her husband's be havior. This should help the other women to understand and want to be her friends. (Copyright 1955, General Features Corp.) 4-H Club Canyon Cooking Club We have started 4-H meetings.
