Unworried Dutchmen Live Longer Than Anyone Else By ROBERT MUSEL By Special Permission of Ihe United Press Association Americans worry more about how to live than any people on earth. The Dutch don't worry about it but live longer than any other people on earth. The man at thhe health de partment in Amsterdam agreed the Dutch were long-lived, but said he had never stopped to fig ure out why. "Do they take vitamins?" he was asked. "Only if the doctor tells them to." "Do they live on vegetarian diets?" "Not really, but they like veg etables, especially potatoes.", "They eat starch! Haven't they heard of high protein diets?" "Why don't you ask The Hague (the seat of government)" he suggested. "I've never given living long any thought." The Hague said it didn't have any statistics at hand, but it did know the Dutch have the lowest death rate in the world. "That's one reason our popu lation increases so rapidly," it said. "Jt's not that so many chil dren are born. Nobody dies." Can it be the climate?" "Don't be silly." Holland's climate is worse than Britain's , which means when it isn't raining it's cold and chilly, and even in the summer there's apt to be a biting wind. "You don't get much sun bathing, do you?" "Of course they are light drinkers?" "No, I think we are pretty heavy drinkers." "Do they know 40 is the dan gerous age and they must give up sports and hard work and late nights and spend a lot of time taking care of themselves?" "No nobody's told us yet." The diet information was checked with Jan, the waiter at the Port of Cleves restaurant. He said the best thing to do was to try a typical Dutch lunch. So after the hors d'ouvres I passed up the gin and beer he brought out a huge amount of fried po tatoes, under which I discovered a steak. With this mammoth por tion went a card to testify that I was eating the 4,410,449th beefsteak served at the restau rant since 1870. The inquiry resumed after a short nap. "It's not what we do, it's what we haven't got that makes " us live long," said a Dutch journal ist. "I meas the cars and refrig erators and fur coats we don't have and don't worry about, and the neighbors we don't try to keep up with." IT'S ABOUT TIME! Grandma a Model At 75, To Work To Glamorous 80 By JOANNE GOVERN United Press Correspondent Milwaukee, Wis. (U.R) Many fashion models figure their years in the profession are num bered. But a Milwaukee grand mother proves that modeling can be a career at 75 and be yond. Mrs. Fred Welke, who believes she is the oldest fashion model in' the nation, recently celebrat ed her 75th birthday with the comment she wanted to go on working until she is 80. The wife of a retired marine engineer, Ella Welke does dou ble duty every day, displaying top fashions at a Milwaukee de partment store and doing her own cooking, cleaning, washing and ironing. Never Grow Old "There are no idle moments," she said. "But I don't want them anyway." She said she kept young and active because: "I've never stopped wonder ing the minute you do, you are old. I never expect to be old, be cause I still am thrilled by the wonderful things that go on about me." Mrs. Welke, a tall woman with a good figure, shows fash ions "for the no longer young woman or the younger woman who has a full figure." She began modeling nine years ago, after the marriage of her only child, a daughter. The daughter, Mrs. Frank Rosa, lives in Santa Monica, Calif., and has one child, Jean. "I wanted something to do," said Mrs. Welke. "I love people and I'm not lazy." No Beauty Parlor In addition to store assign ments, Mrs. Welke does commer cials for television and frequent ly speaks to women's club groups. "I don't fuss with my face," said the 75-year-old model. "I've never been to a beauty parlor in my life." She says her beauty care is simple soap and water for her face, a little rouge, powder, and lipstick, and sometimes a touch of mascara. She cuts, washes and sets her own hair. "I have no illusions about my work," she said. "I am just an other woman, and like all wom en, I like clothes. But they must be the correct clothes for the occasion. "I don't attempt sophistication because it has no place in older women's lives." Her advice to other older women: "Don't wear clothes too young for you. You don't fool anyone." Mother of Five By Day; Comedy Artist at Night By GENE DETRO ' United Press Correspondent San Francisco (U.R) Phyllis Diller, 38, is one gal who could give even Robert Louis Steven son's Dr. Jekyll lessons on how to live a double life. By day, the willowy blonde is the stay-at-home spouse of an Alameda, Calif., insurance sales man and the hard-working moth er of five children. But at night, it's an entirely different story. Each evening about nine. Phyllis trades her apron for a slinky gown and the rubber face of a night club comedienne to become the feature attraction at an intimate basement bistro here known as The Purple Onion. Since Age of Three "Sometimes . I realize what I'm doing cooking all day and clowning all night is impos sible," she says. "But all the world's energy is yours, and it'll work for you if you only meet it half-way." Mrs. Diller sings, mimics and composes much of her own material. Phyllis would like to keep go ing "right on up" in the enter tainment world, but she never intends to lose sight of the fact she's wife and mother. "I don't believe in baby-sitters. But then, who needs them when your children are as level headed as mine," she said.
