Poor Policy To Leav Child Alone In House "Better safe than sorry should be the rule guiding every mother who has young children (Q) "I wish I could have an swered the letter of the mother who thought her husband was u n reasonable because he ob jected to leav ing little chil dren locked in the house while she went to the super market. '. agree with ev erything you Dr. Hexlocfc aid, onlv would have said more strongly, "Surely this mother can't be o stupid as to think she should leave her children alone for an hour. She must be looking for publicity. How could she ever face her husband if he came home to a pile of ashes? "When the children grow up, they will hate their mother for the lonely hours they spent, locked up in a house, wondering ii ineir mother would come back to them. I wish you would write another column and tell such mothers that they should think of their children as well as of themselves." R.P. (A) You are perfectly right when you say mothers should think of their children as well as of themselves. I should like to add to your statement the thought that, if mothers could imagine themselves in the place of their children and imagine how they would feel if they were the children, mothers wouldn't do many of the things they do Aside from the safety element there is the loneliness and in security a cnua experiences when left alone in a house. Even older children dread coming home to an empty house. They would rather be on the streets than alone in a house. For a young child, the situa tion is far worse, especially if he is locked in the house. Fur thermore, because his ability to understand is still limited, he never knows, when the mother leaves, when she will be back. Wondering about when she will return often sends a young child into a state of panic. (COPYRIGHT 1955, GENERAL FEATURES CORP.)
