Notre Dame Favored Over Southern Cal; Texas Upsets Aggies By JOHN GRIFFIN United Press Sports Writer Navv. Notre Dame, Texa Christian, and Mississippi will be the favorites in the biggest games Saturday when the 1955 college football season comes to an end in a blaze of traditional glory and conference champion ships. Navv and Army both were slated to move to Philadelphia today to net set for their 56th annual service gridiron classic there Saturday, and the last word was that the Middies re main favored by seven points. In another game, Notre Dame, ihc nation's hiahest-ranked in dependent team will be the rhnire bv 10 Doinls to gain its ninth win in 10 starts at the ex pense of Southern California. Texas Christian, the host team for the Cotton Bowl game, is 14-point favorite over Southern Methodist. TCU now can clinch the Southwest Conference cham pionship by winning this , one, . thanks to the stunning 21-6 up set handed Texas A & M by Tex as Thursday. The Aggies went into that tussle a 13-point pick, needing only a victory to gain their first league crown since 1940. And they scored first when Jim Wright bucked over from the . one in the second quarter. Texas Pulls Ahead But the Aggies missed the ex tra point. Aroused Texas scored 10 seconds before half time on Joe Clements' 25-yard, pass went ahead on Johnny Elam's conversion, then clinched the game on fourth-period touch downs by Walt Fondren and Ed Hawkins. Mississippi, like Texas Chris tian, can clinch a league title the Southeastern by making good as a seven-point pick over Mississippi State Saturday. If Ola Miss stumbles, the title could go to Auburn, Georgia Tech, or Vanderbilt, all of them favored In separate games. Out of this group will come the host team for the Sugar Bowl and possibly Texas Christian's Cotton Bowl rival. Oklahoma, the nation's No. 1 team, hopes to finish a perfect season Saturday and is the day's most lopsided choice at 35 points over Oklahoma A & M. Little Miami of Ohio, which has "been mentioned as a Gator Bowl possibility, kept those hopes shining brightly Thursday . by winding up a perfect season I with a 14-0 triumph over Cincin nati. The holiday also was a happy n for Wichita, which finished In a tie for the Missouri Valley Conference championship by crushing Tulsa, 54-0. But it was unhappy for Wyo ming, beaten 6-3 by Denver in possibly the wildest finish of any football game this year and thus prevented from tying Colorado m & M for the Skyline Confer ence title. Denver Bounces Back The score was 0-0 with only 10 seconds left when Joe Mas- trogiovanni, the "Cowboy from Brooklyn,, booted a 17-yard field goal to put underdog Wyoming ahead. That looked like the game. But there was still the tiny matter of one kickoff which Denver ran back for a touchdown on a 78-yard play that saw Max Willsey lateral to Dick uupton. Gupton was tackled on the goal line and the signal of a score was held up for 10 min utes because both squads were fighting on the field. Then the crowd was there, too, so they sKipped the extra point. Wyoming Athletic Director Glenn Jacoby said he will pro test the game to the conference commissioner on the grounds the referees "didn't see" the play. Colgate Defeats Brown To Complete Ivy Sweep Providence, R. I. (U.R) Col gate completed its humiliation of Ivy League opponents yester day, ambushing Brown with a series of crafty trap plays, 25-0, in the 37th renewal of their tra ditional Thanksgiving Day ri valry. It was Colgate's fifth victory without a loss over Ivy League opponents this season, and the first shutout Brown has suffered in 24 games. South Bend, Ind. (U.R) The 1955 Notre Dame football team will be honored at the univer sity's 36th annual testimonial banquet in the school's dining hall on Dec. 8. Worsley turned in his second straight shutout and Hergeshei mer rang up a three-goal "hat trick" Thursday night as the Rangers ' trounced the Boston Bruins, 5-0, in Boston. The victory, coming only 2 hours after the New Yorkers had belted, the Bruins by a 4-0 count on New York ice, hoisted the Rangers much closer to the Montreal Canadiens, who suf fered a 3-2 setback in Detroit.
