o TWSLYE MZDFORD (OREOOX) MAIL TRIBUNE Thursday, Koyember 24, 1955 Chicago Police Sort Meager Clues In Woman's Death Chicago 'U.R) Police sorted through a maze of skimpy clues today for a lead in the seem ingly motieless murder of a middleaged mother of six children. Mrs. Edith Jamieson, 48, was found strangled and trussed up "like a steer" yesterday in a dirty South Side alleyway just a short distance from her home. Preliminary investigation vir tually eliminated sex or robbery as motives for the crime. Police said the woman, the grandmother of five, had not been sexually molested and that her money purse was in a coat pocket. Unusual Rope An unusual type of wire and Ijemp rope used to bind the body appeared to be the best clues uncovered so far. The copper-coated, coil type wire was used to tie the victim's hands and wrists. Heavy hemp rope was wound around her neck and around her waist, with wire extending downward binding her ankles. A strip of cloth was knotted so tightly around the throat that it was deeply im bedded in the flesh. There was speculation that someone with a knowledge of steer-tying committed the crime, because of the method of Sinding the victim. Chicago's sprawling stockyards are located several miles away. Dr. Jerry Kearns, coroner's pathologist, said Mrs. Jamieson had bee nstrangled before she , was tied up. She also had been struck twice on the right side of the head, he said. Mrs. Jamieson's family gath ered in anguished silence in the kitchen of her home . . . gazing at the turkey she had prepared for Thanksgiving. "Mother was so happy yester day, fixing the turkey stuffing," said 19-year-old Thomas Jamie son, his voice trailing off into an anguished sob. Private Utility Permit To Build Dams in Hells Canyon Outraqeous, Harriman Tells Lewiston News Conference Lewiston, Ida. U.R) Gov. Averell Harriman of New York believes it was "outrageous" of the Federal Power Commission to build dams in Hells Canyon. Harriman told a press confer ence yesterday that the FPC gave permission to IdahoPower company to go ahead with the dams two days after Congress adjourned. "They did this out of fear Con gress would reverse their posi tion," he said. Dead line for Sunday Classified 1 at noon Saturday. Harriman also charged that Idaho's two Republican senators, Herman Welker and Henry Dworshak, with "selling Idaho short" in the controversy over public vs. private power. Harriman claimed he did not know whether the senators' sup- application to build Hells Canyon was in dams a giveaway port of Idaho Power company's j or payment - for service rend ered." The FPC granted Idaho Power a license last summer to build two of the three dams it plans in Hells Canyon. Public propon ents had favored a single, high, federally financed plan. Eden's eagerness for a talk with the President became known yesterday when London reports said he would welcome an opportunity to visit here. Authorities said the . United : States would be happy to receive the British leader for strategy talks. But they pointed out that Mr. Eisenhower will not be able to engage in extensive confer ences on world problems for some time because of his illness. Sor .e London reports said dis cussions on a possible trip al ready are underway. However, both the White House and State Department de nied knowledge of any present plans to work out a conference.
