3 I, 3 f Medford United fres Full Leased Wire Second Section Three More Arrested In Portland Thefts o r-ortiana u.K) .Portland po lice have arrested three more men in a roundup of suspects in a burglary ring which has stolen thousands of dollars worth of goods in an estimated 60 bur 0glaries in the last three months, The latest arrests brought to seven the number now in cus tody in connection with the bur glaries. Police identified the three as Charles B. Bliss, 24, Leland'E. Coffman, 31, Sandy, and Nich olas R. Gillander, 21. All were charged with burglary. Four others, including a 24- year-old woman, already were in jail. Detectives said they had re covered some of the loot which .ranges from television sets to Squor. Eugene Hunter Found Alive, Well Springfield ' (U.R) An elk hunter, reported missing over night in the rugged, snowbound Olallie trail area east of here, was found alive and well yester day. t Delbert Van Schoaich, nim e rod warden for the Eastern Lane county fire patrol, said he had received a radio report from state police officer Robert Steele that Pat La Chapelle, 55, of Eu gene, had been found. Steele's report said La Chap elle had shot an elk yesterday, but in coming out his car had slipped off the road. The hunter spent the night in a watchman's shack. (International) Dampening of Ambitions Said Toughest Part of Working With Amateurs on TV By WILLIAM EWALD United Press Correspondent New York (U.R) The tough est part about working with am ateurs on TV is putting a damper on their ambitions, according to Ted Mack. Mack, emcee of "The Original Amateur Hour" for eight years, pointed out that many sing-for- supper performers just don't have enough stuff ever to make the grade. "I probably spend more time discouraging amateurs than en couraging them," he said. "I've seen too many kids beating their brains out wanting to end up in the movies or the Metropolitan who just won't ever make it." Mack, who began life as Wil liam Maguiness in Greeley, Colo., joined the Amateur Hour staff back in 1935 when it was being chaperoned on radio by Major Edward Bowes. Up to that time, Mack had worked as a saxo phonist, orchestija leader. When Bowes died- in 1946, the crew was disbanded. "Then I woke up one day," re called Mack, "and TV had start ed. Dumont had three stations. Most of us thought that the only thing that made the whole show click was Bowes." Mack's first move in his role as emcee was to toss out the gong which was used to signal an untimely demise to an inept performance. "Undoubtedly, if we left the gong in, we might have kept the viewers who looked at the show from the sadistic viewpoint. But these kids on the show let every one know that they're going to be on television and I just can't bring myself to embarrass them." The most important thing about the ABC-TV Amateur Hour, Mack said, is that it gives ordinary citizens a chance to grab one big moment in the spotlight. . Of course, there have been some conspicuously successful graduates, too opera stars Rob ert Merrill, Miml Benzell and Regina Resnick, ventriloquist Paul Winchell, comedians Larry Storch and Jack Carter, the Ma riners and Actress Vera Ellen. "And there was also one fel low who worked in a quartet in one of our traveling units who L didn't think had the stuff at all," said Mack. "He wanted to solo, but we wouldn't let him. "He was a kid from Hoboken, N.J., named Frank Sinatra." MM 1 I 1 1 1 MM Trades ! with "Push a Mew One mm u m Subversive Board Will Investigate Cain Qualification Washington (U.R) T h e Sub versive Activities Control Board, acting on information supplied by the Justice Department, is preparing to air "bias and preju dice" charges against board mem ber and former Sen. Harry P. Cain (R.-Wash.) Cain has sharply criticized the administration's s e c u ri t y pro gram. An authoritative source said the board will suspend hearings in a case charging the Washing ton Pension Union with being a Communist front. Cain has been presiding over the hearings at Seattle since Oct. 8. Called io Washington The informant said the hear ings will be suspended for at least 10 days while the board formally investigates Cain's qual ifications. He said Cain has been called ' ck to Washington. The board inquiry will center on a statement which Cain made while a member of the Senate, denouncing the Pension Union as a "notorious Communist front." This statement was called to the board's attention by As sistant Attorney General William F. Tompkins. Tompkins is in charge of the Justice Department's security program, which Cain has public ly attacked recently as being unfair and un-American in some of its aspects. Tapeslry of Space Noted in Discovery Mount Hamilton, Calif. (U.R) Star-gazers have discovered another indication that the mil lions of bodies in the sky are woven together in a vast and ordered tapestry of light and space. A body of astronomers at the Lick Observatory here reported the first fruits of a 7 5-year , re search program begun in 1947. They have discovered that the great bunches of stars called "extra-galactic nebulae" are not scattered in a random fashion over the surface of the sky as many scientists have believed. Instead, there seems to be a gigantic system of order and or ganization throughout the uni verse, according to Dr. C. D. Shane, observatory director. The California scientists have found the huge nebulae are dis tributed in clusters and that there seems to be a strong ten dency for the clusters of extra galactic nebulae toward larger clusters of two or more. These findings, according to Shane suggest a greater order to the universe than has been shown before and may have a bearing on theories about its origin. Utah Governor Endorses Knowland Davenport, Iowa (U.R) Gov. J. Bracken Lee of Utah Wednesday night attacked the foreign and domestic policies of the Eisenhower administration and endorsed Sen. William Knowland (R-Calif.), for the Re publican nomination for presi dent. , He said in an interview the Ei senhower administration has fal len down on campaign promises to cut the budget and is carrying- out the same "giveaway" programs followed by the Tru man administration. He called the giveaway programs uncon stitutional. Lee also called for an end of subsidies to farmers. "It 'isn't right for us to subsi dize one segment of the econ omy and not others," he said. S. consular officials disclosed yesterday they were returning to the United States a 15-year-old American girl they said posed as a soldier's wife for a month. Officials did not give her name but said 'her home was in Wichita, Kan. They said she arrived here Oct. 7, on a pass port identifying her as the wife of Pvt. James R. Stonehouse, 27, of Stamp, Wash. Stonehouse, of the 10th Infan try Division, is in the guard house at Scheinfurt on charges of being absent without leave. The story of the girl came out at his courtmartial two weeks ago. Army authorities found the girl living in a hotel in Schein furt and said she had no money The Army turned her over to consular officials because she was not officially an Army de pendent. The Army wired the girl's mother in Wichita to send money for her passage but was told "Tell her to get the money from her husband." Army authorities said the girl and Stonehouse had been living together in Kansas before he was transferred from Fort Riley, Kan. Communist Spy Plot Uncovered in Lebanon Beirut, Lebanon (U.R) Le banon police have announced they had uncovered a Commun ist spy ring headed by a Polish official who bribed a newspap erman to steal secrets from the American, British and French embassies. Police identified the head of the ring as George Gutkovsky, Poland's consul general in Da mascus, Syria, and said he was active in both Lebanon and Sy ria where' girl friends of the newsmen gave him copies of em bassy correspondence. Police said they had obtain ed a confession from Lebanese newsman Pierre Raphael that he had acted for Gutkovsky in this country and often met him at the village of Kahheleh, barely sjx miles from Beirut. Court Denies Petition To Rewrite Ballot Title Salem (U.R) The Oregon Supreme Court yesterday denied a petition asking the court to rewrite Attorney Gen eral Robert Y.
