Plastic Autos in Rapid Production Venice, Calif. (U.R) New autos of every make come off assembly lines here daily, sur passing production of all the De troit manufacturers combined. And there is just as much se crecy surrounding these new models as in the Michigan plants. The autos. however, don"t com pare in size with Detroit prod ucts. These cars are miniatures, authentic scale models assem bled for plastic hobby kits. But the officials (of the Revell AMT Co.) have all the headaches which go along with design and manufacture of the real thing. "We have the same problems during the change-over season," a company spokesman said. "Our dealers go all out to move their 1955 cars to make room for the 1956 models in the same manner as do the dealers of full-size cars." At the plant, artists, designers and advertising men work around the clock so the cam paign to launch the miniature motorama will hit at the same time as the impact of the orig inals on the market. "It's no secret how the com panies guard their new designs," the spokesmen added. "But we have to guard the same secrets, only our job is 10 times as tough." In the local plant, authentic ally scaled replicas of not one, but several of these cars are worked on from original plans. Top security measures are in force in every section of opera tion. Even visitors are screened. This security is maintained un til the day the plastic scale model kits are released to dealers. William C. Marland of West Virginia, who hopes to attract industrial expansion to his state to help solve a labor surplus, spent several hours here yesterday. Gov. Marland said he was not urging plants to move from one Seeking More Industries state to West Virginia but was "thinking more in terms of ex pansion." He said "tremendous" mechanization of coal mines has "left many men out of work." Marland flew to Seattle and plans to visit 10 cities on his trip. SCIENCE AT WORK By DEUOS SMITH United press Science Editor New York (U.R) People are entitled to know precisely why they're dizzy and to have some thing done about whatever it is which makes them so. "Dizziness is a terrifying symptom," said Dr. Gordon D. Hoople in admonishing his fel low physicians not to be casual toward the dizzy 3nd to reas sure them with more than a breezy "Oh, youil be all right." "Dizziness is not a disease, and because it is not it never kills anyone," he said. But it is terrifying "And for a good rea son. After passing through the tumbling and falling episodes of very early life, everyone uncon sciously lives by the axiom that the earth is solid and stable, and his relation to it is fixed." When a man is dizzy "a funda mental law of life has been vio lated. When an axiom of every day living has been violated, the patient is scared his sense of security is threatened. . . -The dizzy patient deserves more than many others the sympa thetic attention of the physician who is dedicated to helping his fellow men. First Time Puzzling "The physician who is con sulted by a patient suffering from the first time with an at tack of dizziness is at a disad vantage compared to the doctor who is consulted by a patient who has had many attacks. This is because the repetitive charac ter of such attacks together with associated signs and symp toms often furnish clues for an accurate diagnosis and satisfac tory treatment. "The first attack may be the only one a certain patient may ever have, but it is well nigh an impossibility for a physician to predict that this will be so. More often attacks are multiple, and usually their occurrence is to tally unpredictable. As a matter of fact, their unpredictability is a significant factor in creating the horrible insecurity which so thoroughly possesses the dizzy patient." For there to be "true" dizzi ness, a sense of motion has to be present, he said either in the person or in his surround ings. "This need not be a sense of turning, although more often than not it is," he continued. "Feelings of tilting, falling, or veering to one side or the other in ' walking carry the implica tions of motion. Both turning and tilting, falling or veering are possible features of an at tack of dizziness because there are two parts' to the labyrinth" of the ear. One part is in the semi-circular canals which measure mo tion. The remaining part of the labyrinth is the static part. Some patients with true dizzi ness may call it "lightheaded ness when in reality their trou ble may have serious import ance. On the other hand, gid diness and lightheadedness are not really dizziness . . . The ability to distinguish between dizziness and lightheadedness is cne of the doctor's major re sponsibilities in the management of these patients." In true dizziness, three body systems can be involved the ear system, , the eye system, or the muscle-joint system. "Of the three," he continued, "the ear is the most important for it is the true organ of balance. A pa tient can get about if one of these three systems is destroyed, but when two of the three no longer function, he is an am bulatory (walking) cripple." . Mayor said three major Pac ific Coast ship lines have an nounced a $220,000,000 vessel replacement program since World War II. "These figures must be match ed by an active search for world commerce," he said. TIDES FROM QUAKES Boston (U.R) Tidal waves have nothing to do with tides, according to the Boston Museum of Science. They are caused by earthquakes on the bottom of the ocean.
