That was the declaration of Fred Spiegelberg, Medford high head football coach, yesterday at a luncheon of Medford Kiwanis club. Members of the Black Tornado gridiron squad, which encount ers Grants Pass high here Friday night in the District 6 A-l champ ionship conflict, were guests of the service group at Rogue Val-j ley Country club. The remarks by Spiegelberg pointed up the hard-stressed fact this week that the 1955 district and Southern Oregon Confer ence crown hinges entirely on the outcome of the Friday game. "Grants Pass is going to have blood in its eye," the head men tor said. But he added, "This club (the Tornado) has plenty of moxie, too." Describing the Black Tornado and its season up to now, the coach said, "These kids certainly have come through. They have come steadily along. They came to their own again against Eu reka." Physically Fit The Tornado should be phy sically intact for the big game of the year on the local grid iron, Spiegelberg indicated. He voiced this probability again this morning. Backs John Hawley, John Bellack and Eldon Francis and Tackle Mel Morgan have been on the ailing list. Spiegel berg said he expected all to be in action Friday night. However, Bellack was still limping from a le? ailment in drills last night Heartening in the outlook for Tornado defense against the hug. Grants Pass line has been the showing of Morgan in drills this week. The tackle has missed five games this season because of a broken hand. Right now he's pushing Larry Cranston for a starting . defensive assignment and Cranston is going good too. Medford line play is going to count much in the contest. Both clubs have breakaway backs. For the Tornado they're in the persons of Mike Hawkins, Gary Riley and John Bellack. Grants Pass's four backfield starters all have a quality of speed. They are Chuck Nevi, quarterback; Gary Hermann and Dave Flipse, halfback and Allan Drews, full back. George Curtis in the Grants Pass Daily Courier re marks, "All four can move and all four of them have demon strated that, on occasion, that they, can cut and dodge through the secondary defenses. Ends Have Task The Medford' coach told Ki wanians yesterday that Tornado ends, Mike Stearns, Dick Cop p'e, Maury Butts and Jerry Gat lin have jobs cut out for them in busting up the Cavemen's end sweeps. Spiegelberg said that Copple and Stearns likely will get start ing call at ends both ways. Pos sible tackles are Neil Plumley and Al Boardman with Cranston to be the defensive starter in place of Boardman.r Monte Hoist and Jack Gregory likely will get the guard call with Bob Apple a guard on defense, Gregory go ing to linebacker and Hoist back ing and playing in the line. Dick McLaughlin is probable quarterback and linebacker Hawkins and Riley or Bellack mav start at halfs with Larry Gober or Dave Bosworth at full back. Bellack, Riley and Bos worth may get first defensive call with Francis and Hawkins also to see duty. The Grants fass line is ex pected to be Eddie Guize. 187 md Larry McFarland, 165, ends: Joe Francis Has Bruised Shoulder Corvallis (U.R) Sophomore tailback Joe Francis is nursing a badly bruised shoulder and will probably miss Saturday's game between the Oregon State Beavers and Idaho, according to Beaver Coach Tommy Prothro. Ray Westfall ran in the tail back position during a long scrimmage yesterday, with Tom Berry at fullback and Dick Ma son in the injured Sam Wesley's spot at wingback. Vaughn Street Park Transaction Completed Portland (U.R) Completion of a transaction marking the end of Portland's venerable Vaughn street baseball park has been an nounced and the new owners said stands would be razed as soon as lights and equipment are removed. California Bag & Metal Co. is the new owner of the site after a deal involving about S250.000: About one-third of the five acre tract in the Northwest in dustrial area of the city will be resold immediately to Electric Steel Foundry Co. which formed the north boundary of the ball park for many years. Vaughn street was the home of the Portland Beavers of the Pacific Coast League until the end of the 1955 season. Next year the Beavers will move to Multnomah stadium, closer to the downtown area. Warm Southwest Storm Should improve Angling Portland (UP) The weekly report on fishing conditions pre pared by the State Game Com mission: SouttwMt: Some rise in the Rogue river is being caused by recent rains, and little suc cess has been enjoyed by steel head fishermen. The warm southwest storm is expected to bring the fish up from the lower Rogue canyon to Create better angling conditions for the coming week end. Salmon season is closed throughout the Umpqua drain age above highway 38 bridge at Scottsburg. Steelhead angling slow. All streams throughout the upper Umpqua area are moder ately high and muddy. Angling for salmon and jacks is gener-. ally good in Tenmile lake. NORTHWEST: Ndrth coast streams dropping and clearing, and lew fresh salmon are in. Tillamook, Nestucca, Salmon river angling fair with occa sional good catches of silvers and jacks. Best on dropping water level after freshet. Occasional steelhead are being taken in larger streams. In good weather Barview jetty is pro ducing perch and kelp bass. Both the Sandy and Clackamas rivers are fall ing and barring heavy rains should be in Rood shape by Friday.? Fishing is expected to be poor however. The 1200 seats in the old' Quail, Pheasant Hunting Should Hold Up for Hunters With Dogs Portland (U.R) The weekly hunting report as prepared by the State Game Commission: Southwest: Coos County elk "prospects are only fair for com ing week end, although substan tial kill made opening week end. Timber areas show best pros pects. Coos Bay waterfowl pros pects fair, poor in other areas. Fair waterfowl prospects tidal areas below the Rogue. Jackson county waterfowl population low, but quail and pheasant shooting will hold up well for hunters with dogs. Douglas county pheasant and elk hunting would improve with dry weather although some elk country roads will not be usable all winter. NORTHWEST: Ducks are scarce in the upper Willamette Valley, but re cent storms should bring in more Dirds by the weekend. Pheasants are wary and a good doe is needed to flush them- out. Elk hunting prospects Clatsop County still fairly good if weather is favorable. A fair number of legal bulls are ranging in or near heavier areas. CENTRAL: Quail hunting slow Crook and Deschutes counties, but the birds are there. Pheasant hunting very slow. Upper Deschutes River area has fair number of ducks, should provide Ivan Harrington Heads Linksmen In Handicap Play Ivan Harrington is leader among Rogue Valley Country club golfers who have finished their three 18 hole rounds in the, annual fall handicap but two divoters, at least, have a good chance to overtake him by Sunday evening's deadline for completion of play. Harrington has a , 215 net count for 54 holes of play. His net scores by round were 69, 76 and 70. Closest to him is Al Althens with 72-(l-75 218 and Ed Nichols with 73-75-71219. Among those with just two rounds played, Bob Johnson and Frank Allen are listed as having a chance to overtake Harring ton. Johnson has a 70-68 138 count so far and Allen a 70-69 139 total. Clayton Lewis had a 74-74-72 220 for his three rounds. The two schools meet here at 8 p.m. Saturday for the District 6 A-2 championship and the right to enter state title play-offs. While the Pirates were hard at their preparations bleachers were being brought from the Central Point field and more possibly were to be obtained at Eagle Point. Coach Jack Woodward said that he worked his line on de fensive fundamentals and held a good tough defensive scrim mage. He said he believed the work helped the line a lot. Brood at Flank The mentor reported that be cause of a shortage of ends, Half back Delmar Brood may play a flank on defense. That will al low Bill Madden to play at the safety spot with which he is fa miliar. Woodward commented on the defensive tackle work of Walt Hurlbut and the lineback ing of Jim Korth. He said that use of Dave Seizinger at tail back and Madden at quarter back, as well as end and safety, will give Phoenix needed reserve strength. Fullback Dan Lovett ran against the first string line last night and Woodward said he looked better than he has for a Main & Fir Sts. long time. In Coquille the Pirates will be up against a good solid club. Out standing man in the line is How ard Wagner, a 193 pounder. While the backfield is well-balanced the leader is Duane Sher wood, tailback in the wing T. He weighs 157 pounds and pos sesses lots of speed. Troy Flan km an Off of Squad Los Angeles U.R) Huge Chuck Griffith was off the Southern California squad 'to day because Coach Jess Hill said the 253-pound first-string right end broke training rules. Neither Hill nor Griffith, a senior who stands six feet seven inches, would discuss what rules the coach said were broken. In a terse statement yesterday Hill announced before practice: "Chuck Griffith has been dropped from the SC football squad for breaking training." Griffith said the action was "a blow to me." EAGLES GET RICCA Philadelphia (U.R) James Ricca, a guard who was released by the Detroit Lions last Mon day, has been signed by the Phil adelphia Eagles. Ricca, who stands six four and -weighs 270 pounds is in his fifth year in the National Football League. He played college ball at Georgetown university. Medford Alan AmecKe o Heads Pros In Rushing Philadelphia (U.R) With a backward glance at baseball and the annual "assaults" on Babe Ruth's home run record, it can be pointed out that Alan Ameche of the Baltimore Colts is running well ahead of the single season ground gaining mark Steve Van Buren set seven seasons back. "The horse" is snorting and pawing at a 635-yard clip for the first six games of the National Football League season, apace 169 yards ahead of the field in the rushing statistics and one which would have him surpass Van Buren's record 1,146 if maintained. Weavin' Steven set his mark for the Philadelphia Eagles back in 1949, and a couple of other good runners took a crack at it. The same season, Tony Canadeo had 1,052 for Green Bay, and Joe Perry of San Francisco had 1,049 last year. Perry is the only NFL player to top 1,000 yards two years running. First Pro Game Ameche, the rookie from Wis consin who gained 194 yards against the Chicago Bears in his first professional game and who rolled for 117 against Green Bay last Saturday, is well ahead of Van Buren's record pace. Big Steve had, only 451 in the first six games. " Perry, the' 1954 champion, bounced into the championship picture Sunday. Joe-the-Jet ram bled for 149 yards to take over second place with 448 yards.
