Detectives To Question Beauties In Slaying of Wi lliam Woodward New York UK Detectives prepared today to question sev eral society beauties whom Mrs. William W. Woodward Jr. sus pected were competitors for the love of her slain sportsman husband. Mrs. Ann Crowell Woodward, who killed the millionaire turf man last Sunday with a shotgun blast, was placed under a round-the-clock suicide guard at Doc tor Hospital while authorities moved to complete the case for grand jury action next weak. Private detectives hired by the 39-year-old former radio soap opera heroine to spy on her 35-year-old banking heir hus band gave the list of prominent society women to police who are gathering evidence on marital discord in the Woodward home. Sports Figure Named The list of names was re ported to include that of the wife of a prominent New York Godfrey Fires Housekeeper New York (U.RJ Arthur God frey fired his housekeeper, Mrs. Ingeborg Sorensen, after police questioned her about the marital life of her former employers, Mr. and Mrs. William C. Wood ward Jr., it was disclosed today. Mrs. Sorensen said the radio and TV star gave the firing as signment to a secretary who told her: "Mr. Godfrey has made other arrangements." The college-trained domestic said she was "stunned" when she got her walking papers yesterday. Chief of Detectives Stuyve sant Pinnell questioned Mrs. Sorensen Monday about marital difficulties between the Wood wards. Mis. Woodward killed her socially prominent turfsman husband with a shotgun blast Sunday, because she said she thought he was a prowler. The housekeeper gave Pinnell ?. frank account of tiffs and tem per in the Woodward househld. She said Mrs. Woodward created such an atmosphere of tension that she decided to look for an other job. An employment agency located Godfrey for her a week ago. sports figure. The private agents said they trailed Woodward for seven years without turning up anything deeper than friendship with the women named. Nassua County District Attor ney Frank Gulotta, who is in charge of the investigation, also confirmed reports that Wood ward hired detectives to keep tab on his wife"s private life. He said reports on her activities were "all negative." Gulotta already has ques tioned dozens of socialites, in cluding the Duchess of Windsor, who attended a party with the Woodwards shortly before the slaying. Still to be questioned is Brenda Frazier Kelly, a leading pre-war debutante. Did Not Attend Funeral Woodward was buried Wednes day after a celebrity-starred fu neral from which Mrs. Wood ward was barred by her physi cian, Dr. John M. Pruting. Gulotta said he does not in tend to subpoena Mrs. Wood ward for the grand jury inves tigation. He said he could not stop her from appearing before the grand jury voluntarily, add ing that she would have to sign a waiver of immunity "before I would let her testify." ristol Raps City Leaders, Reliance On Government Aid Grants Pass A tendency of miners to rely on government aid, and apathy on the' part of the city officials is doing severe damage to mining in southern Oregon, F. I. Bristol, president of the Oregon Mining Congress, declared at the weekly meeting of the Grants Pass Lions club Nov. 1. Bristol" will eo to Sacramento next week to represent Gov. Officials said the figure would be the final one for the fall term and represented an 18 per cent increase over all term enroll ment last year. Enrollment in all branches of the state system of higher education averaged a 15 per cent increase. Central Point Youth Held in Check Case Central Point A 14-year-old Central Point youth was ar rested by Central Point and Medford police Tuesday on charges of forging a check and passing it at Faber's market here. Central Point Police Chief Oran Chastain said the youth ad mitted forging the check for SI 9. 50 made payable to himself. The youth also admitted forging another check which he did not pass, and attempting to cash a check at another business estab lishment here. The youth fled when the clerk attempted to de termine if the boy had had a checking account. Aid To End In his talk as guest speaker at the Lions meeting, Bristol pointed out that uncertainty in the mining industry is due to the fact that many forms of govern ment aid will end in about 18 months. The federal government has been so involved in mining in recent years that the industry now looks to the government for reassurance before they will at tempt anything, "Bristol said. "Now, the situation is that no one tries to operate a nickle mine up at Riddle, a chrome mine in our Siskiyou county foothills, a tungsten mine out here on Foots creek, where there is a promising one, or a uranium mine at Lakeview, without get ting the government to say first, "We'll do this." May Double Operation Bristol stated that the Hanna nickle mining company at Rid dle is doing better than expect ed and may double the size of their operations. Possible substantial nickle de posits along the California-Oregon line could result in four or five mining operations such as the one at Riddle, Bristol said. "But 'here in Grants Pass, the city fathers are discouraging mining," he said. He pointed out that the government pays from three to five million dollars a year buying chrome through its chrome depot located southwest of Grants Pass on the California and Oregon Coast Railway. The city of Grants Pass pro poses to abandon the railway, Bristol said, which might mean that the chrome depot would be moved to California. The rail road would also be needed for the development of nickle mines in the Illinois Valley. Twice during his talk, Bristol spoke in strong terms about what he called the "don't care" atti tude of the Grants Pass city council. Thursday. November S. MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE ELEVEIC Dissolution of Rural Phone Firm Completed Dissolution documents of the Phoenix Rural Telephone com pany were filed this week, ac cording to the company's attor ney, O. H. Bengtson. The firm, a private corporation was organ ized in the early 1920s and oper ated on a subscription basis. Several months ago the equip ment of the company was pur chased by the Medford Bell Telephone company and some new equipment was installed. The lines have since been oh the Medford system. SAVE!
