Backstairs: Ike Windshield Stickers By MERRIMAN SMITH United Press White House Writer Denver U.R) Backstairs at the temporary White House: Manny Rss, the New York badge and button manufacturer, began producing shortly after President Eisenhower"s heart at tack a series of auto windshield stickers proclaiming: "Get well Ike, America needs your heart." After he mailed the stickers around the country, Manny be gan to wonder. Maybe his origi nal sticker indicated, as he put it, "political connotations." Whereupon he came up with a new batch of stickers which say "Get well Ike and please relax." m Winter scene at Lorwy Air Force Base: Just outside the White House offices is a large apple tree. Children of Air Force personnel on the way home from school stop off to shake the fruit from the tree. One of the President's friends who saw him in the last few days came away from Fitsimons Army Hospital with the idea that the chief executive might remain in Denver as late as Nov. 15. Sept. 24, asking if he could be of assistance. He did not reach Mrs. Eisen hower, but someone in her be half apparently relayed to him a suggestion of gratitude for any prayers offered in the Presi dent's behalf. Elson then relayed the sug gestion to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington. He also called "a leading rabbi." The article in Collier's shows some of the problems a president faces in following his faith in any semblance of dignity. Once at the National Presbyterian Church off Connecticut ave. irt Washington, one worshipper was so enthusiastic about the President's presence that he lifted his wife high in the air as the rest of the congregation was bowed in prayer.
