Genetics Facts Must Be Learned If Human Race Is To Have Future Tuesday, October 25. 19SS MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE IVE By DELOS SMITH United Press Science Editor New York (U.PJ Prof. H. J. Muller's full position on the fu ture of the human race is that it will have little if any future after a thousand years or so unless it learns the facts of gene tics and starts taking those facts very seriously. The learned, scholarly Muller, who received a Noble Prize in medicine a-d physiology in 1946, was the center of a furor re cently when he wasn't ' permit ted to deliver a paper on atomic bomb radiation damage to hu man germ cells at the Geneva conference on the peaceful uses of atomic energy. Position Expanded Atomic radiation damage to germ cells, however, was only a part of his position which he has now expanded in full detail and in only semi-technical lang uage. In brief, it is that at the rate the advances and refine ments of civilization are going, the race is doomed to extinction eventually with or without the hydrogen bomb. Muller chose a scientific for um the pages of the Scientific American for his exposition, which began with a primer of the fundamentals of - genetics. Sketchily given, for brevity, they are as follows: Genet Change Naturally The genes contained in the germ cells, which convey all in herited characteristics, change or "mutate" at a very low rate naturally. These changes or mu tations are almost all harmful, either immediately or potential ly. The individual bearing them may die prematurely or they may lessen his fertility or they may have their effect in his de scendants. But nature has estab lished an equilibrium, obvious ly the race has not only per sisted but has increased in num bers and the quality of its mem bers has steadily improved. But now man himself is inter fering with nature's slow rate of change or mutation of his own Mm JUST A FEW At This PRICE! 1955's AUTOMATIC LAUNDRY ECONOMY PAIR! Here Muller spoke very critically of the medical profession for its free use of x-rays which in heavy doses or in accumulations of light doses mutate "genes. Also x-rays are being employed more and more in industry. Furthermore, there's good sci entific reasons for believing that various chemicals, singly and in combination, can step up the mutation rate, too. Here, he pointed out with qualified sus picion to substances containing caffeine, such as coffee. Harmful Genet Increasing Third, are the remarkable ad vances of medicine and sanita tion. They disturb nature's equi librium, too, because individuals who in a more primitive society would have died young -of in herited constitutional weakness es, now live and reproduce, pass ing on those harmful genes. By mathematical progression, the reservoirs of harmful genes in the human race as a whole are increasing. Dr. Muller, who is professor of genetics at In diana University, was able to demonstrate mathematically that the end of the road a thousand years from now could be extinc tion. Even a war fought with atomic bombs would only shorten-the road. Technique Not Abandoned . He saw a way of avoiding this and the way "does not by any means abandon modern. so cial techniques or call for a re turn to the fabulous golden age of noble savages or even of rug ged individualism." In essence, that way is .ithe attainment of such gen et a 1 knowledge of genetical facts that those persons "who were rela tively heavily loaded with gene tic defects could consider it their obligation, even if those defects had been largely counteracted, to refrain from transmitting their genes, except when they also possessed genes of such un usual value that the gains for their descendants was likely to outweigh the loss." - Grange Eagle Point Grange Eagle Point Grange met in regular session Tuesday, Oct. 18, with Master Mabel Wentz pre siding. The meeting was pre ceded by the annual wild game dinner. Nat Edsall, instructor in the I vocational agricultural school 1 recently established in Eagle ! Point, was guest speaker. Reed McKay, master of Shady Cove Grange, and Ed Cowderi were honored guests. Cowden celebrated his 85th birthday on Monday. Mrs. Goldie Chamberlain "was in charge of the program and it consisted of readings, violin piano numbers by Ed Cowden and Goldie Chamberlain, and a talk by Edsall who outlined the work of the 49 boys in the agri culture class. A pin and silver certificate were presented to Mrs. Lottie Van Scoy in recognition of 25 years membership in Eagle Point Grange. . Bob ' Bitterling, agriculture , chairman, commented on the large crop of clover seed and subsequent low. price, and he also noted that many people yiew with alarm the fact that much valuable farm land is now being subdivided and sold for small home tracts, not only here but all over the country. 1 , Election of . officers will be held at the next meeting of the Eagle Point Grange on Nov. 1.
