0 Salvation Army Aids Unfortunate; Assisted by UMC (Editor's note: This is another in a series of brief articles dealing with the agencies which are benefitted from con tributions to the United Med ford Crusade. The material is furnished by the agencies themielrei.) The helping hand extended to the unfortunate by the Salvation Army is made possible through contributions to the United Med- ford Crusade. Aid is refused to no one and the Salvation Army is prepared for any emergency. The red shield has become a symbol of help wherever it is seen. It was such a symbol to the mother and father with nine children who turned to it when they had run out of funds on the last of their journey to California. The Salva tion Army provided them with food, shelter and fuel for the car. It was such a symbol to the family traveling toward Med- ford who could not reach the city limits in time for the moth er to give birth to her childJ The - Salvation Army gave complete s Care to the entire family for two i weeks.' k The problems are as varied as humanity and extend even into supervision and distribution of money for these families need ing financial guidance. - The United Medford Crusade supports this work. , Walls Dismissal Motion Turned Do wn Portland (U.R)U. S. District Judge Gus J. Solomon yester day denied a defense motion for dismissal of an indictment charging Wilbur Walls, 61, Port land, of illegal possession of gold bricks valued at $5000. Attorney Donald Walter peti tioned for dismissal on the ground that the trial had been delayed for too long a time. Walls was indicted more than a year ago. Judge Solomon, in issuing the denial, said the delay was caused by the slaying of Walls' former attorney, Oliver Kermit Smith, last April. Walls' trial date is Nov. 8. former Medford cab driver Woodrow Wilson Atwood, 42, was given three years probation after pleading guilty to a similar charge. Stephen Crippen, Med ' ford, included in the same in dictment, was acquitted by a federal court jury. Walls former ly resided in Ashland. SENATORS SILENT Democratic Senators John L. Mc Clellan, Ark. (right), and John Stennis, Miss, (center), returned to Washington aboard regularly scheduled Mili tary Transport Service plane and said tartly the Defense Department will have to explain statements that a special plush plane had been sent at their request to Europe to pick them up. Defense Department Apologizes To Solons Over Plane Request Washington (U.R) Two Democratic -senators today ac cepted the Defense Department's apology for erroneously report ing that they requested special plush air transportation from Europe. , i ' Sens. John L. McClellan (D Ark.), and John G. Stennis (D Miss.), said in separate state ments that, barring further de velopments, the highly public ized incident is closed. Public Apology Last night the department. publicly apologized for assert ing that the senators requested a special plane to fly them home from Spain at a cost of $10,000. At the same time the Air Force announced it was Sen. Dennis Chavez (D-NM), the third sen ator involved in the "contro ersy. "A review of this matter," the department said, "has establish ed tne fact that Sens. McClellan and Stennis did not request, nor were they made aware that the Air Force planned to fly special mission aircraft to Madrid for their return." .'. . "It is regretted that the inci dent caused embarrassment to the senators," the statement said. Requested by Escort The department subsequently said it checked with Col. Ralph J. Watson, military escort offi er for the senatorial group. Ac cording to the department, it was Watson who requested the special planes, apparently with out consulting the senators themselves. cer for the senatorial group. Ac partment's apology, commented that "it was certainly the least they should have done to straighten it out." Stennis said, "I was sure that they would make such a state ment when they got the facts. We were shocked and greatly surprised. I appreciate their statement after developing the full details." There is a lava flow about 40 miles in length near U.S. high way 54 in the central area of New Mexico. On The Side By E. V. Durling Tuesday, October 25, 1955 (Distributed by King Ftttura Syndicate. Inc.) The sale of wives is still in ef fect in Nigeria. Recently there have been complaints from bach elors about the high cost of wives there. They said they couldn't get enough money in hand to buy a wife. So now wives are being .sold on the installment plan. The total price for a Nigerian wife is about - $77: I don't know what the down pay ment is. Culinary Crime On a restaurant menu I saw listed "cream scallops." Sounds like a horrible dish. The man who first thought it up should be styled a culinary criminal. Only way to serve scallops prop erly is fried and plain. Gel It Right Does the Bible condemn the wearing of slacks by women? It is repeatedly said by persons who should know better that such is the case. In attempting to prove their contention they quote Deuteronomy 22:5 "The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth unto a man." The slacks worn by women are es pecially made for women. They are distinctly female attire. So, sir, if your wife wears slacks assure her it is not a sin. Inci dentally, I have been accused of being . against women wearing slacks. That's not so. I have fre quently said that women having figures like Katharine Hepburn should wear slacks. At the proper times and places, of course. Asking Queries from clients. Q. The British national game is soccer. I say that an American team once beat Britain's best soccer team. Right? A. Quite right, sir. In 1950, in the Soccer World Series games, held at Bilo Hori zonte, Brazil, an American soc cer team gave the British team a bad beating . . . Q. I say that no son, on reaching full growth, is ever shorter than his mother. Do you dispute this? Can you name a man who is shorter than his mother? Want to bet a stogie? A. I think Jack Westrope, the jockey, is shorter than his moth er. Over There United States soldiers sta tioned in Great Britain continue to express great admiration for English girls and to frankly say they prefer them as companions and wives to American girls. One G. I. Joe recently said with much enthusiasm: "The English girls are the best kissers. They hang onto each kiss as if it was their first or was going to be their last." - Business Woman The shrewdest business wom an of all times. So I note Hetty Green referred to. That's non sense. There have been many greater business women than she was. In fact, I could name quite a few now living who are much smarter in handling business deals than Hetty was. The wom en I have in mind started "with nothing but their ability. Hetty Green's father left her $6,000, 000. An aunt left her the income of a million dollars. Hetty also married a millionaire. No won der she was in possession of so much coin of the realm. She knew how to hold on to a dollar, but was no miracle woman of the business world. Ragtime Among the theatrical produc tions scheduled for presentation on Broadway in the near future are two based on the history of jazz. Somebody should also do a musical on the history of rag time. They could start off with an extremely picturesque back ground. That of the Maple Leaf Club in Sedalia, Mo. That was the place which inspired Scott Joplin to write that perennial hit tune titled "The Maple Leaf Rag.' Correction "You say Los Angeles carpen ters earn $116 a week," writes a feminine reader. "That is wrong. My daddy is a carpenter in Los Angeles and he only earns $114.40 a week. Send me a stogie carefully wrapped by return air mail and I will give it to my Daddy." Two Air Force Men Die in Plane Crash Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. (U.P.) Two Air Force officers were killed near here in the remote Upper Peninsula yesterday when their F89 Scorpion jet crashed in flames during a blind ing Fnowstorm. , Officials at Kinross Air Force Base identified the victims as 1st Lt. Francis J. Monohen of Aberdeen, Wash., and 2nd Lt. Wayne Riley of Oakdale, Pa. An Air Force spokesman said the nlane had taken off from the field on a routine training flight. State police at the scene said the two crew members had ra dioed they were ins trouble and that they planned to parachute from the cripoled plane. Troop ers said the two victims appar ently were unable to jump and tried to crash-land -in a desolate field. . - -.., MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE THREE Halloween Party Planned by Moose Monday Evening Women of the Moose will hold a business meeting Wednesday, October 26, at 8 p.m. at the Moose hall, 11 Newtown street.
