Specialized training at an early age is essential if the child league: Kinderg Makes Progress Medford's. kindergarten for jhard-of-hearing children, operat ed by Medtord Junior service league, now has five children en rolled. The school, which opened in 1952, is wholly supported by the league and the main fund raising event this year will be a Follies to be presented in early November. ; Teacher of the school this year isMiss Susan Drummond, grad uate of National College of -Education in Evanston, 111. She is aided each day by some mem ber of the league, and Mrs. B. Brandt Bartels, : a graduate of Central Institute for the Deaf; in St. Louis, Mo., and first teacher of the local school, serves in an advisory capacity. r i The school is equipped with modern devices which aid in training the hard-of-heving child to hear and speak. The equip ment includes an Ideal Melody Master group hearing aid, pur? chased by Medford Kiwanis club. . The curriculum - consists-' of : rhythmic training at the -piano, matching color and form, simple games, lipreading .. games and speech, as well as regular nur sery school routine; The school program is based on the theory that most - deaf children" have some hearing and that .with the. help -of hearing, aids, they , can be trained to distinguish speech rhythms. This is the'Tnethod used at such schools as Clarke School for the Deaf in North ampton, Mass., where Alexander Graham Bell was for 51 years a teacher, adviser and president of the board.
