"Prospects for Better US USSR Relations" will be .the topic of Stephen Carey when he speaks in Medford Friday, Octo ber 28, at First Presbyterian church. Mr.'Cary, national staff member of the American Friends Service - committee, is being brought to the city by Medford chapter, Oregon United Nations association, Medford League of Women Voters, Medford Coun cil of Church Women and Med ' 'ford Foreign Policy committee. Stephen Cary was one of six Quakers to visit Russia in June of this year. This goodwill mis sion travelled 12,000 miles in Russia and visited 10 Russian cities. Mr. Cary travelled S000 miles into the vast interior of Central Asia to see the "new lands" which Russia is plowing up in a desperate attempt to in crease its wheat production. A month's speaking tour through the western Qstatcs is being ar ranged by the American Friends Service committee so that Mr. Cary can report his observations and impressions. Members of the Quaker dele gation in addition to Mr. Cary included AFSC staffers Clarence Pickett, executive secretary em eritus, and Hugh Moore, finance secretary. Others were Wroe Alderson, marketing expert, Eleanor Zelliot, assistant editor of The American Friend, and William Edgerton, professor- of Russian at Pennsylvania' State University. The meeting in Medford is open to the public without charge. Halloween Parties On Calendar for Coming Week End Halloween , is a popular time for parties and carnicals, and several of these are planned for this coming week end. One of the largest will be a fall fomal dinner and dance at Rogue Valley Country club Sat urday, October 29. Cards an nouncing the event state that "witches brew" and hors d'oeuvres will be served from 8 to 9 p.m., with dinner and danc ing from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. The club orchestra will play for dancing. Dr. and Mrs. J. S. Heathering ton and Mr. and Mrs. James Henry are co-chairman of the club's social committee and are planning the various social events of the year. Reservations for the event art to be made by phoning the dub, 2-5965. 3 The October dance of Lively Rogues will be a costume party in the Halloween theme and and will be held Thursday, Oct ober 27, at the Ashland Elks club. Dinner will be served at 7 p.m. Members are asked to wear either Halloween costumes, or ' hard times" clothing. A prise will be given for the best cos tumed couple. Host couples will be Mr. and Mrs. Ben Todd and Mr. and Mrs. E. N. McKinstry. Reservations are to be made by telephoning Mrs. Ralph Matthews, 2-8767, afternoons or evenings. Pledged Eugene Forty University of Oregon co-eds were pledged re cently to Amphibians, women's swimming honorary society here. Among the pledges was Miss Kathleen Guiley, a freshman majoring in liberal arts. The Rev. C. W. Frost performed the ceremony at 7 o'clock in the evening. The bride's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Mahlon Sprague, route 3, box 69, and the bridegroom is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Rube Kin ney. Mr. Sprague gave his daughter in marriage. Her gown was of satin with sequin and lace trim and she wore a fingertip length veil. Her bouquet was a white orchid with white carnations. - Miss Cynthia Lee Hunt was the honor attendant and brides maid was Miss Kathleen Yvonne Dunivents Return From Motor Trip Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Dunivent returned to their home at 1488 South Peach street the first of the week after spending the past five weeks on a motor tour of Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska and Wyoming. At Clifton Hill, Mo., they vis ited with Mr. Dunivent's broth er, Jess, whom he had not seen for 33 years. In Iowa Mrs. Duni vent yisited her former home and relatives and friends whom she had not seen for 50 years. They report perfect weather for the entire trip. . Bridal Shower Held Last Sunday For Ruby Briggs Mrs. S. H. Oetinger Jr., and Mrs. Ira Brook : were hostesses for a shower party last Sunday afternoon which honored their niece, Miss Ruby Marie Briggs. It was held at the Oetinger home, 1900 Hazel street. Miss Briggs,' daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Briggs, Route 2, Cen tral Point, is to be married No vember 27 to Willard Thompson of 225 South Riverside avenue, Medford. The ceremony will be at Med ford Free Methodist church. Games were played, and re freshments served. The bride-to be was presented with gifts of linen for her new home. Attending the party were Mrs. Walter Slauson, Mrs. John Mur phy, Mrs. H. S. Oetinger, Miss Ethel Breseland, Mrs. Nellie Krause, Mrs. Ray Shotz, Rose burg, Mrs. Ben McManama, Mrs. Virgil Fowler, Mrs. William Dus enberry, Mrs. Jim West, Mrs. Hobart Johnson, Mrs. Walter Hobenson, Mrs. Malotte, the hon ored guest and hostesses. Christine Friesen was flower girl. Their gowns were of pink and blue taffeta and their flowers were white carna tions with pink and blue net tp match their gowns. Harold Kinney was best man for his brother and ushers were Don Roby and Richard Sprague, a brother of the bride. They also lighted the candles. Music was furnished by War ren Hanlin, who sang accom panied by Miss Grace Iverson. About 150 persons attended the wedding and the reception which was held in the church recreation hall. Mrs. Sprague wore a dark green suit and her corsage was of pink rosebuds. The bride groom's mother wore a rose col ored suit and white carnations formed her corsage. Miss Martha Gilman and Miss Kathleen Heard cut and served the cake and Miss Virginia Gil man poured punch. In charge of the guest book was Miss Sharon Hunt. The couple went to the coast for their wedding trip and now live at route 3, box 69, Medford. The bride attended Medford Senior high school. The bride groom is employed at Ross Lum ber company. Widmers Spend Several Weeks In Switzerland Mr.- and Mrs. Xavier Widmer, Route 3, returned home recent ly from a" two-month trip to Switzerland. They visited their brothers and sisters in the can tons of Luzern, Zurich and Schwyz. This was their first trip back to Switzerland in over 40 years. On the return trip they visited at Bellmore, L. I., N. Y., with two brothers of Mrs. Widmer. The entire trip was made by air. Dinner Party Mr. and Mrs. Karl Janouch, Old Stage road, entertained Sat urday evening at a dinner party for a small group of friends. The event was held at the Janouch home. The rooms were decorat ed with flower arrangements done by Mrs. John T. Holmer, a neighbor of the Janouchs. . Son Here Dr. Donald. Moore, South Holly street. f SALON Socialist Leader To Be Speaker For Local Club One of America's great orators and a militant battler for world peace, Norman Thomas, will speak here for Rogue Valley Knife and Fork club Monday, October 31. The speaker headed the Socialist party in this coun try for a quarter of a century and has been its standard bearer as presidential candidate no less than six times. Speaking on our chances for peace, the former presidential candidate believes the situatitn is not altogether hopeless. "Bisi short' of a universal agreement on controlled disarmament I would have very little hope for the world unless such agreement comes during the next genera tion." A "young 70" years of age, the tall, slim and active socialist party head says "he continues to carry on the battle for world peace. He admits frankly that he doesn't believe in unilateral disarmament. "When you live in a house with madmen you have to behave lige a madman yourself." But he holds to the theory that universally control led disarmament can bring world peace. In spite of the fact he has al ways been a well-beaten candi date in his quest for the nation's highest office, political oppon ents of the talented socialist have always expressed a high regard for his integnity and sin cerity. Ceremony Weds Nina Blessing, Marine Corporal Miss Nina Jean Blessing, daughter of Mrs. Marie Blessing, 1865 Barnett road, became the bride of Cpl. Lloyd R. Lindvall of the United States Marine corps at rites October 17 at First Methodist church. Corporal Lindvall's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Henry Lindvall, route 2, box 723, Central Point. The ceremony was read in the afternoon by Dr. Raymond Balcomb. Miss Twila Vance was the honor attendant and Frank Riter served as best man. Both are of Central Point. The bride wore a charcoal grey suit with matching shoes and purse. The bridegroom is to leave in November for ..further Marine corps duty in Japan and expects to be. there about a year. He re turned recently from 14 months service in Korea. u The bride attended Lincoln high school, Portland and was graduated from Medford Senior high school. The bridegroom, at tended Crater High school. The couple made a wedding trip to the Redwoods in Cali fornia. Rogue River Girl Contest Candidate Rogue River Miss Diane Dix on has been selected as a candi date in the contest for title of Sweetheart of Sigma Chi at Ore gon State college., Miss Dixon was graduated from Rogue River High school in 1955. She is ma joring in secretarial science. Miss Dixon is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Dixon, Rogue River. Plan Party FL club of Olive Rebekah lodge will hold a masquerade party Monday, October 24 at 8 p.m., in the home of Mrs. P. M. Aldredge, 1016 Court street. Those who attend should take a sack lunch. Sorority Holds Costume Party Alpha Lambda chapter of Ep silon Sigma Alpha sorority will meet Monday, October 24 at 8 p.m. at the. YMCA building. A costume party was held for members and guests October 17 and the Halloween theme was used for the decorations and re freshments. Mrs. Norman Ob erst, 1015 Queen Anne avenue, was hostess to the group at her home. Those who planned the party were Mrs. Robert Shangle and Mrs. W. H. Fischer, cochair men, Mrs. Oberst, Mrs. William Raymond and Mrs. Russell Rose borough. Guests were Mrs. Kenneth Curtis, Mrs. George Ice, Mrs. Vernon Ludwig and Mrs. W. F. Mclntyre. Mrs. Harold Adams won a prize for the best costume which depicted a skeleton.
