The United Nations was born in 1945, as World War II was drawing to an end and when men everywhere were saying that the horrors of war must never be allowed to happen again. The UN has been described as "a grouping of independent nations joining to work for a common aim . . . to keep the world per manently at peace." : ' (United Nations photo) Dag Hammarskjold United Nations Secretary General a Jose Maza Tenth President, General Assembly ' (UN photos) By Olive Starcher The United Nations marks its tenth birthday this year, and because of this anniversary, the annual United Nations day October 24 takes on special significance. Following the lead of President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who in a special proclamation called upon citizens and communities to observe the day in a manner which would demonstrate "their faith in, and support of the United Nations" Medford is holding a number of anniversary events. ' . Plans were coordinated by members of Medford chapter, Ore gon United Nations association, for special events not only on United Nations day but throughout the preceding week. Mayor Earl Miller also issued a proclamation in which he urged officials and citizens to observe the day, noting that "the United Nations has entered on its tenth year of unremitting labor toward realizing the hopes of mankind for an ordered world basecPon the supremacy of reason and justice Highlighting the week will be a public ceremony today at 1:30 p.m. at Hedrick Junior High school when a Sequoia giganteum will be planted on the school grounds. Miss Judy Raphorst (center), Southern Oregon college student from The Netherlands, and Miss Michelle Olliver, SOC student from Vannes, France, will be guests of Oak Grove school on UN day. Gregory, son of Mr. and Mrs. Don Elliot, 2671 Elliot street, holds the plaque which will be placed near the tree.- - (Brainerd photo) Bruce Manley, president of Medford unit, Oregon United Nation association, attended the tenth anniversary UN meeting held in San Francisco last summer. Mr. Manley will participate in the tree planting . ceremony and will present Gregory Elliot with a special United Nations pin as a memento of the important day. (Brainerd photo) . Information booths downtown are part of the United Nations week program in Medford. Pictured here at the booth in Mann's store are Mrs. George Rode (seated) and Mrs. G. R. Ringo, UN association members who aided with celebration arrangements. Literature is being distributed from the booths at Mann's and First National bank, and orders taken for UNICEF (children's division Christmas cards, notepaper and other material. Purpose of the UN week and day is to acquaint everyone with the aims and accomplishments of the international organization. Elizabeth, David and Stephen were all born the year the United Nations charter was signed.
