So. of Phoenix By DANIEL F. GILMOHE ' United Press Correspondent ' Nicosia, Cyprus U.R) Field Marshal Sir John Harding, the new civil governor - and com mander in chief of Cyprus, is trying to keep the lid from blowing off this little island which Marc Anthony once gave to Cleopatra. Makarios III, archbishop of the Greek Orthodox Church, is waging a sort of passive holy war against Harding. Mufti Mehmet Dana Effendi, leader of the island's Turks, is watching Makarios warily. "Dighenis," the almost le gendary leader of .the terroristic Eioka, the national organization of. Cypriot fighters, is leading from his hideout the Greek gangs which are assisting' Britons and "collaborators" and blowing up government buildings. Tangled Situation It is the most tangled situation which Cyprus has faced in its 5000-year history. Britains owns it. Greece wants it. Turkey says that if Britain gives it up, Turkey must have it. Life proceeds fairly normally in the cities. But there is an at mosphere of . oppressive fear. And the atmosphere of near war is apparent in 'the increasing numbers of . British troops, the strong forces of Cypriot-Cyprus- policemen and the newly organ ized "special branch" intelli gence corps which is trying to root out the terrorists. It is out in the country that the atmosphere of Cyprus be comes really apparent. I made an inspection trip, along the winding mountain roads, into the rocky "bad lands' in a desert-yellow British Royal Air Force car. The Cypriot as the people of Cyprus are called chauffer drove at reckless speed. Well Armed At his left lounged an RAF enlisted man, with his rifle be side him. He wore a tropical suit. As we passed through steaming hot villages, I took off my coat and invited him to do likewise. "I really can't," he said mild ly. He opened his coat to show the revolver in his shoulder holster. Britain is determined to keep Cyprus because it is becoming a most important military base, a base important to the entire Middle East from Turkey to Pakistan. Who am I? Although I graze like a sheep nibbling grass close to the ground, I wash myself cat fashion, licking my dexterous five-fingered forepaws and run ning them through my fur after each meal. Standing, I can look over a man's head and may weigh up to 200 pounds. My young is born so pink as to seem half-transparent. We once lived in bands up to 1,000 but with civilization's com ing, our herds today seldom ex ceed 50. Vegetarians, we feed early mornings, late evenings and at night. Some of my 50 or so rel atives, members of an ancient order are no bigger than rab bits, some climb trees and can leap 40 feet to the ground with out injury, some live among rocks and cliffs with the sure footedness of a chamois, some prefer swamps, and as for me, I take kindly to the desert. My life span is around 15 years. My head is delicately shaped: a twitching rabbit-like nose, big soft eyes, a deer-like The navy specifies stressed skin panel construction in .the manufacture of collapsible, re usable plywood containers for shipping officers' household effects. A timid creature, my sight, smell and hearing . stand me in good stead to detect enemies afar. The mouse-colored doe is smaller and slimmer than the male. I have four toes on each hind foot three of them so trivial they don't count, but the one toe is tremendously long and strong and has a huge spur with a curving razor-sharp tip, dead ly in combat. My tail often con stitutes 10 per cent of my weight and its uses are many: prop, jumping pole with one blow I can break a man's leg or a bal ancing organ. In running I use my hind legs and my powerful thick tail and can leap over a seven-foot ience with ease, and in a series of 16 foot long broad jumps, make a top speed of. 25-30 miles an hour. For a voice, I have a rasping cough or grunt. After a 38-40 day gestation, the tiny bumble-bee sized young ster, less than an inch long and sightless, earless, and hind-legless hitches up into the protec tive pouch in about 15 minutes, usually unaided by the mother, in search of food and shelter and once in, attaches himself to the milk gland which swells to make contact sure for several weeks' duration. Then, with a i special organ the mother pumps milk into the young one's gullet, drop by drop. In six months, he is ready to abandon the built in baby carriage. I am: A Giraffe, B. Kankaroo, C.
