Fir Plywood Show Slated in Medford On October 22-23 A Fir Plywood jubilee show, sponsored by the Douglas Fir Plywood association, is schedul er ed for a two-day stay in Medford on Oct. 22 and 23. The show is part of the year-long promo tional program being conducted by the association as a part of the west coast plywood indus try's 50th anniversary. The shew will be located on the Medford High school grounds, and will be open from 2 to 9 p.m. both days. Displavs will cover elements of the "50 Golden Ideas" for fir plywood construction unveiled during the industry's annual meeting in mid-June . at Port land. They will include a ply wood mobile telling the story of industry promotion through DFPA, the story of markets and shipping, a sound-color movie showing how plywood is manu factured, and a fir plywood "menagerie" of circus animals built from plywood. A circus format is used for the show. Exhibits are set up in two hiehway semi-trailers which frame a circus square covered by a carnival-type tent. The two themes which domin ate the displays are "You can build anything with fir ply wood," and "Fir plywood is made here sold everywhere." : Following its stay here, the jubilee caravan, will move to (rKlamath Falls. Motorcycle Wreck Fatal To Two Men El Centro, Calif . (U.R) A Ma rine from Baltimore, Md., and a Salt Lake City man were killed last night when the motorcycle . on which they were riding crashed into a car on U.S. High way 80 seven miles west of here. The dead were identified as Marine Cpl. Melvin M. Berry, 22, of Baltimore, Md., stationed at Camp Pendleton, Calif., and Leland A. Fisher, 28, of Salt Lake City Utah. The driver of the car, Stephen J. Halpin, of .El Centro, was ta ken to Pioneers Memorial hos pital in nearby ' Brawley, with "major injuries." M. A. (International Soundphoto) Reno Asks To See Priest Before Signing Confession Hollywood (U.R) Police said today a 27-year-old ex-convict will be permitted to see a priest before, he signs a confes sion in which he admitted strangling his attractive young stepmother and stabbing his fa ther. Ralph Reno, returned here last night by Hollywood detec tives from Reno, asked to see the priest before signing his confession. He told officers that after he strangled Mrs. Stella Reno, 34, with a boxer's skip rope. He stabbed his father, An drew Reno, 57. But Reno also insisted that his father later helped him carry the woman's body out of the 18 Illnesses in Ashland Reported Twenty-three cases ' of com municable diseases, 18 of them in Ashland, were reported to the county health department during the week ended Oct. 15, accord ing to figures released today by the department. Leading the list were 13 cases of influenza, with 12 in Ashland and one in Medford. There were three cases of trench mouth, in cluding one each in Ashland, Medford, and Phoenix. Two cases of measles were re ported in Ashland. There were two cases of pneumonia, with one each' in Ashland and Med ford, and two cases of chicken pox, with one each in Ashland and Talent. (U.R) Convict-author Caryl Chessman, granted a hearing on one writ by the Supreme Court, has ap plied for another writ-one that would grant, him freedom to write. Shortly after the ' U.S. Su preme Court granted Chessman permission yesterday to wage a legal battle for the right to a new trial, he began a fight to be allowed to write for publica tion while in San Quentin pris on's Death Row. His application was for warded by prison officials to Marin County Superior Judge Jordan Martinelli. It seeks . to recover manu scripts seized from Chessman by prison authorities and to outlaw the rule against writing for pub lication by Death Row' inmates as arbitrary and capricious. Chessman, author of "Cell 2455, Death Row," and "Trial by Ordeal," had to surrender several manuscripts recently to prison authorities. ' (U.R) A 19-year-old boy confessed he beat his mother to death with a hammer "because my parents aon't understand me" and then tried to kill himself by leaping in front of two cars and a truck, police said today. ' The youth, John Hawley, was reported in serious condition at pital about 60 miles from here. Pasadena Detective Richard L. Jamison said Hawley confessed murdering his mother. "I did it," the detective quoted the boy. "I killed my mother. I hit her with a hammer and stabbed her with a knife." The youth underwent surgery for eight hours Monday for in juries suffered in his suicide try after fleeing from her in his car. Mrs. Iris Hawley, 45, wife of a wealthy advertising executive William A. Hawley, was found dead Monday by a maid in the family's fashionable home in the Oak Knoll district here. The Hawley boy apparently fled in his car after his mother was killed, police said. Navy Jet's Speed Said Over 700 MPH Washington (U.R) The Navy says its tiny A4D jet attack bomber which has set a new world speed record of nearly 700 miles an hour around a closed circuit course can fly even faster. "The new record does not re flect the maximum speed capa bilities" of the bantam bomber, the Navy said. The A4D, built by Douglas Aircraft, set a new record of 695.163 m.p.m. in flying five times around a 100 kilometer course last Saturday at Edwards Air Force Base. Muroc, Calif. The plane's new record com pares with the 760 m.p.h. speed of sound at sea level. ' It bet tered by 45 miles an hour the previous record for a 500-kilo meter measured course set by Air Force Maj. John L. Arm strong in an F86H Sabre Jet on Sept. 3, 1954, at Dayton, Ohio. The new record was set by Lt. Gordon Gray, 32, La Jolla, Calif. The world's official absolute speed record of .822 m.p.h., set on a straightaway course, was established last August by Air Force Col. Horace Hanes in an F100C Super Sabre. Hilt Man Fined In District Court Antonio Gonzalis, 28, Hilt, Calif., was fined $255 and had his driver's license suspended for 90 days, in district court Monday for driving while under the in fluence of intoxicating liquor. In addition to the fine, Gon zalis was sentenced to 30 days in jail, to be suspended on the pay ment of the fine. A charge of larceny, concern ing theft of an auto, against Gonzalis was dropped when it was learned that he had taken a car of the identical make and model as his own by mistake. Defense Raps Lack Of Paternity Test Minneapolis U.R) Defense attorneys in Dr. A. Arnold Axil rod's murder trial tried to ques tion a key prosecution witness late Monday. on why tests were not made to 'determine whether the dentist was the father of his alleged victim's unborn child. The attempt was blocked when District Judge Leslie Anderson sustained prosecution objections that Dr. Erling Brauti, a young University of Minnesota doctor, didn't have to answer two ques tions about his examination of the dead woman's body. Chief Defense Counsel Sidney W. Goff demanded to know why blood tests were not made to de termine whether the 50-year-old Axilrod had fathered Mrs. Eliza beth Mary Moonen's unborn child. Goff also said tests showed Mrs. Moonen had engaged in sexual intercourse shortly be fore her death. He asked wheth er tests could not have shown whether Axilrod was the man. Axilrod, a 50-year-old husband and father, is accused of seduc ing the attractive, 21-year-old Mrs. Moonen when she came to his dental office. On the night of April , 22, it is charged, he took her for a car ride and stran gled her when she threatened to "tell the world" that he had made her pregnant. Drivers Cited in Two Auto Mishaps Two people were cited in two of four automobile accidents Sunday in Medford, according to city police. No injuries were listed. Charlotte Brenneman, 600 Whitman place, was cited for failure to yield right of way when her car collided with a vehicle operated by Ronnie Lee Hahner, 739 Dakota st. The ac cident occurred at the corner of West Main and Ivy sts. Betty Gerwick Miller, 411 Oakwood dr., was cited for fail ure to yield right of way when the car she was driving was in volved in a collision with a car operated by Charles Leroy Campbell, 559 Keene Way dr. The mishap happened at Oak wood dr. and. Richmond ave. A car owned by Eugene Roger Richmond, 528 South Fir st., was struck by an unknown-vehicle while parked on North Central ave. between East Sixth and East Main sts. A car driven by William Ho bart Bowman, Arroyo Grande, Calif., collided with-a stop sign post at the corner of King st. and Stewart 'ave., police said. Helix Youth Wins Top Honors at Portland U.R) For a second year in a row, a Helix, Ore., youth took top 4-H beef honors at the 45tK annual Pacific Inter national exposition , here yester day. George N. Craig said martial law might be lifted if the "highest" union authority guarantees an end to violence. Craig kept full martial law and 400 National Guardsmen at New Castle, where nine persons were injured in a gun battle at the strikebound Perfect Circle Corp. foundry Oct. 5. But he lifted martial law and removed 125 troopers at nearby Richmond, site of two other Per fect Circle plants. At Hagers town, where a fourth Perfect Circle plant is located, the guard force was cut from 275 to 200. Guardsmen at New Castle re ported the town "peaceful as a church mouse." But Craig said Monday that the troopers could not leave until the "highest au thority" of the striking CIO United Auto Workers directs its members to halt all violence. Sam Coon (R.-Ore.) predicted here last night that the Army engineers would withdraw their objections and recommened con struction of John Day dam on the Columbia river as a low-head project. Coon told the' Arlington Chamber of Commerce he favor ed building the dam without the flood control features that have drawn objections from eastern Oregon residents and Columbia river fishing interests.
