world speed record of nearly
700 miles an hour around a
closed circuit course can fly
even faster.
"The new record does not re

the Navy said.
The A4D, built by Douglas
Aircraft, set a new record of
695.163 m.p.m. in flying five
times around a 100 kilometer
course last Saturday at Edwards
Air Force Base. Muroc, Calif.
The plane's new record com
pares with the 760 m.p.h. speed

tered by 45 miles an hour the
previous record for a 500-kilo
meter measured course set by
Air Force Maj. John L. Arm
strong in an F86H Sabre Jet on
Sept. 3, 1954, at Dayton, Ohio.
The new record was set by Lt.

Defense Raps Lack
Of Paternity Test
Minneapolis U.R) Defense
attorneys in Dr. A. Arnold Axil
rod's murder trial tried to ques
tion a key prosecution witness
late Monday. on why tests were
not made to 'determine whether
the dentist was the father of his
alleged victim's unborn child.
The attempt was blocked when
District Judge Leslie Anderson
sustained prosecution objections
that Dr. Erling Brauti, a young
University of Minnesota doctor,
didn't have to answer two ques
tions about his examination of
the dead woman's body.
Chief Defense Counsel Sidney
W. Goff demanded to know why
blood tests were not made to de
termine whether the 50-year-old
Axilrod had fathered Mrs. Eliza
beth Mary Moonen's unborn
child.
Goff also said tests showed
Mrs. Moonen had engaged in
sexual intercourse shortly be
fore her death. He asked wheth
er tests could not have shown
whether Axilrod was the man.
Axilrod, a 50-year-old husband
and father, is accused of seduc
ing the attractive, 21-year-old
Mrs. Moonen when she came to
his dental office. On the night
of April , 22, it is charged, he
took her for a car ride and stran
gled her when she threatened to
"tell the world" that he had
made her pregnant.

Tension Eases
At Perfect Circle
New Castle, Ind. (U.R) Ten
sion eased in strife-torn New
Castle today and Gov. George
N. Craig said martial law might
be lifted if the "highest" union
authority guarantees an end to
violence.
Craig kept full martial law
and 400 National Guardsmen at
New Castle, where nine persons
were injured in a gun battle at
the strikebound Perfect Circle
Corp. foundry Oct. 5.
But he lifted martial law and
removed 125 troopers at nearby
Richmond, site of two other Per
fect Circle plants. At Hagers
town, where a fourth Perfect
Circle plant is located, the guard
force was cut from 275 to 200.
Guardsmen at New Castle re
ported the town "peaceful as a
church mouse." But Craig said
Monday that the troopers could
not leave until the "highest au
thority" of the striking CIO
United Auto Workers directs its
members to halt all violence.
