During a recent day on the uplands of the Cascades, I saw numbers of bear, deer and porcu pine, and once three coyotes loping single file on the road just ahead of the car before they took to the second-growth. The tree farm forester at the wheel of our car said we might have seen his six trained cougar cats if it wasn't that he had them on patrol up Pity Creek. He said he'd brought them up from kit tens, which were seven to start with but one had up and died on him.' He liked the idea of training cougars to keep down the deer more than catering to the hunters. Said there was never a cougar known to be a cigarette fiend or to make a campfire. The forester had an idea for a Disneyland picture. In it the baby trees would be menaced by villainous deer who threatened to butcher the young forest with their browsing. Then up would come Charlie Cougar, the hero of the picture-and what he would do to the deer villains! I felt bound to tell him I didn't think Disney would go for the idea. Everywhere the Deer ... "Browse" is a wordf growing importance in the changing for ests. As cattle graze to live, deer browse, feeding on . the tender twigs, bark and shoots, and some times roots, of trees and shrubs. Deer have learned to do right well for themselves on Douglas fir seedlings. Recently I've seen numbers of beheaded baby trees that are doomed to deformed and stunted growth. 9o the welcome sign is out for hunters on many a tree farm and the$ational forest this fall in the Douglas fir, as well as for cou gars. The growing population of deer is becoming . a serious menace to tree growing. Hunters remain a dreadful fire risk in the forest, however, on the basis of past records. But .with increased harvest of the game crop becoming a growing need of Douglas fir forestry, a pattern of good relations is being worked out in many areas be tween forest land managers and sportsmen's clubs. There is promise that the deer hunter will change from a fire risk to a fire stopper. The Great Change ... Fireweed, fern and berry brush are soon crowded out in these great days of the changing, growing, young forest. Used to be that beekeepers could trail in with their swarms after the log gers and be sure of a honey har vest from fireweed for years on end. The little trees soon run the bee men out nowadays. Alarmed tree farm foresters continue t0' send in reports of bears as a tree crop menace. Bruin has found the sugar in the bark of Douglas fir seedlings and saplings much to his liking. So now in places he is eating trees like the fabled hodag of Paul Bunyan's time. The foresters may be forced in time to dust all seedling areas with snoose. The bears would then acquire the snoose habit. Exhaustive and painful re searches have demonstrated that all snoose addicts love little trees and will do anything to help grow them. Engineer Training Examinations Ready Examinations are now open for highway engineer trainee in the Bureau of Public roads throughout the United States, and for student trainee, for duty in Washington, D.C., it has been announced by the Civil Service commission. Completion of three or fours years of a civil engineering curriculum, or equivalent ex perience in civil engineering is required for highway engineer trainee prositions. Use Mall Tribune Want Ads Argentina Warns Peron Supporters Buenos Aires (U.R) The gov ernment, using troops to back up its words, wrned supporters of Juan D. Peron today against any violence on this 10th anni versary of the revolt which con firmed the ousted dictator in power. Soldiers were stationed at key points throughout the nation 'to keep order among still militant Peronistas. Walls throughout Buenos Aires were plastered with posters warning that any attempt to or ganize protest strikes or street demonstrations would be "se verely repressed." Thousands of soldiers backed up by tanks and artillery guard ed the approaches to Buenos Aires' industrial suburbs where pro-Peron rioting was most like ly to start. Trio Found Safe On Larch Mountain , ' Portland (U.R) A man and two boys, lost several hours on Larch mountain east of here, were found safe early today. Walter E. Raschke, 50, and his 14-year-old son, Terry, and Jerry Kekel, 10, all of Portland, were to walk from the top of Larch mountain down a trail to Mult nomah Falls yesterday where they were to meet Raschke's wife. When they didn't arrive at 7:30 p.m. Mrs. Raschke notified the Multnomah county sheriff's office. The trio was found at 1:20 a.m. by two deputies on a wooded cliff about a mile below Multnomah Basin road. They were in good condition and had prepared to spend the night in the open. BIKE PENALTY . Minneapolis (U.R) A rarely used Minneapolis traffic law was imposed recently against a 13-year-old boy. bicycle rider. Police tagged William Condra for care less riding of his bicycle. U.R) The National Guard was on the alert to move into Sheboygan today if rioting breaks out o"ver a ship ment of clay for the strikebound Kohler Co. But leaders of the CIO United Auto Workers, on strike against the plurnbingware company since Aug. 5, 1954, promised they would not attempt to prevent the unloading of the Norwegian motorship Divina. Pleas Issued ' They issued a plea to residents of Sheboygan and nearby Kohler, Wis., not to demonstrate at the docks, lest the union is blamed for it. Wisconsin Gov. Walter Kohler reveled last week that National Guardsmen have been alerted to put down any repetition of the violence which broke out on the Sheboygan docks last July. Savings Bond Sales Increase in Oregon Sale of E and H series United States savings bonds in Oregon have increased 29.5 per cent over 1S54 for the first nine months of this year, according' to Ted Gamble, Oregon savings bonds committee chairman. Sales for September were $3, 294,272 and for the January September period, $35,147,865. . According to Morris B. Leon ard Sr., chairman of the Jack-' son county savings bond com mittee, sales in this county in September amounted to $98,542. In 1954 sales were $81,264 for the same month.
