Sams Valley Those who plan to attend the meeting of the Sams Valley cunit are asked to call Mrs. Earl Peffley of Gold Hill, telephone 5-9267 or Mrs. Arnold Gosnell, also of Gold Hill, telephone 5-9027, for infor mation concerning tools needed for their meeting Tuesday, Oc tober 18. The meeting will bpen at 10:30 a.m., and will be held at the home of Mrs. Edgar Pleasant. Luncheon will be served by a luncheon committee. Gift wrap ping will be demonstrated in the morning and the afternoon les son will be on basket weaving. Shady Cove Mrs. Max Hawks will be the hostess at her home on Rogue River drive for Shady Cove unit members Tuesday, Oc tober 18 at 10:30 a.m. Mrs. William Bishop and Mrs. Hawks will give a lesson on basketry. Mrs. A. C. Copper and Mrs. B. Nork will demonstrate gift wrapping. Rogue-Elk Rogue Elk unit will meet Wednesday, October 19 at the home of Mrs. Carl Richardson at 10:30 a.m. Gift wrapping will be demon strated and each woman is asked to take with her a box, wrap ping paper and ribbon. The lead ers are Mrs. George Tockstein and Mrs. Ersal Meyers. The lesson project will be basket weaving. For the lesson those who attend should take a small pan, sponge, razor blade, ruler, plastic apron, ice pick and scissors. The leaders will be Mrs. William Bishop and Mrs. Ralph Lane of the Shady Cove unit. All women ire the vicinity in terested are invited to attend. Table service will be needed. Wohelo, the watchword of the Camp Fire Girls, expresses the high ideals of the organization. Swinney celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with open house at their home, 1013 West Ninth street, Sunday, October 9. The Swinneys were married October 11, 1905, in Grants Pass. Mrs. Swinney, the former Min nie Wooldridge, is a daughter of James L. and Rhoda Wooldridge, southern Oregon pioneers, and was born in Jackson county. (Brainerd photo) Swinneys Hold Open House-on Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. George W. Swinney observed their 50th wedding anniversary Sunday, October 9 when they held open house from 2 to 5 o'clock in the afternoon at their home at 1013 West Ninth street. The couple was married Oc tober 11, 1905 at the Free Meth odist church in Grants Pass. Mrs. Swinney, the former Miss Minnie M. Wooldridge, was born at Missouri flat on the Ap plegate. Mr. Swinney was born in Kansas and came to Oregon in 1888 when he was six years old. He spent many years as a car penter and as a faller and scaler in logging camps. For the anniversary - observ ance Mrs. Swinney wore a blue lace dress over blue silk and her corsage of pink carnations was tied with gold ribbon. More than 100 guests called on the couple and they were presented many gifts. In charge of the gifts were Miss Sandra Farlow and regis tering the guests were Miss Lois Farlow, both granddaughters of the couple. Serving cake during the open house were Mrs. Gene Glazier, another granddaughter; Mrs. Le- Roy Swinney, a daughter-in-law, and Mrs. Fred Farlow, a daugh ter. Coffee was served bv Mrs. Fred Sharp, a sister of Mrs. Swinney, and Mrs. Vincent Swinney, another daughter-in-law. Presiding at the Dunch bowl were Miss Janet Swinney and Mrs. Raymond Swinney, grand daughter and daughter-in-law of the couple. MAIN PHONE 3-S34S I Block East of Hawthorn Park Seal Chairmen Honored Guests At Annual Event Christmas Seal Sale chairmen from throughout Jackson county were honored at a luncheon Wednesday noon at the Rogue Valley Country club. Fifteen wo men who will direct the coming seal sale were invited. Mrs. M. O. Grove, seal sale chairman for the Jackson Coun ty Public Health association, pre sided. Speaking, besides Mrs. Grove were Mrs. Connie James, Portland, director of public re lations for the Oregon Tuber culosis association; Mrs. Henry Padgham, county president; Miss Dorothy Huskey, health educa tor for Jackson County Public Health department; and Mrs. Chester Guches, past president of the county association. The present tuberculosis pic ture in the county was described by Miss Huskey, who said that athough the death rate from the disease has dropped, there are still as many cases per capita annually as there were 30 years ago. An estimated 100 cases are undetected in Jackson county, according to Miss Huskey. She reminded the chairmen that tu berculosis is a "catching" dis ease, but is a needless one, in asmuch as both the cause and prevention are known. Chairmen invited were Mrs. J. Discussion Group Plans Meeting In Eagle Point Eagle Point Second in a se ries of discussion groups for pre school mothers will be held at the Eagle Point Elementary school Tuesday, October 18, at 10 a.m. in Darrell Copeland's room. Mrs. Cleo Kent, Jackson Coun ty Public Health department nurse, will lead discussion. The film "helping your child accept the do's" and "helping your child face the don'ts" will be shown. Linn, principal of McLoughlin Junior High school, will acquaint parents with the school's new procedure at a meeting of McLoughlin Parent Teacher association Thursday, October 20. This will be the first session of the school year, and is scheduled for 8 p.m., in the Girls' gymnasium. Members of the teaching staff will be introduced by Mr. Linn, arid arrangements are being made so parents may have an opportunity to meet with the teachers in a "buzz session." Serving as officers of Mc Loughlin Junior High PTA this year are Horace M. Doolen, pres ident; Mrs. Lloyd N. Parsons, vice-president; Benoyd S. Bay less, secretary; and Mrs. E. G. Paschke, treasurer. Royal Neighbor State Supervisor To Visit Lodges Mrs. May Logan, Portland, state supervisor for the Royal Neighbors of America lodge, will make official visits to two RNA lodges of the area during the week. A homecoming dinner will be held by the Medford RNA Thursday, October 20, at 6 p.m. The covered dish event will be gin at 6 p.m., and families and friends of the lodge women are invited. Mrs. Harry Bryant, Medford, was elected grand chief during the sessions. Installation of grand temple officers was held Tuesday eve ning with Mrs. Mildred Har wood as supreme" installing offi cer, Mrs. Carrie Broxori, supreme senior and Mrs. Violet Davis, su preme manager. Mrs. Bryant, Medford was installed grand chief. During the installation a cour tesy line was formed for Mrs. Bryant by the Medford degree staff and they also gave an ad dendum in honor of Mrs. Bryant with her grandson, Craig Bry ant, participating. Mr. Bryant presented his wife with an or chid corsage. Songs were sung by Mrs. Richard Schuhart of Medford, after which gifts were presented to all the officers in an unusual ceremony. The offi cial closing of grand temple was held, with a buffet closing the session. Another highlight of the con vention, held jointly with the Knights of Pythias grand tem ple convention, was a banquet Monday evening at the. Elks temple in Ashland with about 225 attending. The grand march was led by Oregon and visiting officers, and dancing closed the evening. Music was furnished by Abby Green and his orchestra. Entertainment was provided by Diane and Patsy Ryan, Bob Roberts and Duke Pothier, a group of dancers from Colleen Hope's studio composed of Judy Andresen, Debbie and Glenn Ra der and Sandra Laing; a quartet composed of Messrs. Carter, fcjuackenbusl Mason and Ken- yon and a drill by groups from the DOKK and Nomads of Av- rudaka. Entertainment for a tea last Sunday afternoon was provided by Talisman Rosebud council. Mitchell of Washington distributed reports on the Oregon-Washington Py thian home at Vancouver. Wash.. and Thomas A. Spencer of the home spoke. At a session Tuesday Mrs. Myers, state organizer and su preme royal prelate of the Sun shine Girls reported on the insti tution of the Oreeon Grand Council of Pythian Sunshine Girls. Past Supreme Chief Fan nie Gordon of Texas and Su preme Manager Mamie Gleason of Washington both addressed the bisters. Mrs. Joe Cook. Mrs. Ida Ire land and Mrs. Edna Lamp will De the refreshment committee for Tuesday night's meeting. Chapter Meeting Held at Nelsons Xi Mu, exemplar chapter of Beta Sigma Phi, met Wednes day evening at the home of Mrs. John S. Nelson. Following the business meeting conducted by the president, Mrs. J. Edgar Moir, the program was present ed by Mrs. Nick R. DeWitt, who gave excerpts from books by Cornelia Otis Skinner.
