(Brainerd photo) Medford University Women Announce Annual National Art Week Show at Hotel Medford branch, American As Oaociatiori of University Women announces it will sponsor the annual art exhibit -during Na- tional Art Week October 30 November 5. " A luncheon meeting was held by the group recently, also at the hotel, the first of the sessions for the group for fall months. One of the oldest organiza tions in the city, this is the 48th year of the club. No particular celebration has been planned as observance of the event, officers stated. The group was organized through the efforts of Mrs. H. C. Kentner who now lives in Hol- Mrs. F. K. Deuel is the remain ing charter member living in Medford. At first meetings were held in the homes of the various mem bers and for many years they met in the Medford public li brary. Chrysanthemums To Be Topic of , Jacksonville Club Jacksonville A group discus sion on chrysanthemums will be 7, given at the Jacksonville Gar den club meeting Thursday, Oc tober 20. The seion will be held at the home of Mrs. Lance Of fenbacher, which is located about two miles above Ruch on the Upper Applegate road. Roll call will be answered by naming a chrysanthemum and its type. A club display of chry santhemums also will be a part of the afternoon program. vited to submit work for display. This art exhibit is to encour age and help create art-consciousness in the Rogue, River valley, as well as to establish southern Oregon as an art-producing area, it is stated. Each artist is limited to two pictures, the committee states, and the pictures must have been executed within the past two years and not shown previously in an AAUW art exhibit. Oils and pastels must be framed and water color, charcoals and draw ings must be matted. Dates set for exhibit this year are Thursday and Friday, No vember 3 and 4. Widespread interest has been shown in this AAUW sponsored exhibit in past years and local artists eagerly await this show ing. An invitation to all amateur and professional artists to dis play their pictures in this ex hibit is extended by the committee. Further information may be obtained from Mrs. R. H. West Side Club Holds Meeting; Party Announced The October meeting of West Side School Mothers' club was held Wednesday evening at the home of Mrs. Fred Beck, Old Stage road. Refreshment host esses were Mrs. Lewis Conger and Mrs. Roy A. McLaughlin. Mrs. Shirley Croucher, vice president, presided in the ab sence of the president, Mrs. Walter Graff. Plans are being made for the school Halloween party to be held Friday. October 28, from 7:30 to 9 at the school. Prizes will be awarded for the best costumes. A Christmas card sale is now in, progress and orders must be in before November 1. Any member wishing to place an or der may do so during the week at the school and for further information may call' Mrs. Graff, telephone 3-1323. Church Women Announce Two Coming Events Medford Council of Church Women has announced two events in which they are par ticipating in connection with their theme of "Christian World Relations." Stephen G. Cary, speaker for the American Friends Service committee, who has just re turned from inside Russia and Siberia, will speak Friday, Octo ber 28 at the Presbyterian church at 8 p.m., as the first event in line with the theme. With Mr. Cary on the recent trip were six men including bus iness and professional persons, They were given unusual oppor tunities for seeing and confer ring with the people while there, it is pointed out. The speaker heads the Amer ican section of the AFSC and the trip which he and the other men made was an American Quaker goodwill mission. Because they visited the outly ing districts in Russia it is be lieved by those in charge that agricultural people of the Rogue valley especially may be inter ested, though the church women point out he should bring a mes sage for all. The following week on Friday, November 4 at St. Mark's Epis copal church the Medford coun cil of women will observe World Community day. "Give us this day our daily bread," will be the theme of this session and Food and Agriculture organiza tions findings will be studied. The FOA is an organization which was instituted during the latter part of World War II at Hot Springs, Va., where repre sentatives of 44 nations came to gether to work toward feeding the undernourished people of the world. Program chairman for the day will be Mrs. Wilbur Arnold. The business session will open at 10 a.m., and those who attend are to take a box lunch for the noon meal. Officers will be installed and a program and dedication of "Parcels for Peace," will be con ducted in the afternoon. New York (U.R) Give the family a beverage surprise. Girl Scout Training Class o Open Tuesday Morning Sunday, October 16, 1955 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TMBTJrTE TVf T Rogue Valley Area Girl Scout council will conduct a 16-hour basic group leadership training course in each district of the council this month. The course will be given in the Medford district October 18, 20, 25 and 27 at St. Mark's Episcopal church Guild hall from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day. The training sessions will be conducted by Miss Mary Aldrich, executive director, assisted by volunteer trainers. These will be Mrs. Al Carrara, Mrs. W. H. Fisher and Mrs. George Ice, in termediate trainers, and Mrs. Maurice Ritchey and Mrs. Wil- mer Warren, Brownie trainers. This course is planned espe cially for new leaders and as sistant leaders of Brownie, In termediate and Senior Scout troops. Leaders are asked to take their handbooks which "may be purchased at the official equip ment agency at the J. C. Penney store. A notebook, pencil and a sack lunch should be taken to each session. Coffee will be serv ed by the training committee. Every new leader and assistant leader is required to attend two training sessions before she reg isters with her troop. The train ing committee recommends all four sessions for new leaders with less than one year's expe rience with a troop. The third session will cover the outdoor program and will be a cookout for both Brownie and Interme diate leaders. Troop leaders who have had more than one year's experience with a troop may at tend any session if they would like some new ideas on badge program, Brownie program fields,, games, songs, indoor or outdoor crafts, impromptu dra matics or ceremonies. Interested adults over 18 years of age and mothers of girls in troops are invited to attend any one of the sessions to learn more about the Girl Scout and Brownie program so they can be of assistance to tHe troop leaders and help on the troop committees. Through the course leaders gain the knowledge, skills and confidence they need to carry out the Girl Scout program with girls in their own troops, it is said. This course affords opportunities for demonstrations, group par ticipation, try-it-yourself crafts, group discussion, visual aids, films, observation and individual question and answer periods. The Medford district includes all adult volunteers in the fol lowing schools: Washington, Lin coln, Jackson, Roosevelt, Jeffer son; St. Mary s, McLoughlin and Hedrick Junior High schools; Medford Senior and Crater High schools, Jacksonville, Griffin Creek; Central Point, Phoenix, Shady Cove, Lone Pine, Howard, Oak Grove, Prospect and Gold Hill. There is no training fee for the courses and those wishing further information on each ses sion may call the Girl Scout office, 2-5912. Rogue Valley Area Girl 'Scout council is a member agency of the United Medford crusade which provides funds for a year round adult training program in the Medford district. Griffin Creek Club Takes New Name; Changes Meetings The name and time of meet ings have been changed for the Griffin Creek Mothers club, of ficers announced last week. The group now is known as the Grif fin Creek Community School club and the meetings have been changed from afternoons to eve nings. The sessions will be held the first Monday of each month. Over 100 persons attended the October meeting. Several com ing events were discussed and parents visited teachers of their students. Mrs. Thomas Helman was in troduced as room mother chair man and Mrs. James Walker as publicity chairman. The mothers of seventh and eighth grade students were in charge of refreshments and also did the decorating. Sildehs Leave After Visit Here Mr. and Mrs. Earl Silden, Bev erly Hills, Calif., and Mrs. Ethel G. Silden of Florida, left Thurs day by plane after visiting at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Laurence Buonocore. Mrs. Silden is Mrs. j Buonocore's mother and Mr. i biiaen is a oroiner or Mrs. uuon ocore. The mother had been here throughout the summer months. Mrs. Buonocore recently re turned from a month in Long Island, New York, where she visited a brother-in-law and sis ter, Mr. and Mrs. Sidney G.
