Wisconsin Is Upset by SC Trojans Los Angeles (U.R) The brilliance of halfback Jon Arn ett and the aroused fury of the entire Trojan team Saturday pushed Southern California back into the national gridiron pic ture with an upset win over Wisconsin. The Trojans, behind the whirl ing, side-stepping dashes of Ar nett, defeated the favored Badg ers 32-21 Friday night in memor ial coliseum before 75,162 fans. The last time the teams played SC scored a 7-0 victory in the 1953 Rose Bowl game. Ready for Badgers Only a week ago the Trojans were dumped out of the nation's top 10 ranked teams by a stun ning 7-0 loss to Washington in the rain at Seattle. After four days of the most fierce work outs of the season, coach Jess Hill knew his Trojans were ready for the Badgers. The Trojans won the score board and in statistics, too, with a net yardage of 420 yards run ning and passing to the Badgers 358 and 20 first downs to 16. Arnett came through with an other brilliant individual perfor mance which his supporters claim rate him All-America con sideration. He scored two touch downs, had another TD run call ed back by an SC clipping pen alty, converted twice and was the sparkplug of the arounsed SC team. Arnett netted 134 in 13 carries for a 10.3 yard aver age. Quarterback Jim Haluska was the standout for the Badgers, who led 7-6 at halftime only to be overcome by the Trojans' four-touchdown spree in the second half. Haluska hit on 12 of the 21 passes for 232 yards and one touchdown, a 78-yards pass play to halfback John Bridgeman in the fourth period. Nashua Races To $79,950 Victory New York U.R) Belair Stud's Nashua, after shaking .off a determined challenge by Thinking Cap, won the 36th running of the $79,950 Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park Saturday by five lengths and took over second place on the list of the world's leading money winners. Almost all the way down the backstretch Nashua and Think ing Cap raced as a team. Even their legs were in perfect rhythm until Nashua finally broke the race wide open with a half a mile to go. St. Mary's high of Medford stood only one game away from its second consecutive Jackson County B league football cham pionship Friday after drubbing the Prospect Cougars at Prospect 31 to 6. The Crusaders shoved over two touchdowns each in the first and second quarters for a 25 to 0 half time advantage. They got another TD in the third quarter. Prospect finally made it to the pay zone in the fourth quarter after St. Mary's, had stopped three other Cougar threats. First of the Medford eleven's touchdowns followed a blocked Prospect punt, giving SM the ball on the Cougar 30-yard line. Jim Jones took a hand-off from Laval Meunier to go the last nine yards. A 60-yard march got the next tally with Meunier go ing 15 yards after taking the leather from Ron Pruitt. Interception of a Prospect pass by Meunier set up the third TD. The scatback took a hand from Jones and ran 40 yards to the end zone. Jones passed to Ger ald Darland for the extra. St. Mary's moved 90 yards to the goal after holding Prospect on its 10. A pass, Jones to Dar land picked up 37 yards on the drive. Meunier ran across the final line from 13 yards out but a penalty nullified the jaunt. Then Jones went through center SLP(DLHnrS GP Defeated By Hedrick Fullback Don Cranston scored all four touchdowns yesterday afternoon as the Hedrick jun ior high eighth grade trimmed Grants Pass 27 to 13. Cranston crossed the goal on runs of 35, 30, 25 and 10 yards. Gary McGill tossed to Paul Moore for two extra points and McGill ran over one. Hedrick was on top 14 to 0 at half time. Grants Pass got a TD with a wide sweep in the third period. A fourth stanza tally was put over against Hedrick reserves. Pirie Wins 5,000 Meter Over Zatopek Manchester, England (U.R) Britain's long-striding Gordon Pirie again ran world record holder Emil Zatopek into the ground Saturday, .winning the 5000-meter race in 14:19 at an international meet a g a i ns t Czechoslovakia. It was Pirie's second victory in four days over the balding Czech Army colonel, who first inspired the Briton to take on his treadmill training schedule. On Wednesday, Pirie had beaten Zatopek, at London's White City, setting lip" a new British 10,000 meter record. Use Tribune Want Ads I "AC for 18 and a TD that counted. Prospect got down to the SM four in the final moments of the half and was shoved back to the nine. Dick Paup scored the last touchdown for the Crusaders on a double reverse, skirting right end for 47 yards. The Cougars got down to the St. Mary's 15-yard line in the third quarter after a Crusader fumble had spoiled the break of a pass interception by Bill Carey. A roughing the passer infraction helped out the Prospectors but Cougar aerials were batted down by Paup and Meunier to wreck the efforts. Don Vannice launched the suc cessful Prospect touchdown push by recovering an SM muff on the Crusader 32. Paup inter cepted a Cougar pass on the next play but a shoving penalty on SM nullified the break and put the ball on the 18. Vannice went to the 10 and Darwin Bean ran to .the goal from there. Alson Geren turned in a top performance on offense and d' fense in the line for St. Mary's and Ramon Elberts and Francis Murphy were defensive stal warts. Prospect gave St. Mary's trou ble with an aerial assault but could gain little on the ground, Jim Daniels was a Cougar of fensive standout, catching ' four passes from Don Vannice. Don Burwell made some good tackles from his halfback slot and Line man Jim Martin, hobbled by an injury, did well the times he got into action UCLA Hands Stanford 21-13 Loss Stanford, Calif. U.R) Sam Brown powered heavily-favored UCLA to three touchdowns in the first quarter and then the Bruins hung on to defeat Stan ford, 21-13, in a Pacific Coast conference game Saturday. The first time the Bruins got the ball they marched 65 yards for a touchdown. On that drive Brown carried the ball five times for 56 yards and Fullback Bob Davenport went over from the three. Brown kicked the first of his three conversions. The next time the Bruins got possession, Brown passed 18' yards to End John Smith who raced 41 yards for a touchdown. UCLA marched another 55 yards for a score just before the quarter ended with Doug Brad ley passing to Quarterback Bruce Ballard for the counter to make it 21-0. The Indians' first counter came after a 66-yard march with Fullabck Bill Tarr going around end for the touchdown Stanford scored one more in the third quarter with Halfback Jeri McMillin going around end. Multnomah Club Buys Golf Links For Dog Racing Portland (U.R) Murray Kemp, . president and general manager of the Multnomah Ken nel club, said Saturday the club had an option to purchase the 237-acre site of the former Iver ness Golf club here for use as a new greyhound racing ; plant. Kemp said that unless some more desirable tracts are pre sented, the club would exercise its option and construct a mod ern racing oval on the tract. He said the area would make an ideal site. . "The kennel club hag not pur chased the property as yet, all it has is an option to purchase the tract," Kemp said. . Kemp would not state the op tion price on the property but admitted it was close to $270, 000. The Kennel club last Saturday held its last race at Multnomah stadium where it had operated for 23 years. The Portland Beav ers baseball club will use the stadium next year after abandon ing its aged Vaughn street park. IDAHO STATE VICTOR Pocatello, Idaho (U.R) Idaho State came from behind in the second half Saturday to score a 14-6 win over western Colorado State in a homecoming battle be fore 5,000 fans. Cottage Grove, the seventh- ranked team, fell before Prine ville 26-12 as Coach Keith De Courcey's powerhouse moved an other notch in its quest to regain class A-2 honors. Top-ranked Marshfield was idle but Gresham, Pendleton, Jefferson, Corvallis, and the oth er ranked teams came through. Gresham, ranked second, got by a tough district 3 battle by shading Milwaukie 12-7, scoring twice within four minutes in the second period. Pendleton, the third-ranked team, blanked The Dalles 13-0 in a district 7 game. Corvallis, tied with' Jeff erson of Portland for fourth, came through as expected with a 32 14 win over Springfield in a non-league encounter. Jefferson had to score in the last five seconds to defeat Lin coln 18-13 and keep atop in the Portland prep circuit. Washing ton remained in second place with a 19-7 win over Roosevelt. Salem Roars Sixth-ranked South Salem, re bounding from a 7-0 upset by Eugene crushed Lebanon 53-0 in a district 8 game. Eugene, incidentally, came through for the second week in a row, this time 7-0 over Albany. Hillsboro, eighth-ranked, got by a big district 4 contest by blanking Beaverton 12-0; Cen tral Catholic, rated ninth, blast ed Parkrose 32-2 and Vale, an A-2 team rated 10th, smashed Meridan, Ida., 34-7. Grants Pass, the favorite in district 6, walloped Ashland 38 14, while Medford and Klamath Falls battled to a 13-13 tie. In other top games, Bend pull ed out with a 7-0 win over North Salem in a district 6 fray; La Grande shaded Mac-Hi 14-13 in district 7, and Astoria got by Tillamook 13-0. McMinnville downed West Linn 19-7 and Ore gon City pasted Newberg 35-19 in district 4 games. Two other A-2 powers, St. Helens and Ontario, posted im pressive wins. St. Helens took Hood River 32-13 and Ontario walloped Nyssa 52-14. Klamath Nudges Tornado Harriers Klamath Falls edged Medford high 37 to 41 Friday in a cross country race prior to the foot ball game at Klamath. Wilcie Winchell and Les Ling scheit placed first and second for Medford but the Pelicans grabbed off third,' fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh spots in the VA. Winchell ran a fine race for the Tornado, clipping off the distance in 6:54 without tiring and leading Lingscheit to the finish by 110 yards. Lingscheit led the nearest Klamath rival by 60 yards. Six places counted in the run. Placers for Medford included Jay Mullen eighth, Jim Benson ninth, Wayne Breeze 10th and Br.uce Boldenow 11th. NOTHING SERIOUS Milwaukee (U.R) A doc tor reported that there is "noth ing seriously wrong" with Eddie Mathews, ' Milwaukee Braves third' baseman who entered a local Jiospital Thursday com plaining of pains in the back. (U.R) Michigan State's Clarence Peaks, Gerry Planutis and Earl Morrall punched through the Notre Dame line for touchdowns Saturday to produce a 21-7 victory with the first points scored against the Irish this year. The win, knocking the Irish out of the undefeated class this year broke a Notre Dame win- Cougars In 9-0 Victory Over Idaho Moscow, Idaho U.R) Quar terback Frank Sarno kicked a first half field goal and then en gineered a second half touch down Saturday as Washington State college rolled to a 9-0 vic tory over archrival Idaho in a Pacific Coast conference game. Sarno, starting for injured Quarterback Bob Iversdn, led a powerful attack sparked by his passing to End Pete Toomey and the long run of Sophomore Rey Alvarado. Sarno's field goal came early in the second period after Idaho, on the attack during most of the first half, was stalled by a 53- yard quick kick by Fullback Oill Kramer. Washington State launched its touchdown drive after taking an Idaho punt on its own 22. Bill Steiger scored the touchdown on a three yard run abound right end. Sarno attempted the conver sion but it was blocked. Mac Eighth Nudges CP A hard-tackling, hard-blocking McLoughlin junior high eighth grade football crew nicked Cen tral Point 6 to 0 Saturday mor ning in a tussle here. Skippy Bennett got the lone score of the mix on a quickie in the first quarter. His mates op ened a big hole and went over from the five-yard line to con clude a 40-yard surge. Central Point threatened near the end of the game with a pass interception. However, a clip ping penalty on the play put the Pointers on about. the Bulldog 30. Ken Durkee then intercept ed a Pointer pass to prevent a score. Coach Bob Williams said his Medford club both tackled and blocked hard, in general, during the encounter. Gavilan, Lausse Bout Plans Underway Buenos Aires (U.R) Negotia tions are underway to stage a third fight between Kid Gavilan and Eduardo "K.O." Lausse. Three years ago, when Gavi lan was the welterweight world champion he won a decision from Lausse in Buenos Aires, but the result was reversed here last month in their return bout. (U.R) Duke Snider of the Brooklyn Dodgers was named the outstanding play er i in the National League and Al Kaline of th Dtroit Tigers won similar honors in the Amer ican League in the annual poll of the Sporting News. The national baseball weekly also announced the choice of Rob in Roberts of the Philadelphia Phillies as the National League's top pitcher and the selection of Whitey Ford of the New York Yankees as the American Leag ue's best. The players are chosen on the basis of votes of managers, play ers, umpires and correspondents of the Sporting News. American Wins Weight Event Munich, Germany (U.R) Pete George of Akron, Ohio, won the United States' first gold medal in the world weight lift ing championships Saturday when he lifted a total of 405 kilograms (891 pounds) for the middleweight title. Fedor Bogdanovskl of Russia also hoisted 405 kilograms, but George was awarded the cham pionship because he weighed less than his rival. George's weight was .162 pounds and Bog-danovski's-164V. The Whites of McLoughlin whipped the Reds of Hedrick 20 to 0 and fhe Blacks of the west side school turned back the Blues of Hedrick 19 to 0. Bob Quinney, Mike Hood and Richard Connelly, carried over touchdowns for the Whites and Hood and Connelljr -' collected extra points. For the Blacks Al bert Minnick' got one score on a line play and Larry Hammack gathered in two passes from Dick Ragsdale for ' TDs. Minnick bucked for one extra point. - MICHIGAN WINS Ann Arbor, Mich.
