Is Upset by
SC Trojans
Los Angeles (U.R) The
brilliance of halfback Jon Arn
ett and the aroused fury of the
entire Trojan team Saturday
pushed Southern California back
into the national gridiron pic
ture with an upset win over
Wisconsin.
The Trojans, behind the whirl
ing, side-stepping dashes of Ar
nett, defeated the favored Badg
ers 32-21 Friday night in memor
ial coliseum before 75,162 fans.
The last time the teams played
SC scored a 7-0 victory in the
1953 Rose Bowl game.
Ready for Badgers
Only a week ago the Trojans
were dumped out of the nation's
top 10 ranked teams by a stun
ning 7-0 loss to Washington in
the rain at Seattle. After four
days of the most fierce work
outs of the season, coach Jess
Hill knew his Trojans were
ready for the Badgers.
The Trojans won the score
board and in statistics, too, with
a net yardage of 420 yards run
ning and passing to the Badgers
358 and 20 first downs to 16.
Arnett came through with an
other brilliant individual perfor
mance which his supporters
claim rate him All-America con
sideration. He scored two touch
downs, had another TD run call
ed back by an SC clipping pen
alty, converted twice and was
the sparkplug of the arounsed
SC team. Arnett netted 134 in
13 carries for a 10.3 yard aver
age. Quarterback Jim Haluska was
the standout for the Badgers,
who led 7-6 at halftime only to
be overcome by the Trojans'
four-touchdown spree in the
second half. Haluska hit on 12
of the 21 passes for 232 yards
and one touchdown, a 78-yards
pass play to halfback John
Bridgeman in the fourth period.

St. Mary's high of Medford
stood only one game away from

The Crusaders shoved over

another TD in the third quarter.
Prospect finally made it to the
pay zone in the fourth quarter
after St. Mary's, had stopped
three other Cougar threats.
First of the Medford eleven's
touchdowns followed a blocked
Prospect punt, giving SM the
ball on the Cougar 30-yard line.
Jim Jones took a hand-off from
Laval Meunier to go the last
nine yards. A 60-yard march got
the next tally with Meunier go

leather from Ron Pruitt.
Interception of a Prospect pass
by Meunier set up the third TD.
The scatback took a hand from
Jones and ran 40 yards to the
end zone. Jones passed to Ger

St. Mary's moved 90 yards to
the goal after holding Prospect

Prospect got down to the SM
four in the final moments of the
half and was shoved back to the
nine.
Dick Paup scored the last
touchdown for the Crusaders on
a double reverse, skirting right
end for 47 yards.
The Cougars got down to the
St. Mary's 15-yard line in the
third quarter after a Crusader
fumble had spoiled the break of
a pass interception by Bill Carey.
A roughing the passer infraction
helped out the Prospectors but
Cougar aerials were batted down
by Paup and Meunier to wreck
the efforts.
Don Vannice launched the suc
cessful Prospect touchdown push
by recovering an SM muff on
the Crusader 32. Paup inter

play but a shoving penalty on
SM nullified the break and put
the ball on the 18. Vannice went
