ROGUE RIVER School Test Program Held Rogue River Mrs. B. Kearns, lirst grade teacher in Rogue River school, was chosen as the school's representative to admin ister a testing program sponsored by a company's research depart ment, designed to survey arith metic meaning comprehension pupils. Norms will be derived through results of the nation wide programs. All Jackson county second and third grades participated. The Otis quick scoring mental maturity test was also given by Mrs. Kearns. Both- tests were completed in 2Vi days and were conducted on a time schedule. More than 100 students took the tests and the final scores will be sent in by Oct. 21. ' This is the third time the com pany has asked Jackson county to cooperate in establishing na tion-wide test standards. John B. Harr were in Med ford last week for a conference James Dean Death Ruled Accidental Paso Robles, Calif. U.R) A coroner's jury has ruled that the death of actor James Dean in oan auto crash was accidental. Dean, 24, was killed Sept. 30 when his $7000 German sports - car smashed into an auto driven by Harold Turnupseed, 24, on a highway near Paso Robles. Tur nupseed suffered minor injuries and Dean's companion, mechan ic Rolf Weutherich, was injured seriously. Highway Patrolman Ernest Tripke testified before the jury yesterday that the color of Dean's silver-gray auto blended with the dusk and roadside ter rain 'and apparently was diffi cult to see. Attorney Peter Andre, repre senting Turnupseed, said that his client did not see Dean's auto when he made a right turn onto the highway and into the path of the speeding sportscar. According to Harr, the music department here is now organized on a working schedule after getting off to a slow start due to a large num ber of the lead band players being on the football team. The popular high school band made its first appearance at the Homecoming game last Friday night when 'the Chiefs won over Jacksonville at Rogue River. A game is booked for Oct. 14 at Phoenix. The next home game will be with Illinois Valley, Nov. 11 in the afternoon. Mrs. Reed Carter substituted for Mrs.- James Beck, first grade teacher,, and Mrs. A. P. Klom haus for Mrs. Eugen Coda, fourth grade teacher, last Thursday. Mrs. C. A. Weston of Pleasant Creek assisted with arrange ments at a dinner honoring the past high priests of Royal Arch Masons held in the Masonic tem ple in Grants Pass Oct. 6. Guest entertainers were Mrs. Clint Hawkins Jr., soloist, who pre sented a group of three songs, and students of the Esther Mars Dance studio. Mrs. Hawkins was accompanied by Miss Marilyn Smith, pianist. Mrs. Ted Hopkins, department president of Veterans of Foreign Wars auxiliary, returned Mon day from Kansas City, Mo., where she attended a meeting Oct. 6, 7 and 8, called by the national VFW auxiliary presi dent. According to Mayor Phil En gle, the city council is still seek ing "room and board" for any persons needing jail service from Rogue River. Councilmen Harold Saunders and Robert deArmond were appointed to look into the possibility of securing the use of Jackson county jail, after being turned down by Josephine coun ty. The cityis share of the Booster club-sponsored . dances , in the park was $800. New stop signs have been installed at Oak and First sts. and at Third and Broad way. The regular meeting of the city council is the first Tuesday in each month. Seizure Order Ends St. Louis Bus Strike St. Louis (U.R) Strike leaders bowed to a state seizure order and promised they would get St. Louis' buses and street cars rolling again today. The grudging agreement end ed a day-and-a-half transporta tion paralysis for the 250,000 persons who depend on public transit in the area. Arthur E. East, president of the AFL Transit Union, said the strikers were complying "under protest" to Gov. Phil M. Don nelly's seizure order. He also served notice that they will challenge the validity of the state seizure law. But, acting as "law-abiding citizens," East and other union leaders called a mass meeting to issue the back-to-work order. Oregon State College Willed Student Fund Corvallis -4U.R) Mrs. Nellie A. Shaver of Portland has pre sented Oregon State college with 520,000 to be loaned to students in financial need who want to continue their education. College President Dr. A. L. Strand said the fund was made in the memory of Mrs. Shaver's husband, Capt. Delmer Shaver, and her son, James, who was drowned in 1926 while a senior in logging engineering at OSC.
