SIXTEEN MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Wednesday, October 12, 1955 two Air Force Officers Will Make Record Jumps Washington Two Air Force officers are planning to test air craft escape equipment soon in one of the most daring research projects in aviation history. Scientists are now trying to develop a stabilized seat that can "be ejected from high-flying jet planes. To do this they need to know the answer to a vital ouestion: How far can man safe ly drop through rarefied air be fore-he opens his paracnute; To help get the answer Capt, Edward G. Sperry and 1st Lt Henry P. Nielsen are preparing iumns from perhaps record hpizhts. Allan C Fisher Jr., points out. Six Balloon Flights In an article entitled "Avia tion Medicine on the Threshold of Space? Fisher writes that -the officers are getting set for ..Kiv halloon fliehts ranging up , to 90,000 feet the highest alti tude yet attained by man or possibly even farther. At the peak of each ascent , one of the men will jump. Warm clothing and a pressure suit will protect him against the -thin subzero atmosphere. His parachute will open in the safe - lower layers of air. Meanwhile the other partner, cutting the balloon adrift, will ride the gondola, guided by a " small stabilizing parachute, down to an altitude of about 20,000 feet. Then he, too, will bail out. A special parachute will ease gondola and instru ments to earth. Q The gondola has been named Explorer HI in honor of the balloon Explorer II which set a 72,239-foot record in 1935 dur ing an ascent sponsored by the National Geographic 1 Society and the Army Air' Corps. Sperry and Nielsen intend to take off at Holloman Air Force Base, N. Mex. They already jointly hold the world's altitude record for ejection, 45,200 feet. Service doctors face other problems: the effect of cosmic rays upon tissue, high-intensity noise, design of oxygen equip ment and pressure suits, and "ss the phenomenon of weigh tless 3 ness that shows up when gravity balances centrifugal , force as a pilot flies a high-speed arc. Lt. Col. John P. Stapp, one such Air Force physician, has risked his. life repeatedly , to study the effects of rapid hum an deceleration. Peron Interned In Central Paraguay Asuncion, Para'guay (U.R) The Asuncion government today ordered ousted Argentine dicta tor Juan D. Peron -interned in the city of Villa Rica in Central Paraguay. Peron has been living in Asun cion, just across tne .Paraguay river from Argentina, since he fled into exile Oct. 2. But, after he gave an exclu sive interview to the United Press in which he asserted he still was constitutional President of Argentina, the Buenos Aires gov ernment demanded that he be sent outside the American conti nent. However, Paraguay said what it did with a refugee to which it had granted political asylum was its business. Accepting this view, Argen tina then asked yesterday that Peron be interned at a "consid erable distance from the border" between the two countries. The new layer of oil-bearing sand was found some 100 to 120 feet below the first strike. It was not known whether the two deposits were connected. Drilling continued throughout last week to find out what lay below the first oil bearing sta tum discovered at the end of Sep tember. A few days ago instru ments indicated another layer of oil bearing sand had been readied. Tammany Leader Heads for West Coast New York (U.R) Tammany Hall Democratic leader Carmine de Sapio left today for San Fran cisco in a flurry of political speculation that he's off to line up West Coast support for the presidential aspirations of New York Gov. Averell Harriman. De Sapio was scheduled to speak tonight at non-political Columbus Day dinner in San Francisco but said it was "only natural" . that politics would be discussed in his meetings with West Coast Democratics leaders. "In these discussions I will not say anything which, even by inference, could be construed as discrediting any possible can didate," he said.' De Sapio said he was not op posed to the Democratic presi dential nomination going to Adlai E. Stevenson or any other candidate but emphasized it is not possible to tell now which candidate will be the strongest at convention time. PLANE ACCIDENT Rockland, Me. (U.R) Po lice here investigated what they said was a hit-and-run accident involving a seaplane and, ap parently, a boat trailer. Hugo Lehtinen left his seaplane pull ed up on the beach and returned to find a hole punched in t h e side. Police said there were in dications someone hauling a boat in a trailer along the beach side swiped the plane. The Legion's mammoth annual parade was delayed four hours at Miami yesterday when rain came rolling in off the ocean.
