G o TE HTOrORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE , WednMday, October 12, 195S G Flammable Liquids Among Dangerous Haxards in Homes One of the most dangerous fire hazards in the home is flam mable liquids, which last year caused more than 40,000 build ing fires costing several hundred lives and almost $40,000,000 in property damages throughout the country. Chief Urgei Check As part of National Fire Pre- vention week, Medford Fire Chief Gordon Barker has urged residents to check residences and other establishments for flammable liquids - cleaning fluids, paint thinners, varnish removers, gasoline, kerosene and kitchen grease. Such fiery liquids as gasoline kerosene and flammable clean- in s! fluids should be kept in tightly closed metal containers which have labels indicating the contents have been approved by nationally recognized testing agency, Barker pointed out These containers should not be placed near stairways, in small closets or near heating appli ances, he pointed out. People who do their own dry cleaning should make sure of proper ventilations in the house if it cannot be done outside. Barker reminded residents who use dry cleaning fluid to give clothes dry cleaned a good air ing before putting them away, Rags Dangerous -Rags soaked with furniture polish, paint, turpentine or oth er oily substances should be dis carded right after use, Barker said, but if such rags are kept they should be' placed in a tight ly covered metal container such as an old coffee can. Barker noted that many peo ple do not recognize serious fire hazards such as flammable liq uids, and urged residents to use care, not only during National Fire Prevention week, but throughout the year, in handling flammable liquids. Two Youths Arrested After Hubcaps Stolen Two youths were arrested by Medford police late last night in connection with the theft of hubcaps from parked vehicles. The boys later were released to their parents. Police said the youths, 15 and 16 -years old, admitted taking hubcaps from cars parked in the Southern Pacific freight depot parking lot and from a car parked on North Central ave. Congress Lauded For Legislation On Racketeering Las Vegas (U.R) The Am erican Mining Congress today sought a revision of general min ing laws to provide a "reason able period of protection" for anyone making discoveries. The congress, meeting here in convention, adopted a resolution lauding Congress for legislation which prevented land racketeer ing through filing of mining claims "in bad faith." At the same time, the AMC urged that, because of increased reliance on expensive, modern equipmnt for prospecting, laws be revised to give the "reasonable period of protection" after the discov ery is made." The AMC also lauded the op ening of vast new areas for ex ploration which previously were closed. The congress, how ever, announced its opposition to granting states any rights in public domain lands which in terfere with mining. It also op posed extension of the Lasing act system to minerals and met als. Other resolutions adopted yes terday by the AMC called for: Liberalization of qualifications necessary for "worthy" mining enterprises to get loans from the government's Small Business Administration. Reconsideration by Congress of the securities and exchange laws, rules and regulations to correct obstructive and unnec essary features." Search was underway today for Leroy Condray, 32-year-old Portlander who was reported missing after going on a prospecting trip in Clackamas county Sunday. Deputy Sheriff Thomas Cuts forth said Condray's car was found locked and parked on the Forsythe road near Carver. BEND WOMAN, 100, DIES Bend (U.R) Funeral services were held here yesterday for Bend's oldest resident, Martha Lovina Davis. She died this past week end at the age of 100. Rapp, Klamath Falls, was hospitalized over night at Community hospital following a one-vehicle accident at about 4:20 p.m. yesterday on the Jacksonville-Central Point highway, according to state po lice., Rapp was the driver of a lumber truck which overturned when the load shifted, police said. He was taken to the hospit al by Medford Ambulance ser vice. ' 1Sjf The truck,- owned by Clinton Phelps, 1337 South Peach st., received some damage, accord ing to investigating officers. It was towed away. In another accident, cars driv en by Jack E. Forde, 49, of 506 Haven st., and Francis A. Sut cliffe, 54, of route 1, box 378, Gold Hill, were involved in a collision on Highway 99 north of Rock Point bright at about 10:10 a.m. yesterday. Sutcliffe was cited for failure' to operate a motor vehicle on the proper side of the highway, according to police. There wnre no in juries.
