October 7, 1955 Red Raiders To Take On EOC Gridders Ashland Southern Oregon college's grid squad is expected to be at full strength this week end. ind there's every indication the Red Raiders willkave to be. Their fourth conflict of the ' season takes them to LaGrande on Saturday to tackle the East ern Oregon college Mountain eers, a club which spilled Ore gon Technical Institute 27 to 6 last week. SOC's passing showed need of further labor last Saturday when the Raiders bounced Portland State 20 to 6. So that depart ment has got considerable at tention in this week's practices Coach Al Akins has reported Halfback Ten Tenney back with the squad. Tenney, out of ac tion last week end because of a bad ankle sprain, should see duty but he's not slated to start. A 1954 hand of the Raiders moved back into his old place. Herb Cplley, ex-Central Point high player, reportedly has re gained his starting tackle spot. He was a late returnee to the SOC squad this falL Starters Listed At the other tackle Saturday will likely be Al Sodaro, who drew praisfrom Akins after the Portland State mix for turning in his finest game of the year. Possible starting ends against the Mounties are Hank Smith and Walt McCoy while Chuck Romine and Don Dickson may be at guards and Chuck Quin owski at center. Bill Seymour probably will be at quarterback, Ralph Clarflo at left half, Bill Rush at right haf and Don Korns at fullback. The Raiders will be up against plenty of ball club. ' Assistant Coach Ted Schopf, who scouted the Mountaineers at .Klamath Falls, brought back reports that EOC could have won by an even bigger margin. ' Top back of the Eastern Ore gon club is Bill West, a first string linebacker, for Oregon State college before entering mil itary service. He was a star at LaGrande in high school. A pair of scatbacks are Dick Quinn and Terry Zeiganhagen. Oregon Staters Take On UCLA Bruins This Evening Los Angeles U.R) UCLA, a four touchdown favorite, meets Oregon State in Memorial Coli seum tonight as Bruin : Coach Henry Red Sanders gets a first hand chance to find out how well a former pupil learned his lessons. conference records. .' .In the other OCC contest scheduled, Portland State trav els to' Monmouth to play Oregon college, defending co-champions of the league. The other cochamp, Oregon Tech, is scheduled to meet Compton Junior college of southern California, a highly touted squad. ; SOC, which knocked over Portland State, will have Ted Tenney, star halfback, back in uniform for the EOC contest. Easter Oregon has been strength ened by the return of Bill West, its big fullback. A crowd of about 40,000 is ex pected to attend the Pacific Coast Conference clash. Oregon State Coach Tommy Prothro was an assistant coach to Sanders for nine years,-six at UCLA and three at Vanderbilt Sanders also was Prothro's coach when Tommy attended Riverside Military Academy. The unbeaten Beavers boast a 10-0 upset , win ' over Stanford which stamps them potentially as a danger to UCLA, winner over Texas A&M and Washing ton State but loser to Maryland. The oddsmakers however, be lieve Sanders single wing packs too much, speed, power and bench depth to be stymied by Oregon State. Almost Same Squad ; ,' . Prothro has substantially the same, Oregon State squad which suffered a 61-0 loss to UCLA last year. Key positions are 145 pound Sam Wesley, a sophomore : From Central and Jackson To' RIVERSIDE & STEWART H'mro IjnniprovDirDg UNION'S NEW SUPER SERVICE STATION union ' AL CLAUSE Your Friendly Union Oil Dealer See Me at My New Location - Fri., Oct." 7-Riverside at Stewart "We're ready" was the main statement from each school as Medford and Crater high grid ders awaited tonight's 8 o'clock kick-off at the local stadium for their third annual fracas. Coach Fred Spiegelberg of the Black "Tornado elaborated little beyond those two words. But he did add, "We'll be out there." At Central Point, where the picture was mighty dreary after Wednesday night's workout, Crater Coach Leonard Warren reported, "The boys are more ready than I thought they were. They might do something after all." Hope for the Comets to give a favored Medford aggregation a rugged scuffle stemmed from more fire and more life shown in Thursday afternoon's drill. The Comets had been sluggish and spiritless in their Wednes day practice. Near Full Strength Both clubs will be at near full strength for their engagement Tornado players sidelined are Tackles Rodney Hammer and Mel Morgan and End Ed Reink- mg. The two tackles have broken hands in hard casts and Reink ing has a broken bone in his foot. Hammer's injury came early in the season. Morgan was hurt a week ago Thursday and missed the Milwukie game but his in jury somehow has previously escaped mention. Mel has been a first call defensive lineman. His spot likely will be filled by Larry Cranston tonight. Reink- ing was crippled in practice this week. Halfback Jack Lilly is -the principal Comet hobbled. He was banged up in practice Wednes day and his hip is troubling him the most. Lilly likely will see limited service with Bob Mason likely getting the starting offen sive call in his position. Duane Krout figures as defensive half. Mason is a linebacker. Medford and Crater both took it light last night. The Comets worked over some defensive switches and worked on offen sive signal drill with the idea of improving the elements of faking ana speed. The Comets will place a split T attack against Medford's com bined T and single wing offen sive. Concentration in both camps this week has been on sharpening, those offenses. The result could be a wide open con test unless a Medford objective is achieved. Tornado players hope to grab possession -of the ball as often as possible and make their offensive move suf ficiently to have control of the pigskin most of the time. Tonight's affair., is sort of a rubber game. The Comets won the first meeting -two seasons back and Medford was victor last year. Crater is still an A-2 school while Medford is in A-l class. Therefore prestige rather than any conference or district honors are ' at stake. However, the Comets appear almost cer tain to join Medford, Ashland, Grants Pass and Klamath Falls in the A-l category next year. The battle is also the fifth this year for each club. Medford has a 12 to 6 nod over Cleveland of Portland, a 13 to 0 loss to Gres ham, a 14 to 6 win over Rose burg and a 7 to 7 tie with- MiL waukie behind it. Crater whip ped Glendale 32 to 0, lost to Yreka, Calif., 13 to 12, beat Redmond 32 to 20 and lost to Phoenix 30 to 7. The game will be.the last for Medford before meeting con ference opponents. ' Maryland held the Bruins to a minus 21 yards net from ground plays but Sanders' club finally got rolling last week in its 55-0 rout of Washington State. Fullback Bob Davenport, tail back Sam Brown and wingback Chuck Hollaway all piled up big chunks of yardage in the victory. Brown starts again at tailback for UCLA, but the injured Ron nie Knox is expected to get into the game for some action. Knox bruised a shoulder in the Mary land loss. TORNADO BACK Dave Bos worth, above, offensive fullback and defensive halfback, is among the Black Tornado players who will mix with Crater high at 8 o'clock tonight at the Medford field. Bosworth lettered as a sophomore but an auto accident sidelined him just before the season started in 1954. (Landis-Shangle photo). McLoughlin Plays Crater On Saturday McLoughlin junior high ninth grade has its first full-fledged ruckus, of the season Saturday. The Bulldogs take on Crater at the Medford gridiron at 1:30 p.m. Coaches- Mel ;Boldenow and Bill Shepherd have placed heavy stress on fundamentals in drills' so ' far this season Saturday's hassle will be first regulation game in which the mentors can see how well the training has paid off. A practice scrimmage last week, in which McLoughlin edged Hedrick 13 to 0, gave the coaches their first look 'at their club ' in action against another team). Since then much work has been aimed at perfecting blocking in the line. Head man Boldenow has indi cated possible starters ' in the line as Bob Plankenhorn and Bob Greier, ends; Donald- Mann and Jim Fontaine, tackles; Doug Meier and Warren Chick, guards, and Dennis Barr, center. In the backfield it may be Fred Funs ton, quarterback; Bill Wallace, left half; John'Conley, right half, and Gerry Lyons, fullback. Since Medford junior high tal ent' is split between two schools, McLoughlin and Hedrick, for the first time this year, fans are in terested in seeing .how well the two clubs stand up against out side opposition in comparison to previous years when all the play ers were combined into one squad. Hedrick played Grants Pass here this afternoon. Tommy Jackson Faces Rex Layne Detroit (U.R) Tommy (Hurri cane) Jackson, a perpetual mo tion pugilist ranked number three contender for heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano's ti tle, paused briefly between calis thenics and said he wouldn't pre dict the outcome of .his nation ally televised fight tonight with Rex Layne. Sweat streaming from his 192- pound frame as he pumped to and fro doing sirups, Jackson said only that he was in "good condition and ready" for Layne, a ponderous Utah farmer rated 10th among challengers for Mar ciano's crown. .-. Although old Archie was knocked out in the ninth round on Sept. 21 by Marciano, "the fighter of the month," his great stand against the unbeaten champion kopt him atop the con tenders heap. Big Bob Baker and Tommy (Hurricane) . Jackson remained at number two and number three respectively; but ' Nino Valdes of Cuba rose from sev enth rung and replaced Don Cockell of England to fourth position because of his kayo over Cockell. Moore, Baker, Jackson and Valdes are the "big four" pro posed by promoter Jim Norris for a contenders elimination tournament.
