FOURTEEN MEDrORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE THurtaiy, October 6. 1955 SPORTS Collegiate Gainers Led By Benham New York (U.R) Little Claude Benham of Columbia, who ran and passed for a total of 239 yards in the Lion' 20-7 loss to Princeton last Saturday, it the nation's total offense and forward passing leader. Benham, who stands five-eight and weighs only 160 pounds, leads the nation's major college footballers with 397 yards gain ed on 69 plays. And his 59 pass attempts and 27 completions also are high for the season thus far, according toofficial NCAA Ser vice Bureau statistics released today.' All this he has accomplished in only two games, while most of his rivals have played three games. Georgia's Dick Young is the runner-up in total yards with 268 in three games, and Bill Bea gle of Dartmouth is one behind Benham in pass completions in the tossing competition. On top of his sterling per formances to date, Benham has proved to be quite durable, much like Davey O'Brien, another small man who passed and ran to fame with Texas Christian 16 years ago. O'Brien set the mod ern record for attacking stam lna, averaging 40 rushes or pass es per game and Benham is just ones behind that mark with 79 attempts. Art Luppino of Arizona, who rever passes, has reclaimed the rushing leadership he held all but one week last year. In three games he has netted 361 yards, picking up 129 yards, last Satur day in 16 trys against Idaho. Jim Swink of Texas Christian, last week's leader, is second this week with 345 yards. Joe Clements of Texas, last week's total offense and passing leader, has tumbled all the way to seventh and fifth, respective ly. Clements, who suffered a head injury, was sidelined last Friday after only two plays against Southern California. Fullback Bill Tarr ofStanford Is third in rushing with 289 yards, while Frank Pajaczkowski of Richmond, is the most pro ficient carrier, having picked up ? T 1 v3ri4e in nnl.r ) tmrp Nick Consoles of Wake Forest, the nation's third top passer, re mains the lone player to pass 30 oi more times without an inter ception. He has hit on 25" of 40 attempts. . That's the advice, Zelma Reig- le, consumer education specialist at Oregon State college, gave this week to sportsman who are taking advantage of open season on buck, October 1 to 14. First, says Miss Reigle, the deer should be properly dressed and taken care of in the woods by the hunter. Make sure it is well-bled and that the carcass is cooled. Then it should be kept as clean and cool as possible until it's in the locker. "Some hunters like to butcher a deer themselves, says Miss Reigle. "It is usually best, .how ever, to have a locker plant do the job because it requires some professional skill." For freezing, package cut-up pieces in moisture - proof paper and freeze quickly at zero de grees fahrenheit or lower. Regular methods of meat cookery apply to venison.
