By Benham
New York (U.R) Little
Claude Benham of Columbia,
who ran and passed for a total
of 239 yards in the Lion' 20-7
loss to Princeton last Saturday,
it the nation's total offense and
forward passing leader.
Benham, who stands five-eight
and weighs only 160 pounds,
leads the nation's major college
footballers with 397 yards gain
ed on 69 plays. And his 59 pass
attempts and 27 completions also
are high for the season thus far,
according toofficial NCAA Ser
vice Bureau statistics released
today.'
All this he has accomplished in
only two games, while most of
his rivals have played three
games. Georgia's Dick Young is
the runner-up in total yards with
268 in three games, and Bill Bea
gle of Dartmouth is one behind
Benham in pass completions in
the tossing competition.
On top of his sterling per
formances to date, Benham has
proved to be quite durable, much
like Davey O'Brien, another
small man who passed and ran
to fame with Texas Christian 16
years ago. O'Brien set the mod
ern record for attacking stam
lna, averaging 40 rushes or pass
es per game and Benham is just
ones behind that mark with 79
attempts.
Art Luppino of Arizona, who
rever passes, has reclaimed the
rushing leadership he held all
but one week last year. In three
games he has netted 361 yards,
picking up 129 yards, last Satur
day in 16 trys against Idaho. Jim
Swink of Texas Christian, last
week's leader, is second this
week with 345 yards.
Joe Clements of Texas, last
week's total offense and passing
leader, has tumbled all the way
to seventh and fifth, respective
ly. Clements, who suffered a
head injury, was sidelined last
Friday after only two plays
against Southern California.
Fullback Bill Tarr ofStanford
Is third in rushing with 289
yards, while Frank Pajaczkowski
of Richmond, is the most pro
ficient carrier, having picked up

Nick Consoles of Wake Forest,

KILLS YANKEE THREAT Sandy Amoros makes one of the most important defensive
plays of the Series as he makes spectacular running catch of Yogi Berra's long fly
along the leftfield foul line. Amoros then fired to Pee Wee Reese, who relayed to Gil
Hodges to double up Gil McDougald at first, with Billy Martin holding at second. Reese
tossed out the next Yankee batter, Hank Bauer. The Dodgers won, 2-0, taking their first
world championship.

Oregon State College, Corval
lis As soon as you've killed
your deer, hunters, start to take
care of it!
That's the advice, Zelma Reig-
le, consumer education specialist
at Oregon State college, gave
this week to sportsman who are
taking advantage of open season
on buck, October 1 to 14.
First, says Miss Reigle, the
deer should be properly dressed
and taken care of in the woods
by the hunter. Make sure it is
well-bled and that the carcass
is cooled. Then it should be kept
as clean and cool as possible
until it's in the locker.
"Some hunters like to butcher
a deer themselves, says Miss
Reigle. "It is usually best, .how
ever, to have a locker plant do
the job because it requires some
professional skill."
For freezing, package cut-up
pieces in moisture - proof paper
and freeze quickly at zero de
grees fahrenheit or lower.

..Pullman, Wash. U.R) First
string quarterback Bob Iverson
of the Washington State Cougars
reported for action to Coach Al
Kircher yesterday, but lineman
Tom Gunnari was taken to the
sidelines. Iverson has apparent
ly recovered from a braih con
cussion uffered against Kansas
two weeks ago. Gunnari suffered
a "hip pointer" in yesterday's
stiff offensive and . defensive
scrimmage as the Cougars pre
pared for their game with the
California Golden Bears.

the meat and then the pan is
covered. Meat is simmered un
til tender. All venison from old
er animals may need this type
of cooking. Tender meat is cook
ed with dry heat at a low temp
erature. No moisture should be
added if even . browning is de
sired," Miss Reigle emphasized.
For roasting, the oven should
be heated to 300-350 degrees fah
renheit. Roast 25 to 30 minutes
per pound. If the meat has been
frozen, longer cooking time is
needed.

To Get Card Job
Seattle '(U.R) Fred Hutchin

the new manager of the St. Louis
Cardinals of the National

In a front page story, Royal

Frank Lane, former general
manager of the Chicago White
Sox, who is slated to take over
as general manager of the Car
dinals today.
Dewey Soriano, general man
ager of the Seattle club, declined
to discuss the matter.
St. Louis, Mo. (U.R) Frank
Lane apparently is the St. Louis

in every respect but one one
his , name on the dotted line
and that was expected today.
"All points seem mutually
satisfactory," he announced aft
er conferring- Wednesday with
August A. Busch Jr., president
