There is almost no such thing as accident proneness, C. R. De Reamer insisted when he and other safety experts got to gether this week at a conference for safer living. cased on Studies DeReamer based his state ments on studies as he has made of accident statistics as the safe ty consultant for the General Electric co. He showed how they applied to home-owners be cause at the conference, sponsor ed by the American Mutual Li ability Insurance company, a survey showed that five-million accidents occur each year .in American homes now, and if the present rate of increase contin ues, the figure will reach seven- million by 1975. All the talk about accident prone people has a bad effect on parents," DeReamer said. If one member of the familv begins having repeated accidents a parent who believes in the theory of accident proneness will feel there is nothine he can ao anout it. He will regard it as a prooiem for a psychologist. "Accidents don't 'just happen' in most cases. They are caused. And they are caused by unsafe acts and unsafe conditions. It is up to parents to accept this bas ic philosophy and then take in dividual responsibility for de veloping what I call "accident awareness' in children." Hopes for Program DeReamer hopes there will be a concentrated program across the nation to urge parent to hold regular family safety ses sions. At' these the family could discuss such things as what to do in case of fire, the danger of falling downstairs (one of the most common household acci dents) how to avoid it, and the danger of using a knife improp erly and how to avoid it. "The home is a safer place to be than it was 50 years ago, be cause competition forces home equipment manufacturers to make it safe," he said. "Now it is up to the parents."
