They have all of the finish and ex pert attention to stresses and strains that appeal to archery enthusiasts. . . Regner Rehn has been follow ing this hobby for the past 15 years up in Alaska and in the state of Washington where he learned the craft while attached to a CCC camp there. His in structor was Fred Powers, who was a teacher at Central Point before he moved north. Rehn is an example of what the almost forgotten Civilian Conservation Corps did for the young men who became pre pared for the war years to fol low and the arts of peace and contentment afterward. The wooVj required for the best bows is either yew or lemon, he says But a strong bow is made from a special laminated product. The ancient "triple" bow, giving power, is one of the styles he makes. Children Suffer Stomach Ulcers Bismarck, N. D. (U.R) A Bis marck .pediatrician says that many children, like their wor ried elders, suffer from stomach ulcers. , Dr. Robert B. Tudor said "one reason doctors have been slow in realizing that children have ulcers is that children's symp toms are very much., different from adult symptoms.' "Because their symptoms dif fer ; from adults," he added, "their ulcers go unrecognized and they are dismissed as neu rotic, finicky, or feeding prob lems." Tudor estimated that' one to five per cent of all children have ulcers in some form, compared to 10 per cent of all adults. But he said he is convinced that the incidence is higher because of failure to recognize the symp toms until recently. "The classic symptom for adult is stomach pain," -he said, "they drink some milk and find temporary relief then the pain recurs." , ' He said the symptoms vary with the age of children, and that they are especially hard to diagnose in newly born babies. "Children around one year tend to vomit," he said, "over two years to school age they suffer stomach pains." He said the cause of ulcers In children is not known, but that in adults emotional disturb ances undoubtedly play a role. "The sorry part," he said, "is that children are really so easy to treat. . LININGER & SONS News About Books From the Library By MISS HELEN WEBSTER Medford Librarian ?'One social movement of the last 100 years has stood out above all others the rise of women." So says Inez Irwin, the author of "Angels and Ama zons." Your public library has been an interested witness of that movement during the past half century. In 1912, 'for instance, its trustees were pondering the propriety of allowing women to hold a meeting within its staid walls to discuss the question of their own suffrage. This week, observed national ly as Business and Professionar Women's Week, opened Sunday with a tea at the Medford hotel at which books and bulletins concerning women in business were on display. Rights Established Inez Irwin continues to point out that women's right to vote and her right to work were fair ly well established with the World War. The bitter and bel ligerent early feminist has given way, she remarks, to the professional woman assured of her right to a place in the busi ness world, and of her right to have both marriage and a ca reer. And yet the problem of wo men in business is not entirely solved. Esther Harding, out of her .broad experience as a prac ticing physician and consulting psychologist, discusses it further in her book, "The Way of All Women." , Why do women work? For pin money? To get away from housework? These questions are answered in a study, "Why Wo men Work," published by the Public Affairs Committee. Using material drawn from a question naire issued by the National Fed eration of Business and Profes sional Women's Clubs, the com mittee finds that 48 per cent of employed women have depend ents solely or partially depend ent on their marriage. Success Stories , . "Successful Women and How They Attained Success" is a col lection of human interest stories about American women who have attained fame or fortune in their chosen professions- Sug gestions for opportunities in bus iness open to women and the be havior that leads to success are outlined in "She Strives to' Con quer," by "Frances Maule. Miss Maule has also written 'Girl With a Pay Check; How She Lands It Holds It, Makes It Grow." "There Is a Right Job for Ev ery Woman" maintains Anne Heywood in her book by that title. Whether you want to change jobs or merely to im prove the caliber of your cur rent work, you'll find young wo men in business and covers al most every conceivable problem they meet. Aviation, Advertising "Needed Women in Avi ation" is a book by Dicker MeyJ er that may be just the sugges tion you need. Or you may find Estelle Hamburger's book, "It's a Woman's Business," a gay, in formal story of a career in ad vertising even more enticing. "Ladies of the Press," by Ishbel Ross reviews with gusto the his tory of women in journalism. The;e by no means exhaust your public library's resources in vocational books for women, but since Business and Profes sional Women's Week is follow ed this year by National News paper Week, the brisk, thumb nail biographies of women. who have made an important con tribution to newspaper writing in this country of "Ladies of the Press" seems an appropriate place to stop.
