A cross section of the nation's newspapers agreed today that President Eisenhower will prob ably not run again in 1956. Vice President Richard M. Nixon was the most prominently mentioned substitute candidate. Many of the editorial writers hesitated to make a flat predic tion that Mr. Eisenhower's heart fttacfc will force his retirement from politics. But others said an Eisenhower candidacy next year is "incon ceivable." Nixon, who is already taking over some of the President's du ties, was regarded by many as the most probable Republican candidate if Mr. Eisenhower bows out. The closest to an endorsement came from the Chicago Sun Times. It said that if Mr. Eisen hower doesn't run, the GOP would "do well" to choose Mil ton S. Eisenhower, the Presi dent's brother and the man who could best "mirror his thoughts ideals, and principles." Others mentioned were form er Gov. Thomas E. Dewey of New York, twice GOP candidate for the presidency, and Govs,. Goodwin J. Knight of California, I Christian Herter of Massachu setts, William Stratton of Illin ois and Fred Hall of Kansas. Still more were Henry Cabot Lodge, U. S. ambassador to the United Nations, and Sen. Clif ford Case of New Jersey. Chief Justice Earl Warren also drew attention, but it was pointed out that he has previous ly said he would not run under any conditions. Newspapers which said edit orially that Mr. Eisenhower's health has all but ruled out a second term included the Chica go Daily Tribune, the Detroit Free Press, the Detroit News, the Tampa Tribune, the Char lotte, S.C., News, the Charlotte Observer, the Washington Post and Times-Herald, and the Wash ington Evening Star. Other newspapers, praised President Eisenhower for set ting up his administration in such a way that it can run smoothly ' during his , illness'. These included the New York Herald Tribune, the New -York World-Telegram and Sun, the Los Angeles Times, the Colum bus, O., Citizen and the Boston Globe. The Tampa Tribune said the Democratic presidential nomin ation "now begins to look like a gilt-edged pass to the White House" and the Charlotte Obser ver commented "there are no other 'Ikes' in the GOP stable." The Atlanta Constitution warned "the people do not have any great confidence in Vice President Nixon . . . There is grave danger- the administra tion may disintegrate."
