I95S Top Criminologist Warns Lie Detector Subject to Abuse i ' Washington ftl.R) One of the nation's top criminologists warned Saturday that the lie de tector must never be abused for it could be employed as a terrible weapon of "character assassina tion" and to "sell justice." John E. Reid, formerly of the Chicago police crime detection laboratory, said lie detector ex aminers must be incorruptible because they are in constant danger of being offered bribes. Head of Own Firm Reid is now head of his own lie detector examination firm and a vice-president of the new ly formed American Academy of Polygraph Oie detector) Ex aminers. One of the principle functions of the organization is to pfovide a "code of ethics" and professional standards for lie detector examiners. The Academy wound up its first annual meeting here Satur .day. During the two-day confer ence, members swapped "trade secrets" and discussed means of improving lie detector techv niques and professional stand ards. Need Competent Examiners In an interview, Reid said the increasing use of lie detectors by police and courts has empha sized the need for competent. honest lie detector examiners. He said he himself has been of fered bribes by criminals. He said a corrupt lie detector examiner is "like a surgeon with a blunt knife." Q'He can sell justice pretty cneaply," Reid said. "He can al so ruin ' a man's reputation. The circus will be sponsored here by the , Josephine and Jack- High Court Rules on Joss Slaying Case o Salem U.R) The surviv ors of a woman murdered by her husband may sue the hus band's estate for damages, the Oregon Supreme Court ruled Saturday in the first case of its kind in this state. Forest G. Joss murdered his wife, Esther C. Joss, and then committed suicide. The Jackson County Circuit court dismissed the complaint on the theory that the marital .relationship effected immunity. . The Supreme Court, in an op inion by Justice James T. Brand, said that when a husband in flicts intentional harm upon his wife, , the peace and harmony of the home has been so dam aged that there is no danger that it will be further impaired by permitting her to file action against him. ' The court also held that the Students Demand Request Rejection San Francisco (U.R) A group of. 63 Chinese students and professionals in the San Francisco Bay Area have ap pealed to President Eisenhower to reject a Communist demand that their status be investigated by a third pqwer. The Chinese Communist pro posal was made at current talks being held in Geneva, Switzer land. The appeal, dated Sept. 7, stated that members of the group would "refuse to go to the Chinese mainland as long a? the Cfcmmunist despotism exists there" and chose to live In America "to fight for the o cause of a free China." . Alfred C. Apitz, executor for the estate of Mrs. Joss, brought suit against the administration of the husband's estate to re cover $15,000 damages for wrongful death.' The Supreme Court reversed the trial court decree and sent the case back for trial. The Supreme Court case In volved the deaths of Forest Glenn Joss, 59, and his wife, Es ther C. Joss, 49, a Phoenix school teacher. Their bodies were found Dec. 10, 1951, in their Coleman creek home by Charles Shull, Medford real estate man. Evidence indicated that Joss had killed his wife about Dec. 7 and then committed suicide. Mrs. Joss had filed divorce proceedings against her husband a few days earlier. Japanese Refugees Arrive in America San Francisco (U.R) The first Japansese to come to the United States by ship under pro visions of the refugee relief act will arrive in San Francisco to day aboard the S.S. President Cleveland. They are Mr. and Mrs. Zen- saku Shishido and their three children, Atsuko, Yoshinaga and Hiroshi, all of Fukushima Pre fecture, and Shosaku Saito, of Yamagata Prefecture. xne snismao family is en route to San Martin, Calif., un der the sponsorship of a relative. New Acts This year's edition of the cir cus will feature newly imported foreign acts and a wide variety of trained animals, according to L. C. Taylor, Medford, general chairman of the joint circus com ittee of the two Shrine clubs. Appearing with the circus will be Freya Josse, German aerial artist, and the Pallamedes, with their high trapeze balancing act. Other featured performers in clude the Cycling Chaludis, the Merkys, comedy contortionists; Harold Barnes, tight-wire dancer, and the Sikorsges, teeth suspensionists. Animal Acts ' Animal acts include the Besa lou baby elephants, trained by Mac and Peggy MacDonald; seven varieties of jungle cats, trained by George J. Keller; Klauser's bears, Tiebor's sea lions, and Ostermaier's goats. The clowns are headlined by Loll Jacobs, Rudy Docky, Char ley Cheer, and Chester and Joe Sherman. Danish Film Wins Award at Venice . Venice (U.R) A Danish film won first prize at the 16th International Film Festival here Saturday night and an American film, "The Big Knife," placed third behind a Russian movie. The Danish film, "Ordet" (the word) won the coveted winged golden lion of St. Mark. It was directed by famed director Carl Theodore Dryer. Second prize went to a Rus sian color film, "The Cicala," from a short story by Anton Chekov, directed by S. Samso nov. The U.S. film was the "Big Knife," directed -by Robert Al drich and starring Jack Palance and Ida Lupino. It is based on a play by Clifford Odets. Fourth prize went to the Ital ian film "Le Amiche," ("Girls Alone") directed by Michelan gelo Antonioni, with glamorous Eleonora Rossi Drago in the lead role. . Critics were practically unani mous in their approval of the jury's choice of "Ordet." Formosan Declares Reds Will Attack In Southwest Asia Tokyo (U.R) The Chinese Nationalist Ambassador to Japan predicted Saturday that the Com munists will attack in Asia soon, with Singapore as their primary target. He added that capture of Sing apore by the Reds would ser iously upset the plan of the democratic powers for the de fense of Southeast Asia. ' r, In an exclusive United Press interview, Ambassador Holling- ton K. Tong warned that "pnee Singapore goes, Malaya is cer tain to follow. With Malaya and Singapore in Communist hands, Indonesia becomes a Communist state." Showdown at Geneva Tong said the showdown will come at the Big Four foreign ministers meeting in Geneva next month. He said that goodwill has been built up to show the world Russia's peaceful intentions, but that "generalities" of the sum mit leaders will collapse when the foreign ministers '"come down to details." Tong said that when the Com munist "bluff is called, the Reds will become angry again and re new assaults leading to their domination of Singapore, Indo. china and elsewhere which prove to be weak spots." Poker Players Get The Bird Portland (U.R) Mr. and Mrs. Lyla Swadener of Port land got up Saturday morn ' ing after a lale deuces-wild poker game io find the game had been changed to owls wild. There on the poker table sat a wild owl, which had appar ently flown down the chim ney during the night. The bird was scrutinizing a crummy hand of 4-7-8-jack-king. Swadener said the bird sat poker-faced until he dealt it a hand of four 6's and a joker. Thus stimulated, the feathery creature took off and out a deftly - opened front door to join the other owls-wild. Lebanon Youngster Killed by Automobile Lebanon (U.R) Edwin Wheeler, 8, died instantly Fri as he darted across the highway day when he was struck by a car in front of his home two miles northeast of her on the Cascade B. line highway. Edwin was with his younger 6-year-old Terry, and his moth er, Mrs. Walter Wheeler, visiting a neighbor across the highway from his home when he saw his home when he saw his father returning from work. He saw and avoided one car on the highway, but was struck and killed by a car driven by Dallas E. Smith, Lacomb, as he ran to meet his father. Bevelhymer, Portland. Bevelhymer told police he sanctioned the match and ad mitted he had signed papers de signed to show that his daughter was 16 years old in order to speed the marriage. Thurman was arrested Friday night on a warrant from Salem charging parole violation. The Portland women's protective di vision said it would take steps to prevent the marriage. Thurman served 10 months of a two-year forgery sentence and was paroled this year. Waiters and waitresses in 1953 received $450,000,000 in tips.
