Top Criminologist
Warns Lie Detector
Subject to Abuse
i '
Washington ftl.R) One of
the nation's top criminologists
warned Saturday that the lie de
tector must never be abused for
it could be employed as a terrible
weapon of "character assassina
tion" and to "sell justice."
John E. Reid, formerly of the
Chicago police crime detection
laboratory, said lie detector ex
aminers must be incorruptible
because they are in constant
danger of being offered bribes.
Head of Own Firm
Reid is now head of his own
lie detector examination firm
and a vice-president of the new
ly formed American Academy
of Polygraph Oie detector) Ex
aminers. One of the principle
functions of the organization is
to pfovide a "code of ethics"
and professional standards for
lie detector examiners.
The Academy wound up its
first annual meeting here Satur
.day. During the two-day confer
ence, members swapped "trade
secrets" and discussed means of
improving lie detector techv
niques and professional stand
ards. Need Competent Examiners
In an interview, Reid said the
increasing use of lie detectors
by police and courts has empha
sized the need for competent.
honest lie detector examiners.
He said he himself has been of
fered bribes by criminals.
He said a corrupt lie detector
examiner is "like a surgeon with
a blunt knife."
Q'He can sell justice pretty
cneaply," Reid said. "He can al
so ruin ' a man's reputation.
Character assassination with a
misused lie detector is very
easy."

Reds Will Attack
In Southwest Asia
Tokyo (U.R) The Chinese
Nationalist Ambassador to Japan
predicted Saturday that the Com
munists will attack in Asia soon,

fense of Southeast Asia. ' r,
In an exclusive United Press
interview, Ambassador Holling-
ton K. Tong warned that "pnee
Singapore goes, Malaya is cer
tain to follow. With Malaya and
Singapore in Communist hands,
Indonesia becomes a Communist
state."
Showdown at Geneva
Tong said the showdown will
come at the Big Four foreign
ministers meeting in Geneva
next month.
He said that goodwill has been
built up to show the world
Russia's peaceful intentions, but
that "generalities" of the sum
mit leaders will collapse when
the foreign ministers '"come
down to details."
Tong said that when the Com
munist "bluff is called, the Reds
will become angry again and re
new assaults leading to their
domination of Singapore, Indo.
china and elsewhere which prove
