To Solicit Ads Members of the Junior Service League will begin soliciting advertising Mon day for the program for their annual "Follies," to be held Nov. 2 and 3. Proceeds from the chow will be used by the league to support the kindergarten for the deaf maintained by members of the league. " Car Hit City police said that a parked car registered to George Weidenmann, San Diego, Calif., was knocked about 10 feet when struck by another ve hicle Friday. The collision oc curred in front of 111 Lindley st. and the Weidenmann auto received damage to the left rear and to the right rear tire. Offi cers were told that the other car did not stop at the scene and was not identified. Bottle Drive The Medford Legion Post 15 will help the Scout Air Explorer Squadron 14 during its bottle drive starting today at 1 p.m. Any person hav ing a pickup truck wishing to id in the drive are urged to come to the American Legion Home at 531 South Riverside ve. at the above time. News About Servicemen Marines Planning 'Val-Rogue' Squad A squad of men will be en listed to - represent the Rogue valley in the new 4th Oregon Beaver Platoon, it was an nounced Saturday. The squad, dubbed the "Val- Rogue"' Leathernecks, will con sist of about 10 men, and will join the Platoon on Sept. 28 in Portland. They will leave Med ford Sept. 26. James Riggs, 26, whose wife, Betty, lives at 715 West Main st., recently took part in river, crossing exercises in southern Germany. ' The first troops went over in boats under a smoke screen. They were fol lowed by infantrymen who crossed on a pontoon foot bride, built under simulated combat conditions. Private Riggs, son of Jacob Riggs, route 2, Grants Pass, is a jeep driver in Company B of the Fifth Infantry division 11th regiment. He entered the Army in September of 1954, complet ing basic training at Ft. Ord, Calif. TO TAKE TRAINING Craig Gilbert, airman third class, left last Wednesday for Denver, Colo., where he will re port for training in electronics at Lowery Air Force base. The young man is a son of Mr. and Mrs. S. L. Gilbert, 2510 Lyman ave. He was graduated from Medford High school last June, and was here on leaye for sev eral days after completing basic training at Parks Air Force base near Oakland, Calif. Man Gives Wrong Answer, Wins Car, But Can't Drive Hollywood (U.R) A San Diego, Calif., man whose eye sight is so poor he can't obtain a driver's license Saturday won a new $8,700 auto by answering incorrectly a geography ques tion. The winner's name J. Reed Thompson, 47, was drawn .from a cement mixer loaded with 500, 000 names outside a local radio station KNX celebrating its 35th anniversary with a "birthday bonanza" of $65,000 in prizes. Thompson was telephoned by the station and asked, "In what city is Signal Hill located." "Long Beach," he answered, and the station said he was right and entitled to the . car. But sec onds later the calls began com ing from Signal Hill, Calif., resi dents insisting their community Prune To Be Used For School .Lunches Portland (U.R) Federal pur chase of surplus Italian prunes, to be used in a non-profit school lunch program, was announced Friday by the fruit and vege table division of the Department of Agriculture. Robert Eaton, field representa tive for the division, said the purchase program was planned to relieve a large supply of Italian prunes in Oregon with out undue loss to growers. Only U.S. No. 1 grades will be pur chased, for $1.35 per half bushel. Myrtle Creek Logger Dies After Accident Roseburg U.R) Harlan Isaac, 31, Myrtle Creek was fatally injured Saturday in a logging accident 12 miles east of Days Creek. Isaac died in the woods at 9:05 a.m. some 45 minutes after he was struck by a. log which fouled on a stump while being dragged by a catskinner. He was a chokesetter for Doty Bros, logging operation. The logging -fatality was the 10th in Douglas county this year, according to Coroner Jim Powers. From Aswan in southern Egypt to the Nile Delta, the banks of the river are settled and cultivated to a depth of only about 10 miles back from the shores. Egypt's borders enclose a land area equal to Texas and New Mexico combined. Yet it squeezes a population of 22,221, 000, two and a half times that of Texas, into three per cent of this space. Turkish Officers Suspended Pending Riot Investigation Istanbul (U.R) Turkish Prime Minister Adnan Menderes announced Saturday that three high-ranking Army officers have been suspended pending an out come of an inquiry into the re cent riots. He named them in a broad cast as Gen. Vedat Garan, com mander of the 4th Army; Gen. Fazil Bilge, commander of the City of Istanbul, and Brig. Gen. Nedim Erensoy, commander of the Istanbul garrison. The Premier's broadcast gave no further details. Investigation Under Way Security police disclosed earlier that an investigation was being made and said most of those arrested for the anti-Greek riots were refugees from West ern Thrace who had sought re fuge in Turkey during the last month. Security police said the fact that the riots started at the same time both in Ismir and Is tanbul showed it was carried out by a plan, possibly led by the' Communists, and was ar ranged by an organization hav ing headquarters in Beirut. $3,000,000 Addition To Lloyd's Announced Portland (U.R) J. J. New berry company Saturday an nounced plans for a $3,000,000 store at the proposed Lloyd shopping center in Portland. The Newberry store, accord ing to J. E. Nelson, president of the national variety chain, would be located at the north end of the shopping project, just south of N.E. Broadway. The store was tentatively planned for 1957, Nelson said.
