Turkish Officers
Suspended Pending
Riot Investigation
Istanbul (U.R) Turkish
Prime Minister Adnan Menderes
announced Saturday that three
high-ranking Army officers have
been suspended pending an out
come of an inquiry into the re
cent riots.
He named them in a broad
cast as Gen. Vedat Garan, com
mander of the 4th Army; Gen.
Fazil Bilge, commander of the
City of Istanbul, and Brig. Gen.
Nedim Erensoy, commander of
the Istanbul garrison.
The Premier's broadcast gave
no further details.
Investigation Under Way
Security police disclosed
earlier that an investigation was
being made and said most of
those arrested for the anti-Greek
riots were refugees from West
ern Thrace who had sought re
fuge in Turkey during the last
month.
Security police said the fact
that the riots started at the
same time both in Ismir and Is
tanbul showed it was carried
out by a plan, possibly led by
the' Communists, and was ar
ranged by an organization hav
ing headquarters in Beirut.
