White City Phone Talbot 6-2711 Pickin' Pears By SID HOLLINGSWORTH The Veterans of Foreign Wars posts and auxiliaries in Oregon and northern California, with their contributions that helped Camp White veterans celebrate Labor Day in a new way, will be able to receive a glowing report from, the 25 or more representa tives who were here to make their Field day a success. The turnout for the affair, and the participation of a large section of the home membership in the all day program of events, despite the heat and the humid ity, was all the more remarkable because of the spontaneous in terest shown in each of. the sports and games arranged for them. Special Services technicians and VFW auxiliary ladies headed by Lelia Birch, hospital chair man, who thought up the idea of a Field day, have been working for several months to make a success of the first venture of its kind to be held at Camp White. Despite some misgivings con cerning the state of apathy of the men as the preliminaries were being run off, the fine spir it of sportsmanship and the large number of veterans taking part, established a precedent for an annual Field day on this special holiday. The outside heat made it nec essary to hold the afternoon program in the auditorium, and so many showed up for these events that the number was lim ited to 10 entries in each of the last few contests. Much of the credit for the way the show was run off without a hitch is due to the planning and the direction provided by Frank Glonning, chief of Special Ser vices and his corps of assistants Al Birman, Bud Ash, Jim Rea and Art Mick. They were all over the place getting the games organized and rounding up the results. In no case was there a dispute over the outcome. The proceedings were started at 9:30 a.m. with remarks by Manager E. K. Ricker and the officials for the day, including the VFW representatives, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Birch, Helen Lusk, Maxine Aldridge, Ron Dic kens, Jerry and Mary Wyman and Lorraine Kell. The entire area around the theater radiated a carnival at mosphere with horseshoes, shuf fleboard, miniature golf, basket ball throw, ring toss, croquet, bowling and other lawn games in progress. The pool hall, the card room and the green room were busy with those games. Guessing contests were"the at traction at the theatre entrance. The afternoon was given, over to feature events including races for fat men, thin men, backward walking, ping pong toss, balloon blowing, shoe kick, pie eating, cigar smoking and other novel contests. The tallest, the short est, the curliest haired and the baldest members were singled out and awarded prizes. There was even a prize for Casey Jones who, with Card No. 8, is the member who has lived here the longest. , The Camp White orchestra provided the musical interludes and at the end of the day, ice cream was served to all and sundry. Second and third prizes of cigarettes and canteen books were awarded on the spot after the games, also the prizes for specialty performances. Illinois of ficials have a pretty simple form ula for determining, in most cases, whether to approve appli cations for unemployment com pensation. The formula is just nine words. Is the applicant "able to work?" . . . "actively seeking work?" Chairman Louis N. Blumen thal of the state labor depart ment's board of review said elig ibility often depends on the an swers to those questions. Most of the cases appealed to his board center on that eligibility issue, he said, and the decision isn't always easy. 'One jobless laborer said Chi cago's 20-cent carfares kept him from trying more than a hand ful of plants for a job. Advise Walking The board agreed that stead ily rising fares are a "serious" problem - for job-seekers, but turned down his claim saying the ablebodied man could have walked to several nearby fac tories to apply for work. Many of life's problems, the board said, can be solved faster "by wearing out a little shoe leather rather than the seat of one's trousers." Then there was the woman who cooked kosher food and found herself out of a job. She said she had applied only St other Chicago eating places that serve Kosher food 27 of them.
