Setchell Paces Men's Field into 1st Round of Southern Oregon Golf Scrap THree torrid-shooting record cracking borne course linksmen, whose sizzling qualifying scores withstood yesterday's assault by a multitude of visiting stars, were in the limelight along with defending champion Dom Pro vost Jr., Portland, today as men's s maicn piay opened in xne zein annual Southern Oregon ooll Championships on the fairways and greens of popular Rogue Valley Country club. Matches in the holiday week end classic continue through Monday, Labor day. Women had a day off today after Thursday qualifying and have their first round tussles Saturday. A total of 219 men and 63 women qualifiers made the 1955 show the biggest in history of the classic. Course Record , Phil Getchell?21-year-old Med fordite and Stanford university star, was medalist, establishing a competitive course, record with (steady, sure, consistent play which netted him a six-under-par 66. And, after the links was clear ed in Thursday qualifying, Clay ton Lewis, Medford, and Harry Millette, Yreka, Calif., also an RVCC member, were still right behind Getchell in the Contest for championship , flight seeded positions. Lewis also, bettered the old course mark with a 67 and Millette with a 68 knotted the standard established in 1955 by Tal Smith,' San Lorenzo, Calif) Bob McKevitt, Devils Lake, who toured the course in one-under-par 71, withT an eagle three on 18, came closest to the leaders. Bob Atkinson, Portland, 1951 and 1952 champ, and Wen dell Wissler, Medford, were even par with 72. Provost, seeded No. Z automatically, scored 72 in practice. Art Abrahamson, Everett, Wash., and Jack Brande, Leban on, two top-rated divoters in the tourney, turned in 73 cards along with three Rogue Valley men, Eddie Simmons, six times SO winner, Larry) Butler and Bob Rector. Siegmund Medalist n Miss Sue DeVore, Medford, de fending women's champ, was top performer in the feminine field yesterday with one-under-par 73 practice round. However, Miss Shirley Siegmund, youthful en try from Eugene, swiped the honors from the more experi enced qualifiers. She scored a 79 for medalist honors. Mrs. W. W. Davies, Medford, seven times SO victor, was next with 80 and Miss Carole Jo Kabler, Suther lirynational junior and state sen iorand junior champ, followed with-an 81. Sue will take onCMrs. A. G. Sfyowels Jr., Eugene, in her first match tomorrow morning. Miss Siegmund is matched , against Mrs. Maxina Hammond of Rogue Valley and "Mrs. Davies meets Mrs. Donna Sproat, Klamath Falls. Entries from the home course W In the title flight o 16 include Mrs. Mshr Reymers and Mrs. William Miller. Mrs. Reymers first engages Mrs. Jack Laing, , Portland, and Mrs. Richard Grubbs, another Portlander is opponent of Mrs. Miller. Getchell, heading the bracket of 64 title seekers, encountered Medford Ingram, Salem, in his first match today while Provost went against young Wayne Sa bine, Redding, Calif. Lewis faced Lute Clement, Portland, and Mil lette took on Ben Dolp, Port land. McKevitt's foe was George ' Parsons, Seattle; Atkinson met Dr. Bruce Stanley, a RoguePVal ley hopeful, and Wissler went against Verneo Hallin, Eureka, Calif. Simmons' rival was Jim Vin um, Areata, Calif., while Rector met Eddie Hall, Medford, and : Butler teed off against Ward Bebb, Medford. Abrahamson op posed Carl Wood, Klamath Falls and Brande tackled Tom Bournes, Coos Bay. Bob Prall, Oregon Golf asso ciation medal play titlist, was among those with 76s and play ed Walter Stanley, Eureka, to day. Golfers who scored 80 or bet ter made the men's champion ship flight while 94 was high card in the women's title group ing. Other men's entries are playing in 11 flights of 16s and women start out tomorrow in six lower flights of eights. 27 RV Men Of the entries in the men's top flight 27 are members of the Rogue Valley club which, of course, has the largest entry. All men's flights played one round today and the beaten 32 of the championship flight had their first round in the first flight. All men's flights play sec ond rounds Saturday and the championship group has its third round. On Sunday the champion ship flight has its fourth and fifth rounds, the first flight has its third and fourth and other flights their third. Women play one round on Saturday. The championship flight has its second and third rounds on Sunday and the first flight its first and second rounds. Second rounds in other flights are set. Thirty-six hole finals are set in both men's and women's cham pionship battles on Monday with 18 holes in .other flights. Golfing fans of the valley are invited to join the galleries for the matches. This just about clinches the announcement that the Oakland Acorns, a member of the PCL for 53syears, will make move for the 1956 campaign. "It is probable that the direc tors will go over to look at the Vancouver ball park while the meeting is n in Seattle," a spokesman for the PCL admitted today. "While C. . L. (Brick) Laws, owner of the Oaks, says nothing has been signed anent the mov ing, it is reported that the move will be announced after the final day of play. No Civic Movement The odd thing about the move away from Oakland is the fact that no single person and no organization has made any ef fort to keep the ball club in that city. Every time someone tries to move the Sacramento franchise, or one of the cities from the other smaller leagues, there al ways is a big civic movement to keep professional baseball in the city. "But there has been no or ganized move in this city," says Alan Ward, sports editor of the Oakland Tribune. "Brick knows that and he has known for some time that baseball is dead here." While the franchise shift will be the first one in the league since the San Francisco Missions moved south to become the Hollywood Stars in 1938, it will come as no great shock. Called up were first basemen Joe Altobelli, outfielder Rocco Colavito, infielders Bobby Young and Stan Pawlowski, and pitcher Hank Aguirre.
