Out lines for self guided tours will be distributed and guests will have an opportunity to visit all departments and examine spec ial exhibits which will illustrate the services and holdings of the State library. Cornelia Marvin, later the wife of Governor Walter Pierce, was the "pioneer spirit" who brought to the state the early inspiration and determination that books and the .opportunity of reading should be made available to the most isolated areas of the state. Mrs. Pierce once commented that "The really distinctive and unique feature of our Oregon system was the beginning (the first in the country) of package libraries' for debaters and speak ers, and the practice of sending books throughout the state by mail." Fifty years later the state li brary has grown to include legis lative reference, the. state arch ives, school reference, and ad visory services to public librar ies. Direct service to Oregonians who do not have access to a lo cal library, and supplementary services to existing libraries re main of primary importance. Re quests for material come from the rancher at Halfway, the for est ranger at Unity, the bee keep er at Rainier, and the orchardist at Sisters. Patrons not only want books to read during their rec reation hours, but. assistance in their businesses, vocations, or hobbies. "When were rotary egg beaters invented," "how do you prepare budgets for a small town," or "under the state min eral laws, how do you file . a claim."
