Trends in Shoe
For School Wear
New York Here is a brief
run-down on what you and your
youngsters will find in the shoe
shops this fall.
Leather pumps are a big thing
ior little girls. The single strap
shell silhousette is still the most
Popular single type in dress and
Party shoes. Little girls' feet will
really twinkle in the new lioter
leather pumps. Patent, of course,
is a perennial in girls' party
shoes, but printed leathers, me
tallic finishes and the lusters
are taking some of the play away
from it.
For school shoes, fine crushed
grains and soft glove fathers are
most popular. Suedes are used
in gome school shoes, frequently
in. combination with smooth
leathers.
Boys' shoes more than ever
follow Father's. Tassel ties,
gored slip-ons, loafers, wing-tips
and U-wings .are most popular.
Low-top lines in two-eyelet styles
will probably be the most sought
after shoe among boys this Fall.
The brown family is still Num
ber 1 with boys, although black
is coming up fast. Black leather
is making a comeback mainly
because of the greys and blues
which are being featured in boys'
suits. Cordovan color which
is a sort of happy medium is
also being shown widely.
The most popular leathers are
the fine grains. They are being
used in both dress and sports
shoes. An innovation is high
walled leather wetting which
adds a real fashion not to the

Salem All Oregonians are

from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Miss Elea

held to celebrate the 50th anni

lines for self guided tours will
be distributed and guests will
have an opportunity to visit all
departments and examine spec

the services and holdings of the
State library.
Cornelia Marvin, later the wife
of Governor Walter Pierce, was
the "pioneer spirit" who brought
to the state the early inspiration
and determination that books
and the .opportunity of reading
should be made available to the
most isolated areas of the state.
Mrs. Pierce once commented
that "The really distinctive and
unique feature of our Oregon
system was the beginning (the
first in the country) of package
libraries' for debaters and speak
ers, and the practice of sending
books throughout the state by
mail."
Fifty years later the state li
brary has grown to include legis
lative reference, the. state arch
ives, school reference, and ad
visory services to public librar
ies. Direct service to Oregonians
who do not have access to a lo
cal library, and supplementary
services to existing libraries re
main of primary importance. Re
quests for material come from
the rancher at Halfway, the for
est ranger at Unity, the bee keep
er at Rainier, and the orchardist
at Sisters. Patrons not only want
books to read during their rec
reation hours, but. assistance in
their businesses, vocations, or
hobbies. "When were rotary egg
beaters invented," "how do you
prepare budgets for a small
town," or "under the state min
eral laws, how do you file . a
claim." Hundreds of letters are
received each week demonstrat
ing that Oregonians turn to the
State library for answers to

the American Library associa
tion and librarian of Seattle Pub
lic library, and Dr. Carl W.
Hintz, president of the Oregon
Library association, University,
