Bulky summer-time cooling equipment has been so stream lined that now most units blend readily with the decor of a house or apartment. Several of the new models . from orfe manufacturer can be mounted flush with the window Q sill, permitting the conventional Q use of shades, curtains and Qdraperies. Another firm has designed units to be recessed in a wall or built into bookcases or other storage furniture. Still other units are portable, for use in any part of the room. Colors generally are confined to the neutral pearl and gray combination that harmonizes with any decorative scheme. But one firm is testing consumer re action to colored frames. These would provide a change from the standard color of the grille frame to any one of four pastel shades of green, yellow, pink and ivory. 92-Year-Old Portland Woman Enjoys Trip to South Africa By JOHN R. HAYS United Press Correspondent Portland, Ore. (U.R) Mrs. Sarah Johnson, 92, traveled 20, 000 miles "just out of curiosity" to visit the site of her late hus band's missionary work in southern Africa. Mrs. Johnson, now back at her home here, appeared surprised that her friends could be shocked by her making such a long jour ney at her age. "Why," she said. "I just up and went, that's all." She is the widow of Eben S. Johnson, who as Methodist pre late, was in charge of a vast ter ritory across the tip of South Africa from Mozambique to Port ugese West Africa from 1917 to 1936. Bishop Johnson died in Port land in 1939 and Mrs. Johnson embarked on the trip to Africa as a sort of "pilgrimage" to hon or his memory. She found that many natives in the Capetown area, where her visit was centered remembered her and her husband. They show ered her with handmade gifts, including crocheted doilies and beadwork. She said she found many changes on her visit, but none so great as those she and her husband saw in their 20 years in Africa. "When- we were there," Mrs. Johnson said, "East Africans thought twin babies were bad luck and one must be destroyed. Today, twins are often welcome in native Christian families." One of the changes most ap preciated by the missionary's wife was the telephone, which she said now is a common thing in civilized portions of Africa. She remembered her hus band's safaris into the Belgian Congo when his native carriers beat out messages on hollow log drums to announce the coming of the missionary to cannibal istic tribes ahead. Mrs. Johnson stayed with her daughter. Dorothea, wife of architect Frank Spears, in Con stantia, 30 miles from Cape Town. She traveled by ship from New York to Capetown, Capt. Harry M.
