Only Oregon Operation Producing Natural Carbon Dioxide Located in Ashland Area Jackson county has the only plant in. the state producing nat ural carbon dioxide, used for manufacture of dry ice, accord ing to Max Schafer, geologist for the State Department of Geo logy and Mineral Industries. Writing in the latest issue of The Ore.-Bin, Schafer pointed out that the plant, located south east of Ashland, produces enough carbon dioxide to place Oregon third in the nation in the value of this product. t Taken From Water The plant, owned by Gas-Ice Corporation, whose headquarters are in Seattle, is an. operation that obtains carbon dioxide from groundwater. The carbon diox ide is manufactured into dry ice, which is used for refrigeration and for carbonating "soda pop" and soda water. The Gas-Ice Corporation plant and , wells are located about three miles southeast of Ashland on the west side of Emigrant creek. The plant has 10 wells from which carbon-dioxide rich water is pumped. Most of the wells are from 200 to 300 feet deep. Total pro duction of water from the wells is about 1,000 gallons an hour. Water is pumped into a separ ator, a tank with a pipe at the top and an outlet at the bottom. The gas bubbles rise to the top and are drawn off to the plant. The water flows out through the bottom of the tank, and is di verted to the stream. Moisture Removed The gas pumped from the separating tanks enters a cooler and dehumidifier where the moisture is removed. Formerly some sulphur was present, neces sitating use of a charcoal filter. However, when the wells low ered the water table slightly, this contaminant disappeared. The cooled gas is then pumped to the "condenser" where it is put under 500 pounds per square inch pressure, and is cooled by ammonia refrigeration to 10 de grees below zero. At these con ditions, most of the gas is liqui fied. The unwanted gases are cleaned from the system at reg ular intervals. Temperature Drops The liquid carbon dioxide is pumped to the "receiver" under 150 pounds per square inch pressure and at a temperature of about 40 degrees below zero. From the receiver the liquid is suddenly released through a small opening into the "snow press." The press is at atmos pheric pressure and this sudden release of pressure results in a drop in temperature of the liquid. The temperature drop - is enough to solidfy about half of the liquid carbon dioxide. The unsolidified liquid is returned to the system. The "snow" or solidified particles are pressed into 80-pound blocks by a hy draulic "snow press," and Ihe blocks are wrapped in cardboard cartons in preparation for ship ment. The production of the plant is about 10 tons per day.
