Business Belief in Threes
Hollywood (U.R) The
deaths of bombastic Carmen

Saturday the fearful show bus

strikes in threes.
Friday's swift double deaths,
Miss Miranda's by a heart at

cancer, made a total of three
along with last Sunday's death
of actor Robert Francis in a
plane crash.
Miss Miranda, 41, Portugal

elaborate costumes, died early
Friday in her Beverly Hills man
sion a few hours after filming
a television show with comed

wood? Miss Ball, 21, who lost a leg
to cancer and had been fighting
death for 18 months, succumbed
to the dread disease in a private
home Friday afternoon only a
week after leaving the nearby
City of Hope .hospital. Prior to
her death, doctors described her

stardom for his role as Ensign
Willieeith in the film version
of "Th Caine Mutiny," was kill
ed with two other persons in
the flaming crash of a light pri

Miss Miranda apparently first
was stricken during the filming
of the Durante TV show late
Thursday night. At one point,
she dropped on one knee short
of breath. Durante gagged thru
the break as the cameras rolled,
saying, "That's okay, Carmy, I'll
take that line."
After her death, Durante sad
ly explained "I thought she had
slipped . . . but she goes ahead
with her lines. This is a terrible
thing."

turned home from the TV show
and danced and sang in her
home for a small party of friends.

Only Oregon Operation Producing Natural
Carbon Dioxide Located in Ashland Area
Jackson county has the only
plant in. the state producing nat
ural carbon dioxide, used for
manufacture of dry ice, accord
ing to Max Schafer, geologist for
the State Department of Geo
logy and Mineral Industries.
Writing in the latest issue of
The Ore.-Bin, Schafer pointed
out that the plant, located south
east of Ashland, produces enough
carbon dioxide to place Oregon
third in the nation in the value
of this product. t
Taken From Water
The plant, owned by Gas-Ice
Corporation, whose headquarters
are in Seattle, is an. operation
that obtains carbon dioxide from
groundwater. The carbon diox
ide is manufactured into dry ice,
which is used for refrigeration
and for carbonating "soda pop"
and soda water.
The Gas-Ice Corporation plant
and , wells are located about
three miles southeast of Ashland
on the west side of Emigrant
creek. The plant has 10 wells
from which carbon-dioxide rich
water is pumped.
Most of the wells are from
200 to 300 feet deep. Total pro
duction of water from the wells
is about 1,000 gallons an hour.

Water is pumped into a separ
ator, a tank with a pipe at the
top and an outlet at the bottom.
The gas bubbles rise to the top
and are drawn off to the plant.
The water flows out through the
bottom of the tank, and is di
verted to the stream.
Moisture Removed
The gas pumped from the
separating tanks enters a cooler
and dehumidifier where the
moisture is removed. Formerly
some sulphur was present, neces
sitating use of a charcoal filter.
However, when the wells low
ered the water table slightly,
this contaminant disappeared.
The cooled gas is then pumped
to the "condenser" where it is
put under 500 pounds per square
inch pressure, and is cooled by
ammonia refrigeration to 10 de
grees below zero. At these con
ditions, most of the gas is liqui
fied. A small amount of nitrogen

about one-half per cent, which
is present, does not liquify at
this temperature and pressure
and is sent back into the system
with the unliquified carbon di
oxide. The unwanted gases are
cleaned from the system at reg
ular intervals.
Temperature Drops
The liquid carbon dioxide is
pumped to the "receiver" under
150 pounds per square inch
pressure and at a temperature
of about 40 degrees below zero.
From the receiver the liquid is
suddenly released through a
small opening into the "snow
press." The press is at atmos
pheric pressure and this sudden
release of pressure results in a
drop in temperature of the
liquid.
The temperature drop - is
enough to solidfy about half of
the liquid carbon dioxide. The
unsolidified liquid is returned
to the system. The "snow" or
solidified particles are pressed
into 80-pound blocks by a hy
draulic "snow press," and Ihe
blocks are wrapped in cardboard
cartons in preparation for ship
ment. The production of the plant is
about 10 tons per day.
