God wanted us to have a child. He would send us one. Her argu ment is that God does not feel that we would make good par ents and that adopting a child would go against God's wishes. She has even said that if we adopt a child, she will never recognize it as a member of the family. Don't you think she will change her mind, if we do adopt a baby? How could anyone fail to love a helpless little baby, regardless of his family back ground and the fact that we are not his real parents?" (A) I am afraid you are some thing of an idealist and fail to realize how strong prejudice can be. Because you have no preju dice Against adoptionyou see an adopted baby merely as a lovable creature. However, your mother-in-law sees an adopted baby iiot as a lovable creature but as one on whom there is a strong stigma. This would influence strongly her treatment of the" baby, notj only while he was an infant but perhaps even more so as he grew older and began to be trouble some, as all little children are at some time or other. If your mother-in-law were the only person in the family who felt this way, you might take the adoption. But you already Bothered With Poison Oak? TRY B&H POISON OAK LOTION Nature's Own Antidote AT YOUR DRUGGIST Tuesday, August 2. 1955 Personal Health By WILLIAM BRADY, Readers should address inquiries to: Dr. William Brady 263 El Camino, Beverly Hills, Calif. THE CASE OF THE TWO GERANIUMS Ohio reader sought a solution of this problem last winter. She had two- geraniums in a sunny bay window in the bedroom. But her husband Ben Told it wasnot healthful to have plants in a room where people sleep. Could I enlighten them? Well, I used to think I could. Yeah. I used to talk about ra bies, refined white flour, cheat food, "cold" cures and brushing the teeth, but frankly, I've said about all I can say on those sub jects, and I do want to hang on here as long as I can to teach you poor souls how to keep well. Time and again I have said that growing plants in any room of an artificially heated house are healthful for the occupants. Not because the plants use up carbon dioxide and give off oxy gen, which, my dollar-a-year bot any man tells me they do, but because they give from their leaves moisture and from the porous pots considerable more moisture evaporates into the .air of the room or house, the air which is generally excessively dried out by heating, no matter what type of heating is used. Then came a kind of challenge from a biology class in a school (a junior high school, I believe) citing two or three textbooks au thors who state that plants un der the influence of sunlight use up carbon dioxide and give off oxygen, but at night plants do use up some oxygen and give off some carbon dioxide. Now the biology class wonders how I'm going t talk my way out of the predicament. Far be it frojai me to contra dict an authority who states that plants do use some oxygen and excrete some carbon dioxide day andor night. I merely say that the amount of oxygen or carbon dioxide in volved is insignificant, much less than a tiny animal uses or- gives off in any case. So the question of the healthfulness of the air of a room where plants grow comes back to the value of the water vapor they add ta-the air. Indeed, the proportion of oxy gen or carbon dioxide in the air of a bedroom or other closed space rarely if ever accounts for the purity or impurity of the air. What makes the air "pure" and "fresh" is principally mo tion draft, breeze or less per ceptible movement of the air by fan or exhaust. "Bad" or "im pure" air is just too warm and too still or stagnant. In nineteenth - century hospit als the- attendants often take flowers out of the patient's room at night, less . well, they "are Civil Service Engineer Exam Scheduled Now Civil service examinations for the position of- engineer at the McClellan Air Force Base, Calif, will be held until further notice, according to C. This is dangerous, so far as the happi ness of the whole family is con cerned, and it should be a warn ing to you not to take any action until you are sure that he is 100 per cent in favor of the adoption.
