Boston-Born Matador Rates Spanish Critics7 Remarks Madrid UR) With a little bit of luck and more persever ance Porter Tuck, Boston's 23-year-old blond, may be the young man destined) to equal or even urpass Brooklyn's Sidney Tranklin, th Bostonian's one time teacher, in the art of bull fighting. o This, at least. Is the consensus of Madrid's leading bullfighting critics, even though the critics refrained from mentioning Franklin. Critics, usually harsh on any foreigner who ventures into the strict confines of the bullfighting profession, were unanimous in their praise for the Boston lad after his first appearance in Ma drid's Vista Alegre bullring on May 22. Tuck received two gorings. He was badly shaken. This impress ed the critics. Good Spaniards that they are, they felt no for eigner can quite come up to Spanish valor, but in the case of Tuck they remarked that per 'haps he had too much. Critic Rubiera, writing in Ar tfjba, devoted more than half a column to Tuck's May 22 pre sentation and entitled it "The valor of the Boston Elond." ,"The merit of this young man resides in the fact that, knowing he was seriously gored, he insist ed on bullfighting he gives us the impression that he may pos sibly continue successfully to re main in the bullring," Rubiera wrote. Critic Lucas Herrero, writing In Ya, said: "The Gne from Boston demon strated fully that he has more than the needed valor and de cision for .this dangerous profes sion . . . He has rudimentary knowledge, he has a repertorie, lie has 'aficion' (desire), he has the will, and he has the valor. With luck, constancy, and more perfection he may get some where." Cric Rafael de Vega wrote in the evening paper, Madrid: There was curiosity to see Porter Tuck, the Boston Blond, a young man who revealed un common valor and possesses pro per theory even though it is not yet well developed. But these are logical defects of a beginner. If he continues with the same valor, it is possible that in the future, his work, which at pres ent is on the rough and unpolish ed side, will become cleaner and more aesthetic. For the time be ing he has earned himself the estimation of the public." Tuck said he was born in Bos ton's Beacon Hill section, but his parents presently resided in Hartsdale, Mass. Tuck's other profession is painter, an abstract painter. He first came to Spain in 1953 and met matador Sidney Frank lin in Sevila. Franklin at that time directing a bullfighting academy in Alcala de Guadaira, enrolled Tuck and taught him the fundamentals. Since then Tuck has fought three-year-old bulls in Casablanca, Jerez, La Linea and other provincial towns and capitals. Everything was going well for him here on May 22 when a guest of wind lifted his cape and left him in the open. It was then that the bull charged. Recovering from his two horn wounds in Madrid's bullfighters' sanatorium, Tuck is already thinking of his next corrida, a second appearance in Vista Alegre bullring. SKUNK STROLL New Salem, N.D. The work has been going on for seven years. When it is com pleted in about another year astronomers will study it for an swers to such questions as: Is the universe of uniform structure? Did it have a definite beginning in space and time? Does it have an end, or does it extend outward endlessly? Could the sun itself ever blaze out as a nova, instantly burning to cin ders the earth and other planets of the solar system? A nova is a star which suddenly Increases its light and energy output tremendously. 1758 Phoiomaps The entire atlas will consist of 1758 phofomaps. It will reveal millions of new stars, galaxies and systems of galaxies far out in space. Dr. Lee Dubridge, president, of the California Institute of Tech- will be " an astronomical Bible for 100 years." For those who want a copy in their library, the price is $2000. So far, Palomar observatory has photographed about three quarters of the sky to an unpre cedented depth in space of 600, 000,000 light years. Nine light years is six trillion miles. Many Never Before Seen The photomaps were made by Palomar's 48-inch big Schmidt telescope. Many of the space reg ions photographed have never been seen before by astronomers. The sky survey has shown up thousands of galaxies similar to the Milky Way. Before the sur vey, only about three dozen such galaxies were known. BALANCE DUE Ogden, Kan. It is entitled "King-Size Kodiak." The article is illustrated with three pictures taken by Day dur ing the trip to Kodiak island. Requires Skill, Patience The Medford man has hunted in Alaska on numerous occa sions, and in addition to shoot ing several Alaskan Brown bear, has taken hundreds of colored pictures and much film. Day re ports that to photograph wild animals successfully requires even more skill and patience than shooting them, and he finds the camera work more reward ing than the hunting. His photography equipment now includes an Arriflex, battery-driven German made movie camera rarely found in this country. Trophy for Museum On a recent trip into Alaska Day killed an Alaskan Brown bear which was presented to George Barbey, ex-president of Switzerland, for a museum of natural history in Geneva. The Swiss.who is spending six months in Alaska collecting material for the museum, happened to be in the same region on the Alaskan peninsula where Day was hunt ing, and a chance meeting be tween the two men resulted in the gift for the museum.
