(U.R) About 12, 500 members of the CIO United Auto Workers went on strike against eight John Deere & Co. plants in Iowa and Illinois to day, but union and company ne gotiators still tried to reach an agreement. The strike went into effect at midnight as marathon negotia tion sessions continued. The company and union offic ials met off and on from 1 p.m. yesterday until 4 a.m. today. At that time a recess was declared so the negotiators could get some sleep. But the were due to meet again at 1 p.m. The union is seeking a guaran teed annual wage plan and is fighting a company proposal to convert its Des Moines and Du buque plants from piece rate to uniform hourly wage rates.
